Not too long ago Pradziad Database started to include some Diocese Archive resources. But it seems there are sill a lot of collections of records kept in Diocese Archives (AD) which are not included in the Pradziad Database.

Church records for centuries, until the beginning of 20th century, were treated as official civil registry records and priests acted as State Administrators. There were no separate civil vital records in 19th century and earlier.
To put it simple, vital Roman-Catholic records in Poland can be found in three types of institutions:

1. Locally in parishes or villages which used to belong to bigger parishes.
2. Diocese (Catholic Church) Archives.
3. State Archives (PRADZIAD Database: http://baza.archiwa.gov.pl/sezam/pradziad.php ).

Good source of information about where records from given parish are kept now is our Polish Genealogical Society tool here: http://parafie.genealodzy.pl/ . Mormons have often cooperated with the Catholic church in Poland that's why lots of records kept in Diocese Archives is microfilmed by them.

As you can check, records from Braniewo are stored now in Archdiocese Archives in Olsztyn: http://parafie.genealodzy.pl/index.php?op=pr&pid=587 and the records from Frombork, even starting from 1631, are kept in the same Olsztyn Archdiocese Archives: http://parafie.genealodzy.pl/index.php?op=pr&pid=1822 .

Hi, Zenon

I had found the information about Olsztyn in genealodzy.pl. I have checked Pradziad many times before and they usually display which records are kept in the AP archives and which ones are kept in the AD archives. What has surprised me is that there is no mention at all for Braniewo and Frombork, which could not be considered - by the polish pattern - small villages.

Also, AD Olsztyn holds the church records, only. So, where are the civil records for Braniewo and Frombork?

Hi, all

I was trying to find which AP holds the records for Braniewo and Frombork and PRADZIAD showed no results for these places. However, when checking LDS database I have found that both places were filmed. I don't think the books were destroyed because LDS started footage after WWII, to the best of my knowledge. Therefore, it is a mistery to me why they not appear in Pradziad database.
