Hi everyone, I hope you all had a good Easter! Since Daniel (Polish Genealogist) can't look more into the family right now, I started following another lead. So, I mentioned in one of my previous posts that Aline is also related to a Walter Tiazkun and Michael & John Boburka. I believe that Michael and John are siblings or closely related cousins of Walter. I have looked into each of Walter's sibling's obituaries (He has a brother named John, which is why I think John Boburka could be Walter's brother, but used his Mother's (Mary) maiden name. John could just be a cousin though) and it has Mary Boburka listed as their Mother as well as Theodore "Frank" Tiazkun as their Father. I believe that Trish listed Theodore "Frank" Tiazkun and Mary Boburka's obituaries in a previous post.

In Mary's obit, her Father's name is listed as Michael Boburka and her Mother is listed as Pauline Boburka. When researching Mary Boburka, I found something on Ancestry that is a ship manifest. I can't read it very well, so I asked AI to help decipher the document. AI said "Historical records for Michael Boburka indicate he was indeed traveling with family members, specifically his wife and daughter. While they do not appear on page 96 of the S.S. Rhein manifest you provided, a Michael Boburka (often listed by the Polish name Michał) is documented arriving in the United States during this era with the following companions:
Mary Boburka (Marya): His wife, recorded as approximately 28 years old at the time of travel.
Pauline Boburka (Paulina): His daughter, recorded as approximately 3 years old.
Journey Details
Origin: The family came from Butla (also known as Bitlia), a village then located in the Galicia region of the Austro-Hungarian Empire. This area is now part of modern-day Ukraine but had a significant Polish-speaking population at the time.
Michael's Role: He is typically listed as a Laborer (robotnik) on these manifests."

My issue with this "translation" is that it states Mary as his wife and Pauline as his daughter, which we know that Paulina is his wife and Mary is his daughter. It does mention the region Butla. I am attaching it in this post, if someone wants to review it and see if they can decipher it better than I can.

Also, I have been in contact with one of Aline's very distant cousins who has been helping since the start. She does not know how they are related, so we have been working together to see what we can come up with. She said they have a relative in Poland that knows a bit of family history, so she reached out to her yesterday to see if any of the discrepancies, ie. Jarockzo vs Jacejka, etc. mean anything or if some names got lost in translation. I will update once I hear back from her.

Thanks for reading!
Sera, the manifest you just posted is one that Trish already posted on March 14 and which I already helped decipher the handwritten notations on March 15.

Okay, since the last few things I have posted had already been discovered (sorry. My brain is fried from tax season and I really don't come close when it comes to investigations, compared to y'all lol.) I do actually have brand new information about Mike's stay in the Mauthausen Concentration Camp. I received the documents from the Arolsen Archives this morning. I have just been able to dive a little deeper into them since coming home this afternoon. There is record of vaccine experimentation enclosed, and out of respect for Michael and family, I don't want to share his most vulnerable documented experiences on a public forum. Sophie, Trish, and Debra--I will share with you in an email, if you are interested for information/knowledge about Mike. This could be helpful for the search. It does mention he was married to a woman named Katharina previously. Below I will list his timeline from birth to 1951 - this is just what I gathered from using Google Translate, so this will probably have some inaccuracies/discrepancies. I am omitting the more sensitive topics for the forum.

I. Early Life & The Move to Germany (1918–1940)
November 11, 1918/1921: Born in Bitla (also recorded as Bitlab/Belta), Poland.
Note: Nazi records consistently used 1918, while he personally used 1921 in all post-war applications.
1939 – October 15, 1940: Worked as a farmworker for Farmer Aschinger in Lüben, near Hannover.
October 16, 1940 – March 31, 1941: Moved to Berlin to work as a Kitchen Helper/Cook at the prestigious Hotel Kempinski (Kurfürstendamm 27). He lived on-site during this period.

