I'm trying to figure out if this passenger manifest could be my great-grandfather. The date of the manifest is close to the date indicated on the naturalization record, which refers to Rypin -- https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/3:1:3QS7-89Q4-436Z?from=lynx1UIV8&treeref=KG3Q-3HW&i=966
Thanks!

Hi David,
On the ship manifest, I read it as "Strzyk" so looking at a map near Rypin, I am drawn to "Strzygi." What do you think?
Sophia

Very possible. It looks like a "K" at the end, but this could be it. Thanks!

However, I've not been able to figure out the name of the last place of foreign residence he wrote down. I've tried guessing (it looks like Malamnuko or something similar to me but when I put that into google I get nothing haha) but I've not been able to figure it out yet. If anyone recognises it please let me know!
Thanks,
Bridget

Hi Bridget, Sophia & Marcel,

I agree with Sophia & Marcel that the place is Malanówko and that it extremely likely that the record Marcel located is for your ancestor, although the birth date is not in agreement with the date on the Declaration of Intention. Geneteka lists siblings of Franciszek with links to the scans at https://geneteka.genealodzy.pl/index.php?op=gt&lang=pol&bdm=B&w=07mz&rid=B&search_lastname=kopaczewski%20&search_name=tomasz&search_lastname2=&search_name2=walentyna&from_date=&to_date=&rpp1=&ordertable Malanówko was where all his siblings were born. The marriage of his parents and the birth record of his father are also indexed but without scans. The records are available at Family Search, but must be viewed at a Family History Center or affiliated public library.

To lock down confirmation that he is the correct person it would probably be helpful to contact the parish where he married and resided in Michigan. The Polish parish in the Lincoln Twp. was St. Florian in Standish. The parish has been consolidated with another and is now known as Resurrection of the Lord. Here is the link http://www.arenaccatholic.com/contact-us.html The marriage record should be able to confirm the names of his parents.

Wishing you continued successful research,

Dave

Hi Dave,

Thank you again for all your advice. I'll definitely have another go at using Family Search and have a look at what else might be indexed. Interestingly the birth date isn't the only thing that doesn't seem correct on the Declaration of Intention, there were 2 or 3 other bits of info that seemed a little off as well, so I'm just using it as a rough guide for information at the moment ????

Thanks again,
Hi Bridget,
It is probably Malanówko.
You can find it on google maps.
Best of luck in your research,
Sophia

I think you are right.
Malanówko belonged to the parish of Ligowo. There is a birth record of Franciszek Kopaczewski in this parish, in the year of 1868, birth place: Malanówko, parents: Tomasz Kopaczewski and Walentyna Słabowska.
Record numeber 138:

https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/3:1:3Q9M-CSVC-ZL3G?cat=223710

Hi,

Thank you both for your deciphering! I've been trying different spellings for weeks now with no luck! I'll have a look at that record as well

Thanks,

Can you read this name? I attach 2 files: 1 with just the image of this town name , and the other with all the City names on the manifest.

Hi,
If you go to google maps you can look at both Dźwiniacz Górny and Dźwiniacz Dolny which are, oddly, about 30 miles apart. I say oddly because there are many villages that occur in pairs, one being Górny and the other Dolny, and such pairs are usually quite close together. It is like saying Upper Dźwiniacz and Lower Dźwiniacz. Anyway, both of these villages are in southeastern Poland, very close to the border with today's Ukraine, although in the timeframe in which your grandfather was born they would have been in Galicia (the Austrian partition of Poland).
Best of luck in your research,
Actually, now I have my doubts.

I wonder if it might be Liudvinavas - which is much closer to Marijampole.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Liudvinavas

This would make sense, as I see a reference to a Ludwinowo in the Kalwarja district near Marijampole that was a village where Jews lived.
https://suwalkigermans.wordpress.com/2016/03/16/2016-landsmen-post-3/

If true, could be bad news for my search (the linked post says there were no Jewish vital records saved from that district).

Anyone have any guesses as to what town this might have been? This appears on a US death certificate in 1933 as the birthplace of the deceased (a Jewish immigrant born in 1883). Her husband, also an immigrant, probably provided the American clerk with the name phonetically. The only thing close I get from Google searching is a town in Czechia but that doesn't make sense.

All US family records (census, and vital records) say the family was from Russia or Poland. We always believed they were from Marijampole, Lithuania (or near there).
Thanks for adding this. If that is the Torun that Bob wants, then the reason he does not see it on these maps is that they are only for the old Russian Partition. The Torun near Bydgoszcz was just outside of that.
Best regards,

Thanks Gilberto and Sophia.
I was a bit too quick looking it over.. Yes, with my German side of the family, I did a quick check for the Torun near Bydgoszcz, I wasn't even aware that there are others!
I had traced my German ancestors backwards from the Lipno area to many small villages along the way back to Torun.

The major maps I'd been working with - came from http://igrek.amzp.pl/mapindex.php. those are down to the trees, shrubs and rain puddles for detail.
Another I found shows Torun in the Prussion partiton of 1772, Lipno was added in 1793 to the Prussian partition. I'll take another look at that first site to see what they *are* describing ..

Added later:
On the Map58, it shows "Krolestwo Pruskie" where I expected to find the Torun I was looking for .. That translates to "Kingdom of Prussia" ! So being called a 1907 map threw me off. I know that Russia administered the Lipno/Plock area as being in their Partition. Other maps showed Torun in the Prussian Partition.. I know it was also called South Prussia for a time. I guess I'm heading back for more research..

Stepping back from that URL, we find that this is a map of the Kingdom of Poland.. Thus, Torun is in Prussia in 1907. Grandpa was born near Lipno in the Russian partition in 1881.

                                      Hi Gilberto,
Thanks for adding this. If that is the Torun that Bob wants, then the reason he does not see it on these maps is that they are only for the old Russian Partition. The Torun near Bydgoszcz was just outside of that.
Best regards,
Thanks for the link! Great resource.
You mentioned that you cannot find Torun on their map. I do see it. They link you to http://ipgs.us/mapinfo/atlas1907/maps/map10.jpg and you look at the grid for Column 1, Row C and there it is. Or is there a second Torun that you are looking for?
Sophia

Hi, Sophia

This Torun (currently a set of three places with that name) is near Nasielski. I think Bob referers to the Torun near Bydgoszcz, in kujawsko-pomorskie.
