Veronica~ Looking at the Habas church marriage record, it appears that Anna’s mother’s name was Rosalia Załadoń. I searched www.moikrewni.pl/mapa (mapping of surname densities) and Załadoń doesn’t show up at all, but drop the Za and Ładoń shows up with highest density in Inowrocław, Zawiercie and Olkusz. The next highest density is in Tarnów, Katowice and the city of Poznań. This might be another variation on a surname that you will want to research. Good luck. ~PL (looking forward to seeing your pictures)

I have found what I believe to be her family name: Ziecina with the "e" having a tail. The town I think she is from is Brzozowa south of Tarnow near Nowy Sacz. I was told it is not a very common name.
We also were in Odrowaz, Some college kids were very helpful. I think our family Habas is no longer there, they have died off or moved.
I have wanted to post some photos but need to find out how. I will add Anna's surname into the listing.
I am glad I went when I did my Aunt is 97 and I made her a nice family book about her parents and their home land...Malopolske, whether all information is 100% ( I did add that disclaimer) it is an initial effort. Every one loved it.
I have had a bad bout of fatigue post brain radiation...so again glad I got over before that.
Hope to go back
Stay in touch
I'm never sure I am doing this right. Yes I think Anna came thru Baltimore. I am not sure about the 1910 census information. That may be her. I found a frank & Anna Habas living in the next ward over, but they would not have been married yet. It was with a family named Jana. I need now to turn to Poland & finding the threads. If the Baltimore ship is correct the Brzozowa seems a good bet. The other surnames in the marriage record should help too...wish I spoke or read Polish! Thanks every one

I will try to dig some more. I did find the Anna on line 13...I always hesitate because I have several birth years for her (& my granfather) I did not read the same info on the Ellis site, I will look again. Ute I am not following the church marriage recor. I had found the Cook COunty marriage cert with the 2 spellings of Anna's surname.

Veronica~ You won't find the immigration information I provided at the Ellis Island website because this Anna arrived at the Port of Baltimore. I found the manifest record on Ancestry and hoped that others would take a look as well as I am not particularly familiar with Polish towns etc. It appeared that it might correspond pretty closely with your info and warranted a closer look.

Hope this gets you closer to visting the village of your Annie. Have a wonderful trip. It is amazing to stand in the churches where your ancestors (in my case my grandparents who I never met) were baptized, just as you see on shows like Who Do You Think You Are.
The marriage records says Brozowa, but there was no place with that spelling in what was then Galicia.
As PolishLibrarian said, there is a Brzozowa, located 20 km south of Tarnow (gmina Gromnik).
thank you all for this hard work.

I searched on Ancestry.com. There's an Anna Ziecina (line 13 on the manifest) age 19, arrived May 10 1906 in Baltimore from Bremen on the Gneisenan. Young lady directly above her seems to be from the same town - looks like Krzozowa Gal. but maybe Brzozowa [this would coincide with the place on the marriage record]. Both were going to Chicago, Anna Z to an aunt. On the manifest it says the aunt is Anna Ziecina, then that name is crossed off & another name is written faintly above - has been transcribed into the index as Wan Sacha, at 82 Taylor St. in Chicago. This is probably the Anna in the 1910 census. Perhaps other eyes can read the writing better than my bifocaled eyes!

Shellie & Veronica~ The census record Ute provided a link to, looks like it might be your Annie. She's a boarder with the Cepijl family (they're ages 23 & 24) along with another boarder and is working as a dishwasher in a restaurant. Arrival 1906, age 23 (close enough to the age of 22 on the church marriage record) and your guess of 1905 for arrival. Of course no info on where in Poland she came from here.

My cousin told me she may have come from Tarnow, but we don’t remember the source of this information. I will be visiting Poland the 2nd week of May and plan to visit my ancestral Habas villages Odrowaz and Morawczyna. If possible, I’d like to figure out my grandmother’s surname and birthplace before my trip.
Any thoughts on the Polish spelling of the surname that sounds like Zinzina or Zinzinia?

Shellie and Veronica,
I'm attaching the church marriage record that gives her parents' names as Stanislaus (?] and Rosalia Zatadon [Szatadon?] and the place of origin as Brzowo, Galicia. The name looks like Zincina in the church marriage record, and the name really exists, see for example here:
https://www.familysearch.org/search/records/index#count=20&query=%2Bsurname%3AZincina~
In the marriage licence it looks like Zescinak on top and Zincina further down. In the Ellis Island databse there are also three immigrants with the name Zencina (I don't have time at the moment to check where exactly their last residences were, i.e. if they were close to Brzowo, and further details given in the ship manifest, but that's another possible spelling):
Name of Passenger Residence Arrived Age on Arrival
1. Eleonora Zencina Nizni, Austria 1910 16
2. Janeg Zencina Travink 1902 27
3. Johann Zencina Rudolfsvert, Austria 1914 17

I am posting this message for our new member Veronica Maine who is trying to solve a mystery about her grandmother's surname:

My grandfather, Frank Habas came to the US through Ellis Island in 1906. My grandmother Anna may have come around 1905. I do not know the original spelling of my grandmother’s name – phonetically the name is Zinzina, or Zinzinia. They met in Chicago and were married in 1910 in St. Adalbert’s in Chicago. I have a copy of the marriage certificate, but her name appears to be spelled phonetically there also. Later they settled in Ohio.

I have learned much about my grandfather’s Habas family, which is also discussed here:
http://forum.polishorigins.com/viewtopic.php?t=410

However, I know nothing about my grandmother’s family. My cousin told me she may have come from Tarnow, but we don’t remember the source of this information. I will be visiting Poland the 2nd week of May and plan to visit my ancestral Habas villages Odrowaz and Morawczyna.
