rsr~ I agree with Brian. I would guess that your relatives came from what is now the L'viv area of the Ukraine. What was Janow in Galicia near Lwów is now Ivano Frankovo (alt. sp. Frankove) about 13 mi. westnorthwest of L’viv in the L'vivs'ka oblast (region). It appears Pomorzany was considered part of the Tarnopol district of Galicia and is now Pomoryany (alt. sp. Pomoriany) in the L’vivs’ka oblast (region) approx. 55 mi. eastsoutheast of L’viv near the border with the Ternopil’s’ka oblast (region) of the Ukraine. After WWI I believe this area would have been considered part of Poland (Galicia ceased to exist), but would have been the Russian area and since your relatives spoke Hebrew, they would have been Jewish. Something I read said the L'viv area in the period between the wars was 50% Poles and 50% Ukrainian (Russian).

Hope this helps. Good luck. ~PolishLibrarian

Hi "rsr" (sorry, you didn't sign your name on your posting),

Could 'Pomorsana' actually be referring to Pomorzany? That's the closest spelling I could find. As you said, there are multiple Janów towns, and I see there are a few Pomorzanys also! Of course determining which is yours is the difficult part. Through my own experiences with other towns, I've done everything I can to make educated guesses but then had to research records from multiple locations in some cases to get the right one. If you haven't already, you might try searching passenger records for other with the same surnames you are interested in, to see if they came from neighboring towns (the steve morse site is great for these types of searches).

Doing a quick Google search, I did find a Janów and Pomorzany that are fairly near each other: http://goo.gl/maps/Xu7aS Without doing more in-depth research I can't be sure if this is "your area", but it may be one to investigate further.

Hope this helps,
I think it could be Pomorzany. There are three in Poland. Two of them have a Janow not too far, about 20 km.
1. gmina Wierzbica, powiat radomis, woj. mazowiecki (south of Radom)
2. gmina Konskie, powiat Konecki, woj. swietokrzyskie (south of Opoczo).
They listed a relative which I read as Ber(nard?) Santzer. If you could find his entry, maybe it could give another venue to trey.
Also, www.stevemorse.org gold form shows 28 Furgang, all of them with jewish names. It would be interesting check their places of origin, to see if any of them is in Janow/Pomerzany area.

I am trying to figure out where these places are in Poland. I'm researching my husband's family and these are his ancestors. According to his parents, this woman in question was born and raised 'in the country' and told the story of how she'd been promised tickets to the US if she could get to Warsaw. But when she got to Warsaw the person who'd made the promise was dead and it was her first time ever out of her small town - she was lucky enough to find someone who took pity on her and let her wash dishes and sleep on their floor in exchange for food; eventually she managed to save money for the trip.

The ship manifest I've found is attached, she and her sister are lines 24-25. It shows her place of birth as what I think is "Janow" and shows her father, Szulum/Solomon Furgang, living in "Pomorsana." It also shows that her nationality is Polish but she reads/writes Russian. Don't know if that is relevant?

Since Janow is a very common place name, I'm wondering if the references to Pomorsana, presumably nearby, help at all?

Any ideas/tips/suggestions of what else I can look for to figure this out are welcome! Most of my genealogical experience is with Germany, where I know the language... Poland and Polish are tricky!
