The Polish version is, as I wrote, Porfiriusz. Of course, one must always take into consideration the long view of history. The Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth prior to the Third Partition in 1795 was an ethnically and religiously diverse state and the diversity varied by region. The place where Katarzyna was born was in woj. Ruskie, which was seized by Austria in the First Partition in 1772 and thus when she was born the region was within what was known as Galicia. The Commonwealth was made up of the Crown lands of the Kingdom of Poland and the Grand Duchy of Lithuania. Interestingly at the end of the period of Polish history known as “The Deluge” (Potop) a proposal was made and accepted to change the Commonwealth of the Two Nations into the Commonwealth of the Three Nations by separating Ruthenia from the Grand Duchy of Lithuania and making it into the third nation of the Commonwealth. Although the change was accepted it never actually came to fruition. The religious makeup of region where she was born was primarily Latin Rite Catholic, Greek Rite Catholic, and Orthodox with a substantial Jewish population. The first language of many Greek Rite Catholics was Ukrainian so the name would also have been written using the Cyrillic Alphabet. The name originates from Greece and interestingly is more common in Portugal and Spain on the Iberian Peninsula which at first glance may seem strange. However, longer term history sheds light on that too. During the Greek Archaic period there were flourishing Greek colonies in Iberia which had a lasting influence on the region. The name in Spanish is Porfirio and it and other Spanish names of Greek origin made the jump across the “Big Pond” to Latin America. Porfirio is a well known name in Mexico. Porfirio Diaz was a Mexican general and long term President (or more accurately, Dictator) who ruled Mexico for over thirty years until he was removed from power in 1911 during the Mexican Revolution of 1910 to 1920.

If you are interested...Porphyrius is the Latin form of the Greek name Πορφύριος (transcribed using the Roman [Latin] Alphabet: Porphyrios) who was born in Macedonia in the 4th Century and died in Gaza on February 26, 420, which is his Feast Day. He is venerated in the Roman and Eastern (Greek) Rites of the Catholic Church as well as in the Orthodox Church. The father’s given name in Polish is Porfiriusz.
Given the location, the father could very well have been Easter Rite (Greek) Catholic. A likely date for Karolina’s father’s birth would be on or about February 26.

A small correction to the surname on the 1849 B&B record...it is entered as Jurczak rather than Jurczyk. Teodor & Anna were the farmers (Agricolarum is the Genitive Plural of Agricola, ae, m., farmer and since it is plural it stands in apposition to both Teodor & Anna). The occupation of Franciszka was a female servant (serva).

That said, I have no data collaborating any substantial link between my family and the coat of arms.