II. Arrest & The Civilian Prison System (1941–1942)
1941 – June 1942: Lived at Ritterstrasse 32 in Berlin-Kreuzberg.
June 12, 1942: Arrested by the Berlin police.
June 17, 1942 – December 16, 1942: Served a six-month sentence at the Berlin-Tegel Prison (Seidelstraße 39) for a charge of "Grand Theft."
December 16, 1942: Upon completing his sentence, he was not released. Instead, he was taken into "Preventive Detention" (S.V.) by the Gestapo and held at the police prison at Alexanderplatz.

III. Mauthausen Concentration Camp (1943–1945)
January 26, 1943: Arrived at Mauthausen Concentration Camp as part of a transport from Berlin. He was assigned Prisoner Number 22509.
February 5 – March 5, 1943: Subjected to medical experimentation by SS Dr. Karl-Josef Groß.
June 30, 1943: Underwent surgery at the camp infirmary (Krankenbau) to drain an abscess on his right face cheek.
August 30, 1943: Transferred to the Wiener Neudorf sub-camp. Initially assigned as an unskilled laborer for an aircraft engine factory.
September 30, 1943 – May 1945: Reassigned as a Cook in the Wiener Neudorf camp kitchen, a position he held until the camp was liberated at the end of the war.

IV. Post-War Migration (1945–1951)
1945 – 1946: Lived in Enns, Austria, and Reims, France, as a Displaced Person (DP).
September 14, 1946: Married Lucy Dulski in Ste. Marie aux Chênes, France.
September 29, 1951: Emigrated to Canada, departing from Marseille and arriving in Halifax aboard the ship "Billiton." He officially adopted the name Mieczysław Orawski.

V. The Search for Reparations (1954–1965)
January 1955: The Bavarian State Compensation Office in Munich officially opened an investigation into his history of imprisonment to evaluate his reparations claim.
March 19, 1963: His Canadian lawyers (Maleyko, From & Lyons) filed a formal compensation application under the Federal Compensation Law (BEG).
September 5, 1963: The International Tracing Service issued the definitive Certificate of Incarceration, proving his stay at Mauthausen and his identity as "Nikolai Boburka."
March 10, 1965: German archives released the clinical medical records of the 1943 experiments to the government in Cologne to finalize the assessment of his injuries.

Summary Table

Hi all! Daniel (Genealogist) said he can't really tell anything from the documents that we were able to provide because he has no way of checking into other resources to verify if this is the same family or not. Basically, he doesn't want to speculate until the archive in Lviv opens back up. However, upon researching Anastaja Locko on Ancestry, I came across this document that could* match the family, but the dates don't quite add up. Idk, I'm going to attach it just in case it could be useful. Just to clarify, this is absolutely speculation due to the dates not aligning.

Hi Sera,

I appreciate that Daniel wants to exercise caution. When Barb looked at the Boburka entry in the list of parishioners, she pointed out for this couple Wasyl and Maria that "The wedding date in column 2 matches the marriage record that was found and sent by the professional genealogist," specifically 30 May 1912. Seems pretty solid to me, but of course it would be great to have more info from the Lviv archive.

I see why you went looking for an Anastazja Locko since she is also mentioned in the wedding record that Daniel found for you. However, I don't think the record you have now found on Ancestry is the same Anastazja Locko. In this document, you see Anastasia Locko listed as the mother to a woman named Maria who was born in 1944. In the marriage record, Anastazja Locko was listed as the mother to a woman named Maria who was born in 1898. As you said, having the dates not line up gives a question mark to this record being connected to your family.

Sending you best wishes for a wonderful Easter holiday, perhaps after that we will reconnect with more records to look at.
Sophia

Jarockzo vs Jacejka, etc. mean anything or if some names got lost in translation. I will update once I hear back from her.

Thanks for reading!

Sophia, the link you posted on March 12th contains a lot of important information. The wedding date in column 2 matches the marriage record that was found and sent by the professional genealogist. I do not see the child’s name Mieczyslaw, nor anything about the surname Orawski.
-Barb

Thank you, Barb. That does make it appear that this is not Mieczyslaw Orawski's family. It is from the 1928 church book (although of course added to over the years) and so 7-year-old Mieczyslaw should show up with his family. It raises the possibility that there was more than one Maria Jacejko in Butla/Bitlia, one who married a Wasyl/Basil Orawski and another that married a Wasyl/Basil Boburka. It would be so helpful to see the 1921 birth records, which may be the best way of sorting this out. I wish they were online.

