Thank you so much for this. I enlarged it and shared it with my class just now. My students are so impressed with ancestry now due to my current search. Many are learning to research their own roots. They are only 11 and 12 years old, but it has created much interest. You have been a part of my search but also through my role as a teacher, you have impacted the learning of 31 students here in California. This forum and all its contributors, are treasures.

Good luck with your research,
I am hoping to find a good, readable history of Poland during the early 20th century (1900-WWI). I am interested in learning the conditions for "peasants" and "farmers" and what led to so many Poles leaving during this time. My grandparents left before WWI and I'd like to more fully understand their reasons. A personalized/anecdotal book would be welcome, as well.

My dzia dzia was Antoni Urbanczyk/Urbanski and my bacia was Maryanna/Mania Klos(s)/Kloska. They came over separatedly. My dzia dzia first in 1912 and she came over with my aunt Josephine who was only 1 year old at the time, in 1913. Attached is the ship's manifest for Antoni. I cannot find any information on Antoni's parentage, but before one of my father's cousins passed, he told me that Antoni had a brother named Walter. I do know Maryanna had 8 sisters and 1 brother. Her parents, my great grand parents were Michal Klos and Konstancja Lewandowska(i).

Hi,

The image that you provided with this post on Sept. 14th is not actually Antoni's ship manifest. It is an interesting document, and I am curious where you found it. Unlike a ship manifest, it does not name his ship, or when it sailed. It appears to be a record of the tickets that were purchased for sailing. It does not even provide the names of everyone who sailed - - for example, look at the first column, Volgnummer (Dutch for sequential number), which for Antoni is 52. Now scan up that column to people with a volgnummer in the 40's, and you will see that Fruma Friedman bought 3 tickets (the volgnummer column simply says "1/3" but this means numbers 41, 42 and 43) while Beile Dinerstein bought 2 tickets (volgnummer "5/6" which means numbers 45 and 46) and so on.

I did find the actual manifest for your Antoni Urbanski. He is on Line 24 of this two-page manifest of the ship Nieuw Amsterdam, which is the same ship the naturalization document that Trish posted said he was on, sailing from Rotterdam on August 10, 1912 and arriving on August 19. It gives his father's name as Jacob Urbanski and his last residence as Michalin, all of which agrees with what you knew already. Here is the summary page: https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:JJB8-2XQ

This is the first page of the manifest: https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/3:1:3Q9M-C9TC-X3K8-Q?view=index&personArk=%2Fark%3A%2F61903%2F1%3A1%3AJJB8-2XQ&action=view

This is the second page of the manifest: https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/3:1:3Q9M-C9TC-X326-G?view=index&action=view

On the second page, column 29 provides the place of birth for Antoni. It agrees with Wieniec, which is the same place of birth that I see from the documents that Barb pulled together. The second page also shows where is was going, which was to his brother Wladyslaw Urbanski in Chicago.

I hope this is a useful addition to your collection of records.

Best regards,
They say I cannot get it through my babcia according to the law of 1920, but even if I can't, I feel so much more connected to my father's side of the family and have a deeper appreciation more than ever of my Polish ancestry.
How amazing to see all his siblings and all. My cousin and I are hoping to go to Poland next summer and walk in their footsteps. Hi,
Antoni married Marianna on January 30, 1911 in the parish of Zbrachlin. I was unable to obtain this document. But this can be ordered in the Archives in Wloclawek.
Värmland is an amazing place. We had a cabin in Värmskog for 17 years. During the corona pandemic, we had to sell the house. The trip across the border to Sweden was impossible. Moving back to Norway took over a year. Hope to finish work on your Urbanczyk within a few hours.
Here are Antoni's 7 siblings including Władysław (Walter) mentioned in your first post. Walter was the oldest. Surnames for the children are written Urbański or Urbańczyk. Spouses are also mentioned.
I will send the rest of the Urbanski family this evening.
I started looking for Antoni's ancestors. I have found quite a few, but this week I am very busy at work. Will send you what I found on Friday or Saturday. Unfortunately in the church books from the area your ancestors come from the cause of death is not stated.
I was wondering if anyone has a recommendation for a site to find out what was happening/history in the area of Poland that my grandparents came from. I recently found out that my babcia's parents both died in the same year and was wondering if there was a plague, massive crop failures, storms, or????? In addition to their deaths, so close together, my grandparents emigrated soon after. (I keep imaging the end scene from Fiddler on the Roof where groups were forced to leave).

As I find out more about my Polish heritage, the search becomes more personal and I wonder about all the individuals and their lives.

Yes, please pass on anything you have found. I can private message you my private email if you think that is best but this site is fine as well, perhaps? I have almost everything I can find on USA ancestry sites, but for whatever reason, hit a wall once I cross over to Polish sites which is why I have spend over $3000 over the last few years asking for assistance from Polish archivists, but they have not provided much. You have given me more in the last couple of days than anything they have provided.

                                      Oh Barb!

This is like getting a hug from my babcia and all that came before. I have tears on my cheeks as I respond to this. I cannot wait to share this with my cousins and my children. You're an angel.

Most of the documents are written in Russian, a few in Polish. I loaded what I found on my PC, so if you want I can send it to you.
