I have also tried Geneteka over the years, without finding any good leads. I was hoping the town Tosica (which I just recently saw on that document) might be a clue. I have not yet tried to search on Łosice. The earlier manifests that were posted (and removed) were not my family. I have not successfully found a manifest. The name is just too common, with too many similar variations to be sure of anything.

I know so much more now than I ever did when my father was alive. He always said his parents came from Poland. I assumed together. I later learned they met in the US. My grandmother had many siblings and with enough clues, I found that whole family in the Poznan Marriage Index and then the scanned films on Family Search and in the actual microfilms at the LDS churches; then Geneteka to verify when that came about. But the grandfather remains a mystery.

His children obtained birth records from PA in their adulthood , using other records to verify themselves as no birth records were recorded initially. 3 of those children all listed Warszawa as where their father was born. The fourth child died when he was 38 and did not register a birth certificate, as this was about 8-9 years before his older siblings did theirs.

Hi Dave,

I hope you receiived my email on how to obtain baptismal records for Rose, Alexander, and Stanley. I also hope you saw the information I sent on Stanley. If not, I can send it again. I would still try to see if there is a baptismal record for the children. My father was in the same situation. He was born in 1931 and there wasn't a birh record for him. I think it was becasue he was a home birth. He had to use his baptismal record to get social security. The other interesing thing was we found out his brother (my uncle) was baptized the same day as my father. My uncle was 6 years older than my father. We found that very interesting of the double baptisms.

I wish you luck with your research.

Regards,
Dear Dave and Barb,

I apologize for posting the wrong information. I went through my posts and deleted the information for Antoni who was born on February 25, 1881 along with his brother, Edmund. This is not the correct Antoni. I deleted the inccorect information so that we don't get confused.

On a brighter note, I think I found the 1910 census for Antoni. Westmoreland County, Pennsylvania would be correct since this is the county where Antoni and Pearl (Pelegia) were married. The census also states Antoni came into the USA in 1909.
Dave also mentioned the Warszawa region as a possible place the family may have come from. In Mazowieckie, there is a place called Łosice. This is the closest I can find to the name “Tosica.”
Hi Trish and Dave,
From the beginning and the first post to Dave: I am unable to trace the place. I have never heard of a place called Tosica, which is why I asked about the 1903 or 1909 manifest.
I have searched for an Antoni Czajkowski / Czaykowski / Czaikowski, born between 1879 and 1884, on Genetyka without any success. The exact date from the Alien Registration Card is not necessarily correct, as we have seen in several other cases.
If the first manifest posted by Trish is the correct one, I can see two places mentioned there: Bromberg (now Bydgoszcz) and Montwy (now Mątwy), which is now part of the city of Inowrocław. Both are located in Kujawsko-Pomorskie, about 40 km apart. I still cannot find any place called Tosica nearby.
In the Declaration for Naturalization, Edmund states that he is from Kruschwitz (now Kruszwica), a town located 17 km from Inowrocław.
The person mentioned in the 1910 manifest and the WWI Draft Card is the same (same occupation and date of birth).
It is difficult for me to believe that Andy Shizak and Antoni Czajkowski are the same person, but as mentioned earlier, we have seen many unexpected things before.
I will try to see if Aleksander / Julia / Jozefine Czajkowski can lead me further.
Trish, are you able to find Edmund’s manifest? It could confirm whether his place of origin is the same as Antoni’s.

Here are a few other documents that show various spellings of his name.

What I would really like to obtain is the original town (Tosica ?) so that we would have a chance at the online archives.
I have also seen Warszawa listed, but I could not quickly find that document today. But, did he mean the city, or somewhere near there?

His WWI and WWII do not give clues as to where he was from.

One last clue- my father always told us that the name was pronounced like the composer Tchaikovsky. So doing searches for Anton/Antoni Czajkowski (allowing for spelling variations) is a bit like searching for a John Smith in the US. It is a very common name

Thanks for any help you could provide.

Thanks all for the responses. I do have other documents. His name became Andy Shizak, and under that name I have WW1 and WW2 cards, all the censuses, city directories and his death. He lived in Mt Braddock PA and then Star City/Morgantown WV.

Really stuck on the Polish origins. He used Antoni Cajkoski when he bought property and his will had both old and new names. His marraige license had Alexander as his father- spelled Caikoski then with mother as Julia (no maiden name) His SS application also had his father as Alexander. But here is mother is Josephine Basistsky.

Birth seems to be Aug 6 1881, but have seen Sept 6 1881 as well. To my knowledge, we have not located any brothers.

Unable to post additional documents right now, but wanted to provide more context.

Or something that could sound like it?
Attached is my grandfather's Alien Registration Card from the WWII time frame. I just obtained this document and this is the first document I have found where he mentioned a town. A couple of his kids, my father included, listed Warszawa on a couple of their documents when asked about father's place of birth. So- perhaps in that general area?

Would love to be able to locate Antoni's birth record if I could locate this town.

thanks
Dave,

Do you have records from the USA on your grandfather such as his death record. census records, baptismal records of his children? All these records could have clues on them.

Was he always in West Virginia? I'm having trouble finding records on him.

Regards,
That manifest is likely. The destination seems to be Johnstown PA which is about 65 km from where he would be in 1912