Sera, so far the only document that suggests your Mieczyslaw had two surnames is the Arolsen records. It may be wise to wait and see what is in those files. One additional comment for you, regarding surnames. I had earlier pointed out the possibility that the surname Orawski might be derived from a place called Orawa not far from Butla/Bitlia (I had posted a map for you so you could see it). There is also a town which you can see near Lviv (on google maps, use the search term BIBRKA to find it) which in Polish was spelled Bóbrka. The pronunciation of that Polish town is almost identical to the pronunciation of Buburka. If you would like to compare the two sounds, follow this link and click on the icon for "listen" which you will find in the lower left side:

This is just a hypothesis, but I think it is possible that both of these surnames are derived from place names.

Hoping this puzzle will get resolved,
I posted this link (and image) on March 12th. Would you kindly have your professional look at it? It is from the list of parishioners from the Greek Catholic church in Butla/Bitlia. As I am uncertain in my ability to read the cyrillic, I would appreciate your genealogist's review of it. Is this, or is this not, the same couple you just posted the marriage record for? If so, it shows the names of their children, with birth dates and in many cases death dates also.

Here is the link again, they are on the right-hand page:

https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/3:1:3Q9M-CS9X-K9LL-9?cat=koha%3A2018419&i=763&lang=en

Is there a Mieczyslaw there? Is there any indication of a surname change to Orawski?

Thank you.
Sophia, that’s correct. I wrote it earlier, but perhaps not very precisely. The description of this microfilm states that it contains B/M/D from the villages of Butla and Butelka. However, when you open the pages, the birth records are missing. So yes. It seems these records exist, but I can't find them online.

Sera, should the genealogist who helped you with the marriage record also assist with further research in the parish of Butla? I can write an email to the archive in Lviv to ask whether it is possible to locate the birth record of Mieczysław (Michael/Mike) and perhaps find additional information. Would you like me to do that and place an order?
Barb, sorry I missed your last question--but if you can put in an order to see if the archive in Lviv has anything pertaining to Mike, that would be wonderful! How much is that? I can PayPal the amount.

Thanks so much for offering and your willingness to do so!

Sophia,

I am so glad that you replied this morning. I was actually going to private message you if you hadn't. I have been overwhelmed with work, but yesterday I spent hours going through all of our findings.

I went through our entire search thread and re-read everything. I was going to reply to a few posts in particular, but wanted to have all my ducks in a row. I don't have too much time today, but will check the forum periodically and if I can reply/post, I will.

I just wanted to let you know though, I sent a screenshot of your reply and copied the link and sent it to the Genealogist. I also sent him the link to this page and asked him if he would look at all of the documents/conversations posted in this thread to review all of the information that you, Trish, and Barb have been able to gather. I'm fairly certain he will do this for us. I just sent the email to him though, so I will update once he replies to let me know if he is able to make connections between the resources y'all have gathered and Aline's family.

I also wanted to let you know that he did translate the marriage records of Wasyl & Maria--see below his translation:

Translation:
Column 1: Date of the marriage - May 30, 1912
Column 2: House number - 66
Column 3: Groom - Wasyl Boburka, son of Michał and Anastazja née Niegir, farmers in Hnyla
Column 4: Religion - Greek Catholic
Column 5: Religion/Or other ----------------------------
Column 6: Marital status - bachelor
Column 7: Age/Date of birth - 28 years old born December 26 1884
Column 8: -------------------------------------------
Column 9: Bride - Maria Jacejko, daughter of Jan and Anastazja née Łocko, farmers in Bitlia
Column 10: Religion - Greek Catholic
Column 11: Religion/Or other -----------------------------
Column 12: Marital status - single
Column 13: Age/Date of birth - 14 years old born on 11 April 1898
Column 14: --------------------------------------------
Column 15: Witnesses - Andrzej Orawski, Michał Boburka

Notes:
Hnyla is currently known as Karpatske: Karpatske - Wikipedia

Also wanted to mention that with the name change from Boburka to Orawski is a mystery. Here is what Daniel (the Genealogist said about that:

"Fortunately, you mentioned the surname Boburka earlier - otherwise, we would never have found this! Interestingly, one of the witnesses at this wedding was Andrzej Orawski. The change of surname by your husband’s grandmother’s father from Boburka to Orawski still remains a mystery. Of course, the surname Orawski sounds more distinguished and noble, unlike the more common, peasant surname Boburka."

