I just saw that the Tylmanowa parish records have been microfilmed (Catholic parish register transcripts of baptisms, marriages and deaths for Tylmanowa, Galizien, Austria; now Tylmanowa (Nowy Targ), Kraków, Poland), including a few records from Ochotnica:

First of all thanks for your help. I have found my grandfathers naturalization, declaration of intention, and marriage license. In all documents his first name is Matt Martin and when he signs his last name it is spelled Barnash. One time I have seen him sign it Barnas'. When the document preparer spells his name it is Barnish, or Barnas. My grandfather was born on Feb. 15,1886. He came to america from Bremen, Germany on October 6,1903 on board the Kaiser wilhelm der Grosse and arrived in New York on Oct 18,1903. I could find no record of him on the ellis island site. He is single when he arrives in Portage, Pa. My grandmother, Katarzyna Piszczek, was 16yrs old and single when she arrived in New York aboard the ship Main on July 27,1905 from Bremen. Katarzyna was born on Nov. 19,1889 in Nowy Targ, Poland. Her last place of residence was Tylmanova. Matt and Katy were married on Nov. 6,1906 in Pennsylvannia and lived in Sonman,Pa. .Matt was a coal miner and Katy was a housekeeper. Matt and Katy had five children in Pa.: Blanche, Nell, Joe, Jacob and Edna. Edna died before one year old. I would love to find information about their lives and families in Poland, and if any relatives still live there. Matt lists his parents names as Joe and Rosey Barnas. Katy lists her parents names on the marriage license as John and Annie Piszczek. The Polish writing on her tombstone reads: TU SPOCZYWA S.P. kATARZYNA BARNAS UR 19 LIST. 1889 UM 19 CZERWCA 1930 PROSIO ZDROWAS MARA I TROJE DZIECI . On Matt's tombstone it reads: MACIEJ M. BARNAS 1886-1946. I would be truly thankful for any help....Mike Barnish

First of all thanks to Shellie for helping me find direction. I am searching for information about my grandfathers family. His name was Maciej (Matthew Martin) Barnash. The spelling of his surname changed when he arrived in America. He states in his records that he came from Nowy Targ. I would be interested to find out any information about his life in Nowy Targ. He came to America between 1900-1905 through Baltimore, Maryland and settled in the Cambria County area of Pennsylvannia, the towns of jamestown, sonman, and Puritan. My grandfather married and he and his wife ( Katarzyna Piszezcek) Raised four or five children. My grandfather worked as a coal miner and a WPA parks project worker at different times of his life. I would like to know if there were any relations living in Nowy Targ,( brothers, sisters, parents) which church he might have attended. Right now I know some things about his american life life but nothing about his life from Poland. Thank you in advance Mike

Mike,
Below are just some Barnas emigrants from the district of Nowy Targ who entered the United States through Ellis Island. They were all headed to PA and came from the villages Banska (now Szaflary-Banska), Ochotnica, and Gliczarow. All these villages are in the district of Nowy Targ and only a few miles apart from each other. You said your ancestor came through Baltimore, MD but if he was from the district of Nowy Targ, the probability is high that he was from one of these villages and that there is a connection between the families.

He was headed to PA to join his cousin Wojciech Mientus at Mientus, PA (I think MIentus, PA is a writing error, but that’s what the passenger record says).

Jan Barnas
He was headed to Condersfort, PA to join his brother-in-law Jozef Walasik. He was in the US before in 1902/1905, also in Condersfort, PA.

Marcin Barnas
Residence: Ochotnica Immigration: 01 Mar 1910 Given Name: Marcin Surname: Barnas Last Place of Residence: Ochotnica Date of Arrival: 01 Mar 1910 Age at Arrival: 35 Ethnicity: Austria Port of Departure: Bremen Port of Arrival: New York Gender: Male Marital Status: M US Citizen: Ship of Travel: Rhein.
His passenger record is linked to the wrong page and I couldn’t see where he was headed to. There’s a way to find these ship manifests, but it takes some time.

