Sophia, thank you for pointing this out. I will continue to search for Martin's records, especially now that I know the family was in Inowroclaw around 1884 and Martin would have been a teenager living with his parents if his birth year was truly 1871. His father, Andreas, died in 1889 making him only 18 years old when his father passed away. And Martin would have been 35 years old when his mom came to the US in 1906. My best lead would be his records in Inowroclaw. The search continues. Thank you. Marsha

At least that small mystery for me is solved. My notes on the town are now corrected. You know, I came across this record, list of souls, which has me question if this could be Martin? I am first learning to read or translate these records, so I might now be very good, but I do see under Martin's line what I think is mentioning a trip to the US. His birth year does not match the 1871, but the towns are in the area my ancestors are from. Maybe there is something in this record you might see that I don't that could help me determine if it my relative? Maybe I am just grasping for straws. (Or reading into the record as my relative when he might be.) Thank you for any feedback. .....Marsha

Hi Marsha,
You have the right approach, continuing to look for traces of your Martin in other records. In this case, what I see on the record you posted puts me in agreement with Barb, that this is not your Martin.
I would point out the column after the column with the names, "Stand oder Gewerbe." It is showing the relationship of the person on each line to the head of household. Here, the head of household is Jakob Lewandowski, the next line is Michalina, his "ehefrau" (wife). In the next two lines, Adalbert and Joseph, we see that the person doing the writing uses 2 different forms of the letter "s" (both are correct forms), and the word is "sohn" meaning son, although for these two sons the notation is "sohn ad. 2" which I am not familiar with. From their birth info, they appear to be twins, so maybe that is what the notation shows. Otherwise, I wonder if it is a reference to them being born from a prior marriage? If anyone knows for sure, I'd be interested. Now, the Martin Lewandowski on the following line is also listed as "sohn." Thus, his parents are Jakob and Michalina. I do think this rules him out.
You are correct that there is a note of his emigration, on the 6th of November 1890. He seems to be seven months after the emigration of his parents. It says "nach Amerika."
Keep searching,
Hi,
No, this is not the Martin we are looking for. Look at birth years of the other children of Andreas and Lucia. Catharina was also born in 1874 (April, 29).
Thank you so very very much. For the longest time I was searching for the town that I had written in my notes as "Junirladist". I looked every where to see what it could be but have not found anything, so it was just left in my notes. Now I know it is the city of Inowroclaw. How exciting. I learn so much from everyone and I appreciate it very much. ---Marsha

Hmmm. I am wondering if I have this right. Perhaps it is Latin for something? When I search google for other occurrences of Junivladisl it is not leading me to Inowroclaw.
Apologies for the uncertainty.
Sophia

That's right, Sophia.
Inowrocław - Polish
Hohensalza - German
Junivladislavia / Inovladislavia- Latin

Thanks, Barb!
So Marsha, just amend what I wrote, to get the full name. I was writing Junivladisl (which is what I saw in the church book, I guess they ran out of room in the column) but write it in your records as Barb shows it here, the full name is Junivladislavia.
Hi Marsha
These are found in St. Nicolai Church in Inowroclaw. I don't have access to it. But these may be in the State's register (if Martin's wife comes from that place). Then act numbers will not agree with the church.
Best to check both in Inowroclaw town (miasto) and Inowroclaw village (wies).
Perhaps I could search for a marriage record of Martin first? Then it might tell me more in order to find a birth or death record. It doesn't appear for now that he immigrated to the US since what ever records I found were not the correct Martin Lewandowski, son of Andreas and Lucia Lewandowski. (I did find that Lucia's brother, Stephen Lewandowski (born 1852) did come to Milwaukee and remarried.) Hi Marsha,
I checked for possible weddings for Martin in the period 1889-1933.
He turned 18 in 1889. I found 4 that could fit:
1889 - act 54
1892 - act 36
1895 - act 3
1898 - act 99
Unfortunately, these are based on an index, and I can't see more.
Hi Everyone,
If you are following the movement of the Lewandowski family, you recall that the image of the registry book that Marsha posted has them moving in to the town of Latkowo in January 1882 and moving out in January 1884. It looks like the place to which they moved is written as Inowroclaw.
Trish provided a link for Franciszek Lewandowski's birth in June 1884. He would be the first of their children born in that place. If you look at the column that provides his place of birth, you may be thinking that it does not look at all like "Inowroclaw" and yet it is. What is written there is actually "Junivladisl" and that means the same thing. You can see that here, at the beginning of the book in which Franciszek's birth record appears:
https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/3:1:3Q9M-CSX8-YPTG?i=5&cc=4116415
which has the Latin, "Ecclesiae parochialis Junivladislaviensis" and the later addition, "Inowroclaw." You also see written there "Hohensalza" which is the German form of the town name.
Best regards,
Thank you for writing. I have attached the Polish census record of the family and #4 lists Martin Lewandowski and the town of Balin where he was born. Other than that I do not know and cannot find anything on him. I was hoping he immigrated to the US around the same time his mother did in 1906, but cannot find anything. Thank you for your help once again.

Hi Marsha,
Nice to hear from you.
Have you found the birth records for Martin's other siblings?
3 villages are mentioned in this census record. All are located a short distance from each other. Mulingen that all three births were registered in the same parish. I think so. Based on location I would think it is Inwroclaw. Unfortunately I didn't find anything there. Inowrclaw is a big town and I didn't check out all the parishes. Last night I sent an email to the State Archives Bydgoszcz department Inowroclaw with questions about localization. I will contact you as soon as I receive a reply from the archive. I guess it will take up to a week.
Also thinking about emigrating to the USA. You mentioned that Lucia came to the US in 1906 with two daughters. If Martin did not come with his mother and sisters, then I would check an earlier journey for him around 1902-1905.

Have a nice weekend,
-Barb

Hello Marsha,

I received a reply from the Registry office in Bydgoszcz, branch of Inowroclaw. According to them, Balin belongs to the parish of St. Nikolai Inowroclaw and Registry office Inowroclaw - village (Polish Inowroclaw wies). Remember that the Registry offices in Poland started in the autumn of 1874, so Martin's birth record can only be found in the church.
I did not find Martin in Inowroclaw in 1871. Maybe 1872 needs to be checked as well in case he was born at the end of the year and was baptized the following year.

https://www.genealogiawarchiwach.pl/#query.query=lewandowski&query.type=ALL&query.city=Balin&query.page=4&query.suggestion=false&query.thumbnails=false&query.facet=false&query.asc=false&query.sortMode=PUBLICATION&personTree=false&goComments=false&searcher=big&externalmodal=359749933

Thanks, Marsha, that helped.
Your second link, which you labelled "List of Children of Andreas and Lucia" is part of the index of the book. Your first link, which you labelled "List of Souls," is a page from that book. The book is the "Lista Dusz" for the town of Latkowo. (You can see this, if you look at the first page of the book. Also it is acknowledged in the notes on the right side of the page: "Unit full name Lista dusz - Latkowo.")
If you look at that page, you will see in the upper-right corner that its original handwritten page number was 17, hence the 17 in the index. At some point in its history, it must have been added to another stack of pages and the 17 was crossed out and it became page 33, and the same thing happened again and it became page 36.
I hope this helps.
I think it may have an important clue as to where the family lived, but I am not sure what the document was used for. Can you tell me anything more about this and what the number 17 must mean associated with each family member? Thank you. ---Marsha

Hi Marsha,
You see the column heading says "str" which means "strona," which is Polish for page.
So they will be on page 17.
Again, if you provided a link to the image, instead of only the image, it would allow me to look at the whole document and see what the thing actually is.
