Hi Jackie,
Well, I haven't a clue! However, there was a recent conversation here on the forum in which Barb provided a link to a museum dedicated to the January Uprising of 1863, and the person she was helping apparently did receive good information from them.

This may be too far back in time to be relevant to your great-grandfather, who was only a year old at the time of the uprising, but I still think that tapping in to the knowledge of military history buffs might be fruitful for you.
