Hi Zamagurie,

I was looking up my family roots and I saw your post . My roots are in Skotniki and I know that my great, great grandad - surname Zelik came from Galicia. are youin any way connected with these names/ places? I am planning to visit Skotniki soon ..

I meant to answer sooner but work distracted me and the matter slipped my mind. I think such minor variation of the spelling is not uncommon, even within such a "short" time frame as 150 years. I can't recall any examples to support this statement at the moment.

Hi,

This is something that makes me curious. I have seen many cases of villages which name was written in a different way that it is today. Not only in church books but also in old maps. We all know priests were among the most litterate people in a village, so I assume they were pretty aware of how the name should be written. And since they were polish men writing polish names, phonetics would not be a excuse for such misspellings. So it is a mistery to me why these things happened.

Here are my amendments to Gilberto's transcription. Gilberto has provided a link to a map which features Gorzyczany. However, the record clearly mentions Goryczany. These are possibly variations of the same place name. The same might be the case with Michocin/Miechocin

Place and date: Chobrzany, 21 March 1844
Declarant (father) Felix Kusmierczyk, residing in Goryczany, 27 years old and witnesses
Karol Nowak, 40 years old and Janko or Jakub Ortyl [?], forty-?? years old, both from Goryczany
Place of birth: Goryczany
Date of birth: March 20
Wife (mother): Agata (nee Piotrowski), 21 years old
Child: Wojciech
Godparents: Franciszek Mizialecki/Miziolek [?] and Maryanna Lipnowa/Lipkowa [?] [wife of Mr Lipka]

#34. death record. Goryczany.
Place and date: Chobrzany, 22 September 1842
Witnesses: Felik Kuzmierz (father of the deceased child, a manor farm hand), 22 years old
And Maciej Krysa/Kryza [?], an alms beggar from Jamulzna, 70 years old
Both residing in Goryczany
Day of death: 20 September 1842
Deceased: Kazimierz Kusmierz who has lived 4 days
Parents: Felix Kusmierz and Agata nee Piotrowski
[The priest’s name is hardly legible.]

I have managed to add a few details, but a few words are still uncertain.
Zazuwianka [?] is a grammatical form denoting a daughter of someone named Zazun/Zazuna

Witnesses: Jedrzej Chara [?], 45 years old and Jan Boczek, 43 years old
Groom: Maciej Zelik, 20 years old, born in Michocin [?], Galicia, Austria, son of Mikolaj and Agnieszka Zelik [mother’s maiden name not given], residing in this village [Skotniki]
Bride: Katarzyna Zazuwianka/Zazunianka [?], daughter of Tomasz Zazun/Zazuna [?] and Maryanna nee Mroczek, 18 years old, born in Skotniki, staying with her parents
Signed by the Skotniki parish priest Wojciech Dziatkiewicz because the parties involved were illiterate

Hi,
In November, I was able to go to the Sandomierz Region and photograph my Polish ancestors records. Of course, as I worked back my family jumped villages. I will attach three records that I would be very grateful if someone can provide the basic info such as names, marriage/birth dates, parents names, sponsors names (witnesses).