I believe that I already posted this when posting Wasyl & Maria's marriage records, however once Daniel said this, I asked back, "Do you know if Boburka could have been a variant or "peasant" name of Orawski?"

This was Daniel's reply, "Probably not - your husband’s great grandfather most likely changed his surname because he didn’t like his original one."

If I missed any other questions that you, Trish, or Barb need answered, please let me know and I will work on gathering that info.

Hopefully Daniel is able to look at all of the resources that you ladies have provided fairly soon so we can narrow down more info.

Thanks for everything!

-Barb

Hi everyone! Sorry I missed this Barb. The genealogist actually wrote me today! He found Mike's parent's marriage records! I'm going to attach the document he sent. Let me know if you are unable to see it. Here is what he said regarding finding more information for now, "I have identified the place of origin of your husband’s grandmother’s father, that is, your husband’s great grandfather. Thanks to my contacts in Ukraine, I was able to obtain the marriage record of his parents. The document was written in Cyrillic.

Further research is not possible at this time, as the records from this parish have not been digitized, and the room where the materials are made available is currently under renovation. Additionally, a few days ago, a Russian drone fell near this archive, which will likely delay its reopening."

So I'm unsure how much more he can do to find anything else at this time. Also the marriage record is written in Cyrillic. He said he will translate it within 5 days. So if anyone reads Cyrillic, that would be helpful.

Also this is what he said in the email that he sent with the records...this could be helpful.

"thank you for the transfer - I have received it.

Please find the marriage record attached. The marriage was solemnized in the Greek Catholic church in Bitlia:

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bitlia

Fortunately, you mentioned the surname Boburka earlier - otherwise, we would never have found this! Interestingly, one of the witnesses at this wedding was Andrzej Orawski. The change of surname by your husband’s grandmother’s father from Boburka to Orawski still remains a mystery. Of course, the surname Orawski sounds more distinguished and noble, unlike the more common, peasant surname Boburka.
Please wait for the translation."

I am so excited to see what we can come up with. Thank you all![/img]
I hope that your professional genealogist is able to obtain access to the jpg files that I mentioned yesterday with the 1921 birth records. To me it is clear that they exist but have not been uploaded to the internet. Maybe he has connections with someone who can open them.

Good luck! And do let us know if he succeeds.
Hi Everyone,

I'm sohappy to see the marriage record. It's also great that Sophia was able to give you so much information about the record. It's also good to see how all the surnames are connecting.

Just to make one comment. Going by Aline's DNA, the surnames Buburka and Tiazkun could connect with Aline's 2nd great-grandparents. This would be if they are 3rd cousins. They would share the same 2nd great-grandparents. So far we know Aline's grandparents names. If we could find something on Bazyli Orawski and Maria Jacejka that would be a big help.

Seruca, Did Mike Orawski have any siblings that you know of?

Barb, sad to hear about missing records. Maybe Mike (Mieczyslaw) had siblings.

Hi Trish,

I agree with you. I believe Aline is related to the Tiazkun's mentioned earlier and the other cousin that she shares 3% DNA with are related by their 2nd or 3rd great grandparents. I really believe they are more related by 2nd great grands because it seems there are a lot of half siblings when researching, which would dilute the DNA shared with Aline. If Mike's family had come from the U.K., I would be able to trace it back in no time, but again because of the lack of documents we have, and the documents that we are able to find being in other languages, it's so much harder to trace!

