I understand the difficulty of figuring out how things work when you are still new to the forum. Many people prefer to make their own post about a topic because it is easy to see when someone replies. When you post in one of the long-running translation threads, you have to sift through the replies meant for other people in order to find yours. It can take some getting used to. At any rate, you got replies in both the German and the Russian translation threads, but I do want to add one point that was not commented on.

When you look on the German side of your document, it is pre-printed "wurde in Kirchspiel Zhitomir geboren" so yes, he was born in Zhitomir, but the baptism was in a town specified in handwriting, right before the word "getauft". Barb and I looked at it, and we see it as Pokoschewo, which is today's Pokashchiv in the Volyn Oblast of Ukraine.

Hope that helps.

Yes thanks for clarifying that Sophia. I think I'm getting the hang of the forum now, I just wish I'd discovered it ages ago as I've had so much help and new ideas for things to pursue.
