Hello Kris

The search turned out to be incredibly successful. It took 4+ months but it returned documents proving my grandfather's residence in the city and I got certified documents proving it.

The documents found were:

1) Klucznik Ruwin (my grandfather) in the lists of residents of the city of Równe of Jewish nationality, 1935

2) Klucznik Jakób-Jankiel, in the list of members of Jewish community in Równe (father of Ruwin Klucznik)

3) Klucznik Ruwin in the list of voters to gmina administrations for 1932

Happy to share the researcher's details if you want them.

Kind regards,
Hello Kris

I got stuck doing the search on my own but found someone who is helping me with the search directly in Rowne.

Their search will include the following: (I quote from their email correspondence with me)

Materials concerning Równe and Równe county are stored:
-  in the State  Archive of Rivne Region in Rivne (lists of voters to the Polish Sejm for 1928, 1930, 1935, lists of voters to the Równe City Council, different lists of residents of Równe, conscript lists, etc.;
- in the State Archive of Volyn Region in Lutsk (lists of voters for 1928, 1935; materials of Jewish religious gmina, etc.)

I made a small investment (USD400) to get the search going. In theory it will take up to 3-4 months. If you want, I can keep you posted to let you know if it was really worth it.

Best regards,
Thank you Kris! That's awesome!
As life has it I've been living in Mexico for the last few years for work reasons.
Yes, he was Jewish and so am I.
I did research Jewishgen.org. Lots of very useful info. While I found his wife (Ruchul, born in Kopyczynce) I seem unable to find him.
I'm afraid I can't really read either Russian or Polish (quite embarrassing given my surname!). Will try and give the link you sent me a go but I very much doubt I will succeed....
Where do I find the DARO/31/1/38 link?
I have spoken with someone that specializes in this kind of search for Mexican descendants of Polish Jews last week. Will see what he offers and if it sounds legit I will let you have hia details with pleasure.

Thanks!
Assuming he was Jewish,
I would follow the link above if you think you could find the writing in old Russian handwriting.
If he was not Jewish, there’s other lists in there.
Arguable there’s more non-Jewish information floating around.
You can use the in-browser translation utility to help navigate it, though it won’t work once in the document.

You can use the Roots to Routes link below to transliterate the name. Though the spelling might not cover properly.
I got: Клучник

https://www.rtrfoundation.org/ocrsearch.php

Also, DARO/31/1/38 has a residents list from 1921 in polish. It’s a lot easier to go through.

And of course, there’s Jewishgen.org and jri-Poland you can search through.

You could also try to find a professional genealogical researcher. Let me know if you fund one, I may hire one as well. There are a lot of documents that haven’t been digitized yet.

I’ve heard the archives in Ukraine are not friendly.

Good luck, let me know if you find anything or need more help,

Hi there!
My name is Walter Klucznik, 50 years old from Buenos Aires Argentina.
My grandfather, Ruwin Klucznik was born in Rowne on February 7th 1909, to Jakov Klucznik and Rukhlya Kletzel.
I am trying to find proof of residence of my grandfather Ruwin in Rowne before 1937, when he emigrated to Argentina. I have looked everywhere but I am hitting a brick wall. My latest try was the Ucranian embassy at home, but my request does not seem to be taken seriously...
What would you suggest I do? Where could I find birth, residence, census, election documents, etc.
I have been reading this entire trail and find it fascinating.
Many thanks!

Thanks Barb and Sophia!

It’s on the Ukraine Wikipedia. There’s a young Ukrainian gentleman Alex Krakovsky scanning Ukrainian records and putting them up.
They’re not translated nor indexed, so old school Russian handwriting. Lots of scrolling involved.

Here’s the Jewish residents list for 1881-1919 for Rovno. I can share more links too if you want!

The photo is not uploading as it’s too large. I’ll try figuring something out and will try to report back..
It’s super cool to have found what we did!

Thank you very much for your help, my one great aunt who made it to the US actually released a book with her families correspondence, photos and a map of where they lived in Warsaw.

I imagine it’s pretty accurate.

Unfortunately, it mostly concentrates on her mothers side, so there’s no a lot of my own family history aside from some Small hints about my great granduncle.

Since I posted the originally message, I’m being lead to believe my great, great grandfather might have moved to Rovno much earlier than I originally expected, possibly in the 1880s, it appears that aside from my great grandfather, all the siblings I’ve found list Rovno as their birthplace.

I might have to hire someone to do some more extensive research if I want to find more info, if it even exists anymore

https://pl.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/13_Kresowa_Dywizja_Piechoty

It is now known as Symon Petliura Street

https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Symon_Petliura

If everything is correct, here’s where I think the current location is unless of course the street address changed. It’s not a very long street.
https://maps.app.goo.gl/Arbvnsy76vNvGmqB8

Hi Kris,

I think you have it exactly right. Using your link for the current location I used the streetview feature to "walk" down the street and see how it looks. It is reassuring to see that you can now know where in the city they lived, and all because someone happened to include that address on their ship manifest. Who knew we could solve a genealogy problem simply by finding an old postcard?!

Did you want some help with addresses in Warsaw, as well?

Regarding your other question about where to find the lists of inhabitants, I looked in the online Polish archives and did not find any. I do not know where else to look.

Best regards,
I appreciate the explanation of the photo,

I’m curious where you look for the inhabitants list. I’m having trouble wrapping my head around this as the province has changed hands so many times in recent history.
Would the Polish archives have them? The Ukrainian archives?

And just to add, the website that has the postcard also had this comment: "Ulica Aptekarska w Równem, przemianowana później na 13. Dywizji."
So now you know, your Ulica Aptekarska is on the map as 13-ej Dywizji, an homage to the 13th Division.

I was unable, Kris, to find any list of inhabitants. They are most commonly available for the northwest of Poland, sometimes in German as Seelenliste and sometimes in Polish as Lista Dusz or Meldunkowe, but I am not seeing these for Galicia.
