Hi Tom,
Thank you for sharing the picture. I love old pictures especially wedding pictures. Plus, it is always nice to put a face to a name.

Please keep us posted if you get any records from the New Jersey State Archives. The death record for Jozef could list his parents names. Plus the marriage record also could list his parents names along with some clues as to where Jozef is from.

Did you try to get the baptismal records for the children from the Church they attended? Or the Church marriage record? Those records could also have clues on them. Make sure it ask for any notations on the records such as: town of origin, parents' names, etc.

I'm still having no luck with finding a manifest for Jozef or Marianna.

Have a wonderful day!
Regards,
I wanted to post the manifest for Justyn Smolewski. It has some clues on it. Justyn was listed as Ustin Imolewski. He left his father Anton in Gieranony, and going to see his brother in Bayonne. He is on line #9.

Question: Does the brother's name look like Jan Smolewski? I need another opinion especially since the transcriber on ancestry.com transcribed Smolewski wrong.

Hi Trish,
Well done finding Justyn Smolewski's manifest!
I agree, the brother's name is JAN SMOLEWSKI. Please note that Jan must have moved, because the manifest shows Justus's intention of going to Jan in Bayonne but that was changed to Jersey City. You see it in two places. On the first page of the manifest you see he had ditto marks in the destination column, meaning he was going to Bayonne just like the person on the line above him, but "JC" is overwritten there. Also on the second page where the full address in Bayonne is crossed out and it looks like 170 1st Street JC (Jersey City) is written in.
Best regards,

Tom, about the manifests, I did list that they were a "possible" manifest. I had liked the manifests for they were going to Newark, New Jersey which is right across from Bayonne, New Jersey. Sorry they weren't your family.

Thank you for sharing the family information and records. It is a big help with trying to locate information.

Sorry if you I am duplicating your work, I wanted to post the manifest for Justyn Smolewski. It has some clues on it. Justyn was listed as Ustin Imolewski. He left his father Anton in Gieranony, and going to see his brother in Bayonne. He is on line #9.
There are also several trees on ancestry.com that list that list the children of Anton Smolewski as: Justryn, Marianna (Mary), Forn(?), Ana, Zygmunt, and Stanislawa. I'm not sure if this is correct or not. Like I said it from someone's tree on ancestry.com.

Question for Tom: Do you have the obituaries for Jozef Gurski and Marianna Smolewski? If not, I can post them for you.
I did find this document online for Marianna Smolewski Gurski. I am not sure if you have it.

We didn't know about other Smolewski siblings. We only knew of Marjanna (Mary) and Justyn (Justin, aka Ustyn). I have Mary's Naturalization record which you posted. I do not have Marjanna's or Justyn's obits. If you could post them that would be great.

By the way, Marjanna was my wife's maternal grandmother.

Thanks,
Hi Everyone,

Question: Does the brother's name look like Jan Smolewski? I need another opinion especially since the transcriber on ancestry.com transcribed Smolewski wrong.

Name	Ustin Imolewski
Gender	Male
Ethnicity/ Nationality	Polish
Marital Status	Single
Age	18
Birth Date	abt 1891
Birth Place	Russia
Other Birth Place	Geranowy
Last Known Residence	Geranony, Russia
Departure Port	Hamburg
Arrival Date	9 Apr 1909
Arrival Port	New York, New York, USA
Residence Place	Russia
Final Destination	Bayonne, New York
Height	5 Feet, 7 Inches
Hair Color	Fair
Eye Color	Blue
Complexion	Fair
Money in Possession	19
Person in Old Country	Anton Imolewski
Person in Old Country Relationship	Father
Person in Old Country Residence	Geranony
Person in US	Jen Gurolawski (Jan Smolewski)
Person in US Relationship	Brother
Father	Anton Imolewski
Sibling	Jen Gurolawski
Ship Name	Rhaetia

There are also several trees on ancestry.com that list that list the children of Anton Smolewski as: Justryn, Marianna (Mary), Forn(?), Ana, Zygmunt, and Stanislawa. I'm not sure if this is correct or not. Like I said it from someone's tree on ancestry.com.

Question for Tom: Do you have the obituaries for Jozef Gurski and Marianna Smolewski? If not, I can post them for you.

I did find this document online for Marianna Smolewski Gurski. I am not sure if you have it.

Still looking for Jozef and Manianna's manifest.
Regards,
Josef Gurski d. 4 Jan 1934
Marjanna (Smolewska) Gurski d. 20 Jan 1981

Their children: Josephine N, Francis E, Walter J, Janina (Janice) T, Casimir J and Edward P

If it's helpful, Marjanna had a brother, Justyn Smolewski (b. 16 Dec 1891 - d. 5 Jan 1930). He immigrated to America in March 1909 and served in the US Army during WWI. On his WWI draft card, he listed his place of birth as "Oszmana Poland Russia".

Could Oszmana be present day Ashmyany, Belarus? It's only 20 miles or so from Gieranony, where the parish was located.

Hi
Correct. Oszmiana is today called Ashmyany, and is located in Belarus. 40 km is a long distance. In addition, Oszmiana belongs to the R-C parish in Daukszyszki.
Did you notice that Marjanna Smolewska's father is listed as Antoni Smolewski on her baptismal certificate? That would mean that the immigration record which you found for a Marianna Smolewski is incorrect as her father's name is listed as Josef Smolewski.
Hi,
Back to your first post. I found the village of Guciszki belonging to the RC parish Gieranony, but no Norwelu nearby. This means that Jozef and Marianna lived near each other.

I found a possible manifest for Jozef Gorski (Gurski). He is also going to Newark, New Jersey. He is on line 29. I need another set of eyes to look over the manifest for the transcriber on ancestry.com made a few mistakes.

I also suggest to order the death record for Jozef Gorski from the New Jersey State Archives. The death record could list the parents names. Here is the form to order a death record.
Tom maybe you / your wife have that document?

We only know that Joseph Gurski married Mary Smolweski in New Jersey, in 1916 (see attachement). We do not know the day or month.

Hi Tom, Barbara, and Sophia,

Tom, if the family settled in New Jersey, you can obtain Jozef and Mary's marriage record from the New Jersey State Archives.

Here is the main page for the New Jersey State Archives.
https://www.nj.gov/state/archives/index.html

Here is the form to use in order to obtain the marriage record for Jozef and Mary.
https://wwwnet-dos.state.nj.us/DOS_ArchivesDBPortal/index.aspx

Question:
Is this the correct family? Jozef married Maria (Marianna). They had Josephine, Frank, Walter, Jennie, Charles (aka: Kazimierz), and Edward.

If this is the correct family, I know that Jozef Gurski died January 1, 1934 in Bayonne, New Jersey.

Regards,
Hi Tom and Barb,
Tom, are you certain you have the correct ship manifest? You posted only the first page of a two-page manifest, so here is the second page:
https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/3:1:33S7-9P1Z-1C?view=index&action=view
I ask because this Jozef Gurski is headed to Chicago. On the second page, his answer to "place of birth" is in the last column and it does not look like either "Norweln" or "Gescziszki." The question asked on the first page was his "last permanent residence" and that is where he answered Norweln.
There are many men with the same name also arriving in 1913, if you look at Ellis Island entries (the one you posted is for the port of Philadelphia). Maybe you already looked at all of them, and found reasons for why they were not the right fit?
Trish had recently posted some valuable info on getting vital records from New Jersey. That would be really helpful here.
