Hi Shellie & Lorrir~ My grandfather does have an X in front of his name on the manifest & I did find further info. for him because he was detained. Although I believe he was waiting for a rail ticket from the brother-in-law in MN that he was going to, not waiting to be met by someone. Requirements for women may have been different though, especially if they were travelling alone. ~PL

From Stephen Danko's blog (stephendanko.com/blog/268) :
If you already have found the passenger manifest for your immigrant ancestor, take another look at the manifest and look for annotations. Two types of annotations were made. The first type was made prior to or at the time of arrival and includes:

■Numbers in the left margin (typically 2 to 7 digits), especially on lists of ships that sailed from England. This number is the contract ticket number and may be helpful in finding the individual in the British “Outbound Lists”.
■Rarely, a solitary number to the left of the passenger’s name will indicate a Head Tax receipt number.
■“Not Shipped”, “NOB” (Not On Board), “Did Not Sail”, or “Cancelled”, often with the entire line crossed out indicate that, for some reason, the passenger listed did not sail with the ship.
■Sometimes an entire line is crossed out, not because the passenger was not on board, but because they are officially listed on another page of the manifest.
■An “X”, “D”, or “Held” at the left of the manifest, between columns 1 and 2 or in the name column, means that the passenger was temporarily detained or held for a Board of Special Inquiry and the name may have been recorded with further information in a list at the end of the manifest.
■The notation “S.I.” or “B.S.I.” at the left side of the manifest before the name means that the passenger was held for a Board of Special Inquiry hearing and the name may have been recorded with further information in a list at the end of the manifest.
■The notation “USB” or “US Born” or “USC” (US Citizen) may have been made to indicate that the record is for a returning citizen of the United States.
■The letter “C” followed by a string of numbers (C-######), indicating the Naturalization certificate number, may have been made on the records of returning citizens.

Hi Lorrir,
I'm curious about what you said about an x in front of your grandmother's name. Can you share her manifest, or provide some information so we can see her manifest? I've seen many women on ship manifests who were detained and did not have an X in front of their names. It would be interesting to explore the possibility that she may have been detained after all.

I'm now looking for Antoni Cerwinski, the cousin who met my Great Grandmother when she arrived America. I have been told that she did not have an X in front of her name on the ship manifest, so someone had to be waiting for her. I am not finding much on him using Ancestry.com

Thank you so much for the information. My great grandmother was Alexsandra Rutkowski her parents were Leon and Ann Rutkowski, I have found the records that indicate my Great Grandmother was a Rutkowski when she left the country and became a Lewandowska in America. Jozef Lewandowski her future husband might have been from her home town, I have not found a link yet. Jozef Lewandowski seems to be the Polish version of John Smith and I am still looking for a date of birth for him.

Alexsandra's obit indicates that when she passed in March 1969, she had two brothers and a sister still alive in Poland.

I'm still looking.... Thanks for the help.

Dear friend Gilberto, you are the best Polish searcher on planet!, yes, I can only add Polish censuses 1990/2002, and Polish white pages confirm the possible origin of the Gma Aleksandra Lewandowska (thus, the family Lewandowski, as Polish surnames suffix -ska is for female), as in this very old Polish village Rokicie we can find as still living and farming families surnamed Lewandowski:
1. Barbara Lewandowska & family Lewandowski, Rokicie, Poland
2. Marianna Lewandowska & family Lewandowski, Rokicie, Poland
And also few Rutkowski's in nearly located villages.

I found this listing before while searching Ellis Island records. I doubted it was correct as she was not traveling with anyone, but looking closer more pieces fit. I was not sure if she was married when she came into the country.

What you refer as Pieslawa may be Piastowo, not that far Boguchlaw and Rokicie.

I am looking for my Maternal Great Grandmother's village in Poland. Her name was Alexsandra Rutkowski Lewandowski, She was born in Poland on December 11, 1894. Her fathers name was Leon Rutkowski and her mothers name was Anna. She married a Joseph Lewandowski but I'm not sure if she came into the US as a Rutkowski or Lewandowski, I have not found her immigration records.
