Notation at bottom (deals with insignificant legalities):
After the 3 banns had been announced on the 3rd, 4th & 5th Sundays after Pentecost and since no impediment* had been discovered Pawel K??siak, the assistant pastor blessed the marriage.

Note: * certain impediments were so grave that no dispensation could be granted (e.g. an existing valid marriage or the intention never to be faithful to the spouse—deals with intention which is completely different from an instance/instances of infidelity. The intention goes against one of the goods/expectations essential to marriage whereas instances of infidelity are lapses due to human frailty which fall short of how a spouse should act.
During the 19th Century the impediments which were liable to be discovered usually were due to consanguinity or affinity from which a dispensation would be required before the wedding could take place. The expectation was that someone in the parish would be aware of the connection and let the priest know so that he could obtain the required dispensation. The most well known dispensation from affinity involves Henry VIII of England and Catherine of Aragon. Catherine was betrothed to Henry’s older brother who died before the marriage was consummated but according to the laws at the time Henry & Catherine were related by affinity from which the Pope granted a dispensation. Everything was just fine until after Catherine was past child bearing age and Henry wanted a male heir and not just the daughter they had together. Henry wanted an annulment but didn’t get one which resulted in Henry declaring himself head of the Church in England by which he ended up with his six wives. In short dispensations were meant to make marriages legal and thus eliminate grounds for annulments in the future.

All this kind of knowledge and a dime would get you a transfer on any bus or El in Chi-town in the 60s when transfers were free.

Hello Jack,

The marriage record is approximately 95% legible but not easily legible and requires intense squinting at the computer screen. Rather than posting a jpg image it would be helpful to post the link to the archival image.

Some background about ecclesiastical records….The keeping of Sacramental records was first mandated by the Council of Trent in 1575 as a part of the response to the Protestant Reformation. The decree was not fully implemented in most countries of Europe until about 1600. The original mandate was to keep records of baptisms and marriages and by the second quarter of the century parishes also began to keep records of Christian burials. The 1801 marriage record was composed in what is known as the short paragraph style. Short paragraph style marriage records are heavy on dealing with the fulfillment of legalities and very light on genealogical information. The structure of the record is as follows:
1. The opening gives the date of the marriage expressed in ordinal numerals.
2. The dates of the announcements of the banns. The banns were intended to discover any possible impediments.
3. The statement that no impediment was discovered.
4. Names of the contracting parties (groom & bride).
5. Elements of the ritual—the priest questioned the couple about whether they freely intended to marry. After receiving their mutual consent the priest blessed their marital union. None of this records the words spoken in the vernacular.
6. The names of the two witnesses.

Since only numbers 1, 4, and 5 provide any information of genealogical import those are the only portions of the document which I will translate.

#1: Date of the wedding: Anno Domini millesimo octingentesimo primo die decima quarta Januarii…. = On the twelfth day of January in the one thousand eighteen hundred first year of Our Lord…

#4: The groom & the bride: Benedixi...Nobilem* Dominicum Gawronski et laboriosam** Annam Olszewska = I blessed the Noble* Dominik Gawronski and the industrious** Anna Olszewska
Notes: *Nobilis/Noble: The lowest level of a member of the gentry (szlachta), owner or leaseholder of a parcel of property...had noble blood but no real wealth. Often gentry of this level were no better off than peasants.
**laboriosus/industrious: an adjective used to denote an individual as a peasant.

#5: The witbesses: adstantis testibus laboriosis* Francisco Ż….zy et Christophero (illegible surname) ex villa Kumanowice = in the presence of the industrious* witnesses Franciszek Ż….zy and Kristof (illegible surname) from the village of Kumanowice. (This is part of the 5% of the text which I find illegible.)
Note: *laboriosus/industrious: an adjective used to denote an individual as a peasant.

In Latin the enclitic -ce intensifies the pronoun which is difficult to render in written English. Here is the grammar of this portion of the entry. Hacce and ipsa are modifying die (the Ablative Singular which here is an “Ablative of Time When” and is expressed without a preposition). The translation of the text... “hacce ipsa die...natam” is “born on THIS day itself” I suppose that the intensification can be expressed by rendering the pronoun in upper case letters while everything else is in lower case. All this is rather esoteric for a simple and mundane historical record. Perhaps the priest decided to mix things up a bit because he was bored or perhaps he just wanted to show off his knowledge of subtleties of Latin grammar. Who can say?

Forgot that you get quite a bit of snow, interesting that it's still that cold and prone to frost. Being in a temperate climate you forget those things; I usually plant out tomatoes in the last month of winter.

The priest who wrote this lovely term at least had legible writing.

I have a record where one word has me confuddled - “hacce ipsa”? - I presume it means either today or yesterday (that's a guess). The record is from Rychnów parish, and I have translated it as follows:

1812 – 17 May – Wygańki – record 7
In the same year I as above baptised an infant born “hacce ipsa” day about the hour of 9 in the morning. Daughter of the legitimate marriage of Szymon and Jadwiga, semi self-supporting farmers (added at a later date the surname Pyrzanowski), to whom the name was given Petronella.Godparents: Wawrzyniec Bogaczyk and Józefata wife of Macczak.