And here is a Katarzyna Piszczek from Tylmanowa:
Katarzyna Piszczek Last Place of Residence: Tylmanowa, Date of Arrival: 27 Jul 1905 Age at Arrival: 16y Ethnicity: Austrian Polish Port of Departure: Bremen Port of Arrival: New York Gender: Female Marital Status: S US Citizen: - Ship of Travel: Main Source: New York Passenger Arrival Lists (Ellis Island), 1892-1924. She was headed to Point [?], PA to join her cousin Kata [can't make out name and exact place].

Tylmanowa is very close to Ochotinica, the village the above Jozef, Jan, and Marcin Barnas came from. You'll find some information on Tylmanowa here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tylmanowa

I saw some marriages between members of the Barnas and the Piszczek families, but not the one you are looking for.

However, there are some interesting Tylmanowa records online at https://www.familysearch.org/search/records/index#count=20&query=%2Bgivenname%3AKatarzyna~%20%2Bsurname%3APiszczek~%20%2Bspouse_givenname%3AMaciej~
that you should check out. If you scroll down to where it says "baptism: Tylmanowa", you'll find, for example:

Name: Catharina Piszczek
Event: Baptism
Event Date: 27 Nov 1898
Event Place: Tylmanowa, Tylmanowa, Krakow, Poland
House Number: 117
Gender: Female
Father: Josephus Piszczek
Mother: Catharina Barnas
Volume Beginning Year: 1895
Volume Ending Year: 1901
Page Number: 333
Entry Number: 63
Film Number: 1896706
Digital Folder Number: 004645556
Image Number: 00022

If you know (or can find out) when your grandmother Katarzyna Piszczek was born, you may have hit the jackpot and will get her parents' names, the house number, and so on. I don't want to get too hung up on Tylmanowa now, but we could be on the right track. Just have a look at all the information and let us know what you think.
Hi Mike, Do you know the original spelling of the surname? I thought it might be Barnaś, as I believe the mark above the s would make the s sound like an sh. Without the mark, I found Barnas on a map of Poland http://www.moikrewni.pl/mapa/kompletny/barnas.html Seems like a rare surname, but it does show up in the Nowy Targ area. When my sister had genealogy homework years ago, she had written that my grandmother told her she was from Novy Tark (roughly how one would say Nowy Targ). When I went searching, I was excited to find Nowy Targ on a map, but it didn't seem like the small village that my grandmother described. Yes, Shellie and others put the pieces together for me, and found my grandmother was from Zaluczne. On Rafal's surname list: http://www.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~polwgw/rafal/surname.html I see one person with the Barnas surname also with a Bernas spelling. This family was not from around Nowy Targ though. Shellie asked some good questions that might help to help you.
Thank you for posting this I have a copy of my great grandmother sisters passport application. It said where my great great grandfather live in the US for 20 years (1893-1913) in a town that I could not make out because some one wrote over it the first part of it. The town in Pennsylvania is Sonman. My family comes from Nowy Targ and Waksmund.
Hi Mike,
I'm glad to see your posting here! Nowy Targ is a large town and many times people said they were from Nowy Targ when they were actually from a smaller, nearby village. My friend Cheri can tell you about this - her grandmother came from Nowy Targ and we later figured out that she was from Zaluczne. So one of the first things you'll want to know your grandfather's actual birthplace if it is not Nowy Targ. Can you tell us what records you refer to when you said that "he states in his records that he came from Nowy Targ."

You gave a range of years (1900-1905) for your grandfather's arrival. Is this because you have not yet found his arrival record, but you know he arrived in Baltimore?

Did your grandfather marry Katarzyna Piszezcek in Poland or in America? Was she from the same town/village as your grandfather Maciej? Were any of their children born in Poland?

Thanks for sharing your information with us. Every time someone posts their info here, we increase the chances that someone will make an important connection and get closer to finding their family!

My name is Mike.
