Additional info/question on the topic of barrel-makers. Could it be that the name applied to barrel-makers was regional in emphasis? When I look at the distribution of the name Bednarz, it is very heavy in the south of Poland, and especially southeast, whereas Barylski is focused in the center. Are there other names for barrel-makers? I could check distribution, and that would tell me. Especially if there was one that is more German in origin, which then might show up in the north and west, which would strongly suggest the names are regional.

Thank you. Clarifies the origin a bit. Even though Barylski has a connection with being a barrel maker, it is so rare (not the regular barrel maker word) I was wondering if there is a way to find out where it comes from. Distribution of the name Barylski in Poland today is extremely focused in Lodz and a few nearby areas, with a couple of outliers.

some names originated from a job a person was doing or a place where person was residing, so we may assusme that a barrel maker - polish name bednarz - was the "origin" of a surname. Deriviation of a word beczka is "baryla" - very big barrel. More on that topic you will find

Sorry, I was not clear enough on what I am looking for. I am trying to find the historical origins, such as where the name started, earliest use, etc. I have seen the translation from "barrell" before.
