Hello,

According to WF Hoffman and Professor Rymut, Sądej (Sadej where the a has a tail) and Sondej (pronounced in the same way as the former) originate from the root sąd meaning "court".

It is not a rare surname in Poland as demonstrated by the map of surnames (valid for the year 2000):

Sądej: https://nazwiska-polskie.pl/S%C4%85dej

Sondej: https://nazwiska-polskie.pl/Sondej

Sądaj: https://nazwiska-polskie.pl/S%C4%85daj

Even Sandej (which sounds like a Polish transcription of Sunday): https://nazwiska-polskie.pl/Sandej

Sadaj: https://nazwiska-polskie.pl/Sadaj

Please take a look at the search results at the Polish Origins Database which indexes major Polish and international genealogical sites. The tool also enables you to use an online keyboard with "Polish letters".

See: http://polishorigins.com/databases/index?s=S%C4%85dej

One of the results is the Lublin Genealogical Society which has indexed the death record of Witold Sądej in 1960:
http://regestry.lubgens.eu/viewpage.php?page_id=269&decade=196

Please keep checking the PolishOrigins Surnames Database - someone interested in the same surnames may turn up at our Forum in the future.

The sources we rely on

I hope this helps.

Kind regards,

Is there a British Isles DNA? There is Celtic DNA, common to Spain, Portugal, France and others. There is Germanic DNA, common to Scandanavia, Northern Germany, Normandy and Sicilly. Perhaps your DNA came from one or more of these other places. There were many Scots that settled in Poland in the 1500s.

                                      Meg,
Sadej, Sondej and Sądej (sounds Sondey) are polish surnames. www.herby.com.pl
If these surnames originated or not from Britain I cannot tell you.
Let me suggest you this link http://homepage.ntlworld.com/josephd.ross/index.html about Scottish in Poland.

As far as our family could tell (only to my great-grandparents) both my father's mother and father were "Polish." Now, I know that they lived in what is now Ukraine in the late 19th century, but they spoke Polish and I know that the area in which they lived had been considered to be part of Poland at one point. The surprise came when I did DNA analysis and instead of having a solid 75% or so from European roots (my mother's father's parents were both German), I came up with 50% from the British Isles!

So, the question becomes.... is "Sondey/Sadej" really a Polish name or could this have been a transliteration of "Sunday"? Could it be that some more distant ancestor actually emigrated to Poland several centuries before?

Thoughts anyone?
