I have trying to collect as much information as I can. This is so important and helpful.

ANYTHING at all you can think of is wonderful. This is only a part of my lineage. I have so far to go once I figure MOST of this out.

That's so interesting! Thank you!!
I was doing some surface Galicia research over the weekend, just to learn more of Galicia history. And from my understanding most of the Ruthenians were initially "Greek Catholic", while some also became Roman Catholic. I did not know the priests could come and go.

Also, I understand that if we are looking "around Dobromil" since all records point to there and now we cannot pinpoint Arlamow (for the younger John CYCYK) then the area of Przemyl would be the point of where most of those older town archives are kept? Does this sound correct?

I have been all over Gesher Galicia but it's 1. hard to translate, and 2. I am still not sure which EXACT area I should be looking for on there in the 1880s. (I am a member)

Hi,

I know Barb gave you some good maps to help you locate the places your Cycyk family came from. I would like to provide you with a link to one old map that you may like to add to your collection. Based on when it was drawn, there was no border in between Arlamow and Dobromil at that time:
https://www.davidrumsey.com/luna/servlet/detail/RUMSEY~8~1~280029~90053299:aramow?annotId=369807280

There are a few topics I feel have been left unanswered, that I want to try to address. One was this part of a post of yours on November 6:
"There was only a single BANDROWSKA, and I was told in Poland/Aus at the time you would normally see BANDROWSKY/BANDROWSKI - as "SKA"??"

There are some surnames in Polish that are considered adjectives, and in Polish grammar, adjectives have endings that change based on gender. When you see a name that ends in -ski it is for a male, and that is changed to -ska for females. So in your case, a Bandrowski would be the masculine form and Bandrowska would be the feminine form. All of that got flipped on its ear, though, when they emigrated to North America and the girls born into that family would simply be named Bandrowski as well. As for the difference between names ending in -ski and those ending in -sky, I would not put much emphasis on that, by which I mean that you should search records for both spellings to see if you find people related to you. According to Polish spelling rules, the ending cannot be -sky, but when you had people who arrived with travel documents written in the Cyrillic alphabet who had to transliterate their names into the Latin alphabet, it could easily have become -sky or -ski. If the topic of surname endings in Polish names is of interest to you, you can read more about it here: https://www.polishroots.org/Research/SurnameSearch/Surnamesendings?PageId=118

On Nov. 8 you wrote: "I also DO think there is a connection to the GRZEGORZ name/line." I cannot tell for sure from the way you wrote that whether you are recognizing Grzegorz as a given name or if you think it is a surname. In the case of the manifest we were talking about, it was his given name Hryc in Ukrainian, equivalent to Grzegorz in Polish and Gregory in English.

Lastly, you mentioned that you saw a Holocaust reference to Cycyk. There are many Cycyk listed in the Arolsen records. Most of them appear to be born much later than your direct ancestors, but at least some of them could be descendants of the same people you are descended from. For many, there is minimal info but for others you do get a place and year of birth. One person was from "Arlanio" which could be Arlamow, spelled incorrectly. Another is from Lacko. One record even includes the photo of a woman but I cannot tell where she was from. You may like to go through these and see what you can learn:
https://collections.arolsen-archives.org/en/search/person/70620794?s=Cycyk&t=636299&p=0

Good luck with your research,

Sophia, I noticed she was under Hyrc. I also DO think there is a connection to the GRZEGORZ name/line.
I also wanted ask about the person who married them. Someone else I had asked brought it up about John and Thecla's marriage papers. Is this a big deal?
I will attach it.
Vladimir Vlad___ ? he was Rutherian, Lived in Chester, PA but came to Wilm. DE to marry them.

Hi,

Since you asked, I took a look. The man who married them was Vladimir Derzyruka. He was a priest, and Ruthenian as you mentioned.

You can see quite a bit about him:

1. Here he is arriving (not for the first time) at Ellis Island, accompanying his bishop, Bishop Soter Stephen Ortynsky (shown on the manifest as Ortinsky). You will see Vladimir Derzyruka on line 11, and if you advance to the next page of this two-page manifest you will see that he was headed "to his parish as rector and secretary." He arrived on the 24th of August, 1914, in plenty of time for the November wedding of your John Cycyk and Thecla Steckyj:
https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:JJ7L-RJQ?lang=en (ignore the transcription that he was Italian; he was not)
You may be interested to know just how important Bishop Ortynsky was. While this link will only take you to a preview of a record rather than the full record, you still learn a great deal about him:
https://www.jstor.org/stable/24584745

2. Going back to Vladimir Derzyruka, here is his WWI draft registration:
https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/3:1:33S7-91JW-9MMC?view=index&personArk=%2Fark%3A%2F61903%2F1%3A1%3A4DC6-HCZM&action=view&cc=1968530&lang=en&groupId=

3. And here he is with his family in the 1920 census:
https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:MFR5-NS2?lang=en

To your question of whether it was a "big deal," we often pay attention to who is marrying a couple, when we need a clue to what their religion was. In your case, I think you already knew they were Greek catholic.

Hope you find all of this interesting.
Marriage record ca. 1893
Petition for Naturalization 27.06.1892
Social Security Applications 7.06.1891
So he was born ca. 1892.
Unfortunately, these years are not found in the church records in the parish of Kwaszenina.

Yes, I have noticed that. Again, with lack of education, this does not suppose me. The one big consistent through the majority of these records is is place of birth (Dobromil), Wife (Teckla) home (Heald St, Wilm, De), and profession (RR mechanic, previous farm labor)

I cannot find his birth records as well. I think you may be on to something- he "grew up" or lived in Arlamów, but may not have been born there, but probably very close. I am not good with the maps and figuring out the towns/localities.

If in a social security list from 1937 you found Jan's mother listed as Bandrowski then this could be a confirmation that his parents were Jacek Cycyk and Anna Bandrowska. Can you share this document?
Ok, so we are looking for younger Jan CYCYK's birth certificate. Let me look around. Which archives do you think he may be in?

He is entered with a question mark. It cannot be seen in the chart. As you can see his mother (whose parents are correct) died in childbirth. His father remarried immediately. I have great faith that this is correct, but faith is not enough. We need confirmation in the form of a birth certificate.

I doubt whether the Stecki family originally comes from Luka Wielka. There are a few years missing from church records from the parish Mikulince where Luka Wielka belonged, but there are not many surnames Stecki to be seen. I think they moved there after 1893 or lived nearby.
We can only see the family of Teodor Stecki and Anna Slominska. They married in 1893 in Luka Wielka, and their children were born there. It seems that Anna's home and Teodor moved here. After 1893 we can see Basili, his wife Katarzyna, Jozef and Maksimilian, who in 3-4 cases were witnesses at baptisms or weddings.
Everything suggests that Teodor (born ab. 1867) was Basili's brother since Basili was godfather to Teodor's firstborn child.

I found no documents that link Jan to Jakob / Jacek as a father. But if this is correct then the others you can see in the small family tree are in the family.
I will soon write my thoughts about the Stecki family that I tried to find something about yesterday.

Yes, I do think Teckla and John met in the US.
How are you figuring out the EXACT location from which they came (which archives?, where on the map)

If I read your family tree correct that Jacob (Jacek) had Jan (John, Anna, and Micheal) is this correct?
Also there was only 1 place, I could find BandrowSKY listed for John as his mother. It was on a Social security index from 1937. Otherwise, I cannot find that last name anywhere else.

Someone posted on the Poland board regarding my last name this.. not sure how or if it fits?
