Thank you so much for finding these and sharing them with me! I apologize for responding so late to your post! I suddenly got very busy and have not had much time to work on ancestry projects and am just getting back to it.
I hope you're having a nice day and thanks again!
I was looking at Eva & Simon's marriage record. Witnesses were Moises Diksa and Marianna Dubickiene (?).
Hi everyone!

Just wanted to share a quick update; I have checked some records from Panevėžys. They were:
-https://www.epaveldas.lt/preview?id=1674%2F1%2F20 1890-1895 looked through 90-91
-https://www.epaveldas.lt/preview?id=1674%2F1%2F18 1886-1890
Both were titled Panevėžio RKB gimimo metrikų knyga (yra Velykiai) and from the same and the only one with online records near the area.

I saw some similar last names, but nothing that seemed to match. Now I will try to check Pramezys.

Hope everyone is having a good day!
It's a place Simon Krutulis came from. Randomness?
-Barb

Hi Barb

Hmm, maybe it's worth checking out. I think that the nearest parish is Balbieriškis? I don't know much about this area to be honest...
Edit: I think that it belongs to the parish Udrija https://vilkaviskiovyskupija.lt/dekanatai-ir-parapijos/alytaus-dekanatas/udrijos-svc-jezaus-sirdies-parapija/

I will try to find other parishes close to Nupronys, too.

Hi everyone!
Thank you all so much for your continued help with this, I really appreciate your time and expertise! I don't think I would have ever though of Panevėžys or Pramezys. I will look too and see if I can find anything promising there.

That would feel very random if she happened to be from a place so close to Simon! If I remember correctly, there weren't birth records available on ePaveldas for the possible years of Eva's birth, but I will double check to see what is.

I really like the manifest that you found Monika and was disappointed I couldn't find much around Nupronys. It seems like such a good fit!

Hope everyone is having a good day!

I checked stevemorse.org for passenger lists containing a town name similar to "Promessy". I found several more or less similar: Promys, Premes, Pramesy and a little bit different Premesisky - all those people were going to Scranton, PA or another town in Luzerne. These may be completely different cities, but maybe they traveled from one town to the same area in the USA?

Eva Marcinkewicz, https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:JFYV-TZN
Anton Marzinkewitz, https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:JJBC-K38
Joses Ananka, https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:JFD9-SMS
Magdalena Jessewitzky, https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:JFWC-6PF
Josas Meskewitz, https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:JJBC-K38

According to this family tree https://www.familysearch.org/tree/person/details/G813-CDB and Josef Ananka's naturalization papers, his wife was born in Pramezys, Kaunas and I think this is a town that was written in his passenger list as Premes.

Do you think that Promessy (and Promys, Premes, Pramesy) could be Pramezys, Kaunas?

Have a nice day!

So glad you're back, Monika.
I want to believe (actually am very sure) that your January finding for Eva is correct. I think about this.
https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:JN9D-8Y7
But I would read the place as Pronussy, not Promessy. In Lithuania the place is called Nupronys. I found parish 6 km from this place (Hanuszyszki - Onuškis) but do not see Eva's birth record. I checked the years 1888-90. Not even a surname that matches.
Could you see if you can find more parishes in the area?
Alternative is to look for place called Promessy. I we also check Sophia's suggestion - Panevėžys.

Regarding the place name in Eva's manifest, could "Promessy" be a terrible spelling for Poniewiez (Polish spelling) which today is Panevėžys (Lithuanian spelling)?
Or should I switch to decaf coffee?

                                      Hi Trish,
I do not think these two places are the same. For this Vinzas, his last residence (same as the current residence of his father, so we get to see it written twice) is in Suwalki, a place name beginning with "Wy...." that I cannot quite decipher. For the manifest for Eva, the last residence is indexed as "Promessy" and I have not looked where that is on a map but it does not seem to be a close match for the town of Vinzas.
OK, I see you are asking about page 2 with his place of birth... Rymeka?
Regarding names, this list is showing the spelling IEVA as the Lithuanian form of Eve (Polish would be spelled Ewa) which fits nicely with the manifest, above.
It gives ELENA as the Lithuanian name that comes closest to English spelling Ellen.
Thanks for all the information you shared with us. We need a place to look for. Lithuania is a big area.
The document that holds the most information, is Eva's wedding license from 1923.
We have a date of birth as 24.12.1889. If this is not accurate, then everything suggests that Eva was born ca. 1888-89.
Father: Antoni. His name is confirmed in several cases. Born before 1870, abt. 1840-1870.
Mother: Ellen? A rare name in Russia / Lithuania. Think it's Elena / Helena.
Mother's maiden name: Kowaliska? How about Kowaleska (Kowalewska). Can the first letter be N ?
Sophia can you look at this? Can you also look at the place of birth and place of residence of Eva's parents. Can you read anything?
What about Eva's Manifest?
- Barb

Hi Barb and Jerry,
First, the marriage license from 1923. Residence of Eva's father says "deceased." Residence of Eva's mother says "Lithuania." Just as a note of interest, where it asks for the color (meaning of their skin) of the father and mother, that letter is a capital W indicating "white." Without context, I do not know if I would read that as a W but there you have it. Birthplace of Eva's father says "Russia" and of her mother it says "same." For mother's maiden name, I agree with you, Barb. I believe it is written "Kowaleski" which is a small spelling error for Kowalewski, so actually as a woman she would be Kowalewska. But that is my read based on how Polish names are represented. Once we get into Lithuanian spellings and name endings, I am far less familiar with those. As for the surname starting with an N rather than a K, I don't think so, just based on how the K is written for Eva's surname Krutulis (creatively spelled). I remember we talked about this issue of the mother's first name, Ellen, but I don't remember what was said. In all likelihood we leaned toward Elena or Helena, but Jerry could you please remind me where we landed on that question?
Barb, you mentioned Eva's manifest. Do we have one? I don't see it.
Sophia

Hi Sophia,
Thanks for taking a look! I agree, I wouldn't have recognized that as a W the first time I saw it either! I think the surname looks more like a K also. Yes, I think we agree that Ellen is most likely Elena or Helen/Helena. There are two possible Eva manifests in this thread: https://forum.polishorigins.com/viewtopic.php?t=19424&highlight= but when I tried to investigate each, I wasn't able to discover much, but it is always possible I missed something. If it is helpful to post them here I can!

Hi Barb,
Sorry I couldn't be more help with the documents and information I have to offer. I still have the other years of the censuses and children's baptisms if that is helpful at all. I will also share the obituary here just in case. Like you said, I think Elena or Helena sounds better than Ellen. When trying to search on Geneteka, I believe Kowalewska and other similar names appeared most commonly, but nothing seemed to match.
