Hi Barb,
Thank you for your reply, and for the clarification, although I was really hoping they might be the same person. I am afraid I have gone as far as is possible with my genealogy quest. I do appreciate all of the help that everyone at PO has provided.

I agree with Sophia. Apolonia Bakucienska is not the same person as Apolonia Ponikiewska, even though both were married to a man named Maciej Chrzanowski.
Your Apolonia died in 1829, while the other died in 1848. Your Maciej also died in 1829, whereas Bakucienska’s husband died before 1822.

Your link for the 1776 record in Turnice does not function properly. I had the same thing happen to me, trying to post a link the other day. I am not sure why this is happening. To answer your question about accessing records that Family Search has locked, it is not enough just to go to a library that has access to Family Search. It needs to be a library designated as a Family Search Affiliate Library. Even then, I had the experience of still being denied access to a locked record, much to the consternation of the librarian at that library who thought that their designation as an Affiliate Library should have granted access to locked records. Still, it is worth giving a try if you can find such a library near you. Otherwise, you need to go to an actual Family History Center.

I took a quick look this morning at the records for Szelkow parish. They are fairly easy to navigate as tabular records up until just a few years before 1790 and then they change over to paragraph style records which make it much slower to search. Out of curiosity, have you gone through the decade or so just before and after 1790, to see if your Maciej and Apolonia are having other children baptized in that parish? Or are they acting as godparents for other families? It might give you a sense of whether they are in the area of Szelkow or not, during the years of most interest to you.

I did see one interesting record in Szelkow, a baptism in 1787. It is the 7th entry, for a child named Marianna. Her father is Maciej and her mother is Apolonia, but the way the page was bound into the book makes it difficult to read the surname of either parent with much certainty.

I am not suggesting that this is actually your family. However, it is the sort of record that would be easy for someone to skip over, when scanning down a page to try to find the person you are looking for. That is why it can be useful just to know whether your family was truly present in the parish in a particular timeframe.

As to your question about Apolonia Bakucienska vs. Apolonia Ponikiewska, I think this may be something of a stretch. Even so, it is interesting, so are you able to post images of those records, or links to them?

I am unable to get the link to the Geneteka page to work, but in the Kuyavian-Pomerian voivo. there are the birth records for a maciej Chrzanowski in 1770 Ruda. This is the record that I need to go to a FS facility to view.

This is the link to the 1776 record for the birth of a Maciej in Turznice, it should work this tiem. It is the record under Feb 20th. The second entry from the bottom:

The Geneteka link also shows a birth under 1793 for a Bartholomew Chrzanowski with parents of Maciej and Apolonia in Rogowo in the K-P voivo. As well as the following for Sophia born in Ligowko in 1797 with parents of Maciej and Apolonia. It is the last entry on the left side of the page:

1821 Catherine (maybe her 2nd marriage) with parents of Maciej and Apolonia Bakuta in Kurowo
1822 Lucia with parents of Maciej and Apolonia Bakucienska in Mochowo
1824 Sophia parents are Maciej and Apolonia Bakucienska in Mochowo
1826 Mary Magdalene parents are Maciej and Apolonia NN in Mochowo
1832 Bridget parents are Maciej and Apolonia NN in Mochowo

I can post links to these records, if I can locate them, but I did not want to get too crazy.

The link to the record for Marianna in Szelkow does look promising as well. I am surprised that I missed that record. I think I have looked at almost every record for the Szelkow region. That is wonderful that you were able to locate it. Thank you again.

I will double check on our local library. Like your library they are under the assumption that they are an affiliate.