Directow Skolæ capitalis Wolialiensis—your reading is partially correct except for some spelling errors. Disregard the stuff about Sokol. The Latin of the entry says nothing about Sokol. The data Sophia provided is interesting but it is not at all connected to what is written in the Latin entry. The correct spelling is director scholæ. Schola, scholae, f. is a school. Capitalis is what one can guess in the English— capital. The difficulty comes in Vokaliensis, a 3rd declension adjective naming a place. Since I am not familiar with the geography I can’t tell you the name of the place. Drop the adjectival ending “iensis” and see what place you can find that fits the bill. Premyslensis is easy. Drop the endinbg “ensis” and Przemyśl is the obviouis place

Go to image 116 and look in the right-most column. There you will see the Sokaler Schulbezirk (yes, this book is written in German, this is the Sokal school district) and there in the listing for the Hauptschule (secondary school) is your Johann (Polish: Jan) Krupiński. I believe the abbreviation "Dir." is for Direktor, which should mean the same thing as Principal.

I transcribe the following:
Married 16 Feb 1841 at #119. Casimirus MILES emeritus filius Jacobi and Dorotheæ Bryniarski of Niva, single, 38y. Joanna filia Catharinae Babczaka, single, 23y. Witnesses: Andreas Babczakiewicz and Jacob Rokucki.
When you transcribe the Latin the case endings change according to the rules of Latin syntax.

Translate: Kaziemierz A RETIRED SOLDIER son of Jakub and Dorota Bryniarska of Niwa, single, 38y. JOANNA * daughter of Katarzyna Babczakiewicz. Witnesses: Andrzej Babczakiewicz (this would be Janina's uncle, my gg Grandfather) and Jakub Rokucki.

The big long (2+ lines) across the top of the record I assume is regarding the underage bride. Joanna Babczakiewieczowej (sure glad I didn't have to learn how to spell this in first grade ).
The good news for Joanna is that she probably never went to school at all and didn’t learn to spell her maiden name. If she ever did learn to spell it would have been later in life after she had married. Keep in mind that Galicia had the lowest level of literacy of the three areas of partitioned Poland. The Prussian (German) area (the Provence of Posen) had the highest level of literacy. It is the only area where entries in the Słownik geograficzny lists the number of literate individuals in a village or town. Many villages had over 50% literacy rate. The literacy rate in 19th Century rural America was not all that great either. How could you keep your children on the farm after they learned to read and write.

It is the statement in Polish of her guardian, Wojciech ?islowski granting his permission for the marriage of the underage bride to take place. If I were a woman living in Galicia in 1841 I would not be happy to be considered underage at 23. Then again I would not be thrilled with having to follow a different set of rules from those young men had to follow. I do understand that a single female living with her parents was not considered emancipated from their authority until she married. It just doesn’t seem like something about which I would be happy.

Not really. It is just the civil permission (marriage license) info.

Notes: *Her given name was Joanna (Polish) Joan (English. Janina (Polish; Jane in English is Janina in Latin. Joanna (also spelled Johanna) is the Latin feminine form of the masculine name Joannes [also spelled Johannes] (Latin) Jan (Polish) John (English) hence the confusion about whether it is the bride’s name or her brother’s name. It is the bride’s name.

As always, thank you Dave for your thorough explanations. I always learn something new when reading any of your responses to me and others. I had 3 years of Latin in high school, but have not retained much of the case ending & syntax rules (just enough to get me in trouble).
I see that one of my cheat sheet lists of given names in Latin, English & Polish does show Latin Joanna is also Joanna in Polish. TY.

I did get some of the Polish words in the top note this morning to confirm it was about permission to marry. I did wonder about the Wojciech signature. I wonder if I'll ever be able to figure out his surname - curious if I could find a family connection or if it was solely a legal decision. Joanna's mother Katarzyna (eldest child of my gggGFR) had 3 illegitimate children - 1808, 1812, & 1819 (interesting age spread...), never married, and died 6 years after Joanna married in 1841.

We were always Babczak in the US. In about 2006 I found my grandfather arriving in 1909 as Babczakiewicz and was very surprised at the length of the name. Then what a surprise to see Babczakiewieczowej with additional -owej ending in this record! Gerald A. Ortell's book on Polish Records of the Catholic Church explains some of the feminine endings & case endings - like -anka and -szczanka and -ej, -owej & -ego, etc., which I am first seeing in these early 1800 records that just came online.

Thanks Ted. I think I missed the mi after Casimirus, which then continues on the next line. I'd been working on these records for several hours on Sun. and starting to go a little cross-eyed.
This morning I see the note across the top is in Polish and starts out with "guardian of the minor" so Joannis Babczakiewiczowy was her guardian and is her mother's brother, my 2nd great grand uncle.

Translate: Kaziemierz ? emeritus (what does this phrase mean?) son of Jakub and Dorota Bryniarska of Niwa, single, 38y. Janina daughter of Katarzyna Babczak. Witnesses: Andrzej Babczakiewicz (this would be Janina's uncle, my ggGrandfather) and Jakub Rokucki.

The big long (2+ lines) across the top of the record I assume is regarding the underage bride. Joannes Babczakiewieczowej (sure glad I didn't have to learn how to spell this in first grade ). Is this Janina's name or is it referring to her eldest brother Jan who would be 33 in 1841? Janina was born to the unmarried Katarzyna in 1819, so there is no father to give permission for the marriage. I don't need an exact translation, just the overall meaning.

Is there anything important in the note across the bottom?
