I'm looking for find the birth record/registration for my ancestor John/Ivan Druzyk. The census records I've used from Canada mark that he was born in Blyszczanka, Galicia, and that he was Greek Orthodox. His fathers name was Prokop Druzyk (I've seen others list 1857–1922) and Tatiana Chorniuk (others put 1850–1914),

A date I've seen of birth on Ancestry someone had was 08 OCT 1882. The Galicia town finder has the Greek Orthodox parish for Blyszczanka as Uhrynkowce. He immigrated to Canada with his parents in 1897 I believe. Any help to locate his or his father's records is greatly appreciated. I am struggling to find the greek records for these areas online. I think Tatiana was actually born in a different area and this is her record https://www.ancestry.ca/search/collections/62358/records/4323628?tid=203426132&pid=282670011301&hid=1036916568822&usePUBJs=true.

Even if you know where I could look at the microfilms for 1882 births in that locality please let me know!

Hi Lamontf,

You mentioned that there is a Galicia town finder that shows the Greek Orthodox parish for Błyszczanka as Uhryńkowce but I am not certain about that. I can see there is a Roman Catholic parish there, but no mention of the Greek Orthodox parish, at least in the resource that I am using.

This link will take you to the first image of the book "Skorowidz miejscowości Rzeczypospolitej Polskiej z oznaczeniem terytorjalnie im właściwych władz i urzędów oraz urządzeń komunikacyjnych" which is the "Index of Placenames of the Republic of Poland with corresponding govermental agencies and offices, including communication facilities." It was published in the 1930s. If you go to Image 116 you will find the entry for Błyszczanka. The right-most column provides the church information.

https://www.wbc.poznan.pl/dlibra/publication/7126/edition/12786/content

Based on a map, I see that the town of Dupliska is nearby. Looking that up in the Skorowidz miejscowsci, you see on Image 379 that it has both a Roman Catholic and an Orthodox parish. Perhaps you could look for records there. Failing that, try to look at other nearby towns.

Nice map:
https://polona.pl/item-view/3099eb0a-a39b-4f5f-a010-5a4db1c7119a?page=0

Your town is in the upper right-hand corner of the map.

Also, may I just add that the ship manifest that you posted is the one from Hamburg, as a departure list. You should be able to find the manifest of arrival to Canada as well. Trish, is that what you had already found?

Good luck in your search,
Sophia

Hi Sophia and Lamontf,

Sophia, I think this is the website that Lamontf was referring to on how they found the parish for Blyszczanka. https://www.geshergalicia.org/galician-town-locator/

I was referring to the Hamburg manifest since it has the name of the town for the the family. The Canadian Manifest doesn't have a lot of information on it.

Regards,

Greetings to All and Sundry (Felicitationes Universis et Singulis),

Here are some things which I believe are worthy of consideration. There was no Orthodox parish in Uhryńkowce but there was a Greek Catholic (Ukrainian Catholic) parish there. Greek Catholic & Orthodox are not interchangeable. Some background...The split between Eastern and Western Christianity, which had been percolating for some time occurred in what was known as the Great Schism in 1054 when the Pope and the Patriarch of Constantnople excommunicated each other over a number of disputes between the two branches of the Christian Church. The mutual excommunications were lifted by Pope Paul VI and Patriarch Athenagoras I in 1965. Anyway, the Catholic Church is made up six Rites and 24 Churches (Including the Roman Catholic). The remaining 23 Churches are Eastern Catholic and are all sui juris (have and follow their own laws) and are all in communion with each other. In the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth a some Orthodox Churches, but not all, reunited with Rome as a result of the Union of Brest (Brześć Litewski) which took place in 1595-96. Thus began what was known as the Greek Catholic (later the Ukrainian Catholic) Church. The Ukrainian Catholic Church is one of the 23 sui juris Eastern Catholic Churches. Enough background.

A few years ago I recommended the Skorowidz miejscowości Rzeczypospolitej Polskiej as a resource for anyone with a limited command of the Polish language as an easy source for locating parishes in the Second Polish Republic. My go to source is the Słownik geograficzny Królestwa Polskiego i innych krajów słowiańskich . It is also the go to source for Zenon’s team of genealogy researchers and I believe there is no better source for info from the 19th Century and earlier. The series is made up of 15 volumes and contains somewhere around 14,000 pages. The Słownik’s entrty for Uhryńkowce states that it is the location of a Greek Catholic parish church and lists the population of Uhryńkowce as being made up of 155 Roman/Latin Catholics, 842 Greek Catholics, and 22 Jews. Note that there were no Orthodox in the population of the village. Błyszczanka belonged to the Greek Catholic parish of Uhryńkowce.

Here is the deal on Galicia...My interest in and knowledge of Galicia is not personal (none of my ancestors were from that part of Poland) but is connected to my gig of providing translations of Latin records. I recall that about four years ago I happened to translate two certificates issued by the parish of Uhryńkowce. The certificates were bilingual (Latin & Ukrainian). The village of Uhryńkowce is now known as Uhryn'kivtsi (Угринькіłвці) and is within Ternopil Oblast in Ukraine. The parish is under the patronage of the Blessed Virgin Mary. I would recommend contacting the parish to learn about where the records of interest are held since they do not seem to be available online.

In my opinion, all three members of the Druzyk family were members of the parish in Uhryńkowce in Europe. However, it would not be a surprise if they attended an Orthodox church in Manitoba. From what little I read the Greek Catholic parish where they lived in Manitoba was not founded until the early 1920s whereas an Orthodox church existed there from the earliest years of the 20th Century. Keep in mind that the Orthodox and Ukrainian Catholic liturgy were almost identical in terms of both language (Old Church Slavonic & Ukrainian) and the rites of the Divine Liturgy.

Trish, I would not bet the farm on the birth record you found being the correct one. The census and the ship’s manifest both state that all three members of the family were Austrian citizens in Europe (i.e. from Galicia) & the birth record is from a location beyond Galicia and in terrritory under the control of the Russian Empire.
So much for my intention to mind my own business in regard to this thread and to work on what is on my bucket list..

Best wishes to all,

Hi Sophia and Lamontf,

Sophia, I think this is the website that Lamontf was referring to on how they found the parish for Blyszczanka. https://www.geshergalicia.org/galician-town-locator/

I was referring to the Hamburg manifest since it has the name of the town for the the family. The Canadian Manifest doesn't have a lot of information on it.

Good luck in your search,
He immigrated to Canada with his parents in 1897 I believe.