Mike did have one sister that he spoke about. I mentioned her in my initial post, however there is no identifying information that we have on her right now. Mike didn't talk much about his life in Poland/Ukraine. He traveled to Poland in the 90's/early 2000s and found her, but we don't even have her name to go off of. I forgot to mention that when I requested for the Polish Genealogist to research more into Mike's parents after discovering the marriage record, I also asked him to try and find information about Mike's sister as well. So I'm hoping we get a big break in the "case" and be able to find more about them and their story.
P.S. Your title for this thread includes the surname Jarockzo, which I don't think you have ever mentioned in our discussion. Now I am wondering if it is someone's mis-reading of the name Jacejko. Your thoughts?

Hi Sophia,

Thank you for sharing! I will look into this ASAP! For more context, Aline shares 3% DNA with a woman who is projected to be her second cousin on Aline's paternal side. I reached out to her and she stated she didn't know anything about her Father's side of her family, so I am under the assumption that her Father and Mike are related somehow. She did some research and started a small family tree for her Father's side. I believe she had some help and was able to uncover some things regarding her family, however I'm not sure just how reliable the information is that she provided. In her small family tree, the surnames are Jarockzo and Ciko.

Due to the fact that out of all of Aline's DNA matches, this woman shares the most DNA with her, I went with it and started researching the Jarockzo name as well as the others we have mentioned. Since last names change so much over time, I now have a hunch that the Jacejko could be a variant of Jarockzo or could have been lost in translation over time. As I mentioned before, I have done research for others to help them find their ancestors, but all of them were primarily from the U.K., which is a lot easier to find than Polish Heritage because of the wars and destruction of records, villages, citizens, museums, culture, etc. It also doesn't help that I only speak/read English, so I don't really know if the records I come across have any meaning. So far, I have found some records that I thought could be important and sent them to the Polish Genealogist for translation and nothing has been of importance.

Wanted to update and let y'all (I'm from Alabama, so excuse my "southernisms" lol) know that I requested that he look further into Mike's parents as well as requested that he research more into Mike's stay in the Mauthausen Concentration Camp, but that's more out of curiosity. Of course this can take some time, but I will update once I get that information.

Thanks again for all of your research!

I also found some material from Butla. The description indicates births/marriages/deaths for the years 1921–1926, but in reality it only contains marriages and deaths, and no births. This is unfortunate, as 1921 would be particularly interesting for us. I can see the surnames Boburka and Orawski.
-Barb

Hi Barb,

I took a good look at this. The bad news is that we cannot see the births for 1921. The good news is (in my opinion), the scans of the births exist. They simply have not been uploaded. I will attach here two screenshots to explain why I think this is true.

As you can tell, this set of images consists of 56 scans. Each one is a .jpg file and the .jpg file names are shown in the lower left corner of each scan. When you start with the very first scan, it is 1_298_0_0_303_0001 and when you look at the very last scan, it is 1_298_0_0_303_0120. So, there should be 120 scans, not 56.

Now, take a look at my screenshots. You see they jump from scan 3 which is .0003 to scan 4 which is .0012, so right there you are missing 9 jpg's. I believe that those are the births for 1921.

Let me know if I need to explain this any differently, or if you see what I am trying to say.

Thanks,
Here is a link to the page where that record is found:
https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/3:1:3Q9M-CS9X-K92Y-H?cat=koha%3A2018419&i=692&lang=en
P.S. Your title for this thread includes the surname Jarockzo, which I don't think you have ever mentioned in our discussion. Now I am wondering if it is someone's mis-reading of the name Jacejko. Your thoughts?

                                      Hi Sera,

Successfully uploaded! Thanks.

So, I see that Mike's name really was Mieczyslaw, which I was not expecting (I thought he would be Michal) so that is very useful to know. His father's name is written as "Vaseyle" (in Polish, Bazyli) (in English, Basil). It looks like his mother was Maria Jacejka (in Polish, the surname Jacejko is used for males and Jacejka for females). And there is that spelling of "Bitlap" again for his place of birth. No mention of any Boburka/Buburka connection in this document.

Mike's birth date is given as November 11, 1921 and he was 24 years old when he married.

All good info!
