With Sophie's book, I've been able to connect some dots. There was a lot of construction in Kalisz in the 1870's, with the Treasury building and Orthodox Church
((8 Sierp.), Poświęcenie nowej cerkwi pra- wosławnej SS. Piotra i Pawła przez Leoncju- sza Arcybiskupa prawosł. warszawskiego i nowogieorgiewskiego.
1877 (August Consecration of the new Orthodox Church of Saints Peter and Paul by Leontius, Orthodox Archbishop of Warsaw and Novogeorgievsk. p.84)
The 1825 map printed in 1878 offers a snapshot of the city as a before image. If you look at the Catholic Church #1, and follow down the street, you'll see numbers 19, 18, and 37. #18 looks like where Adam and Anna married in 1870. "Greeks held their services—starting in 1835—in a chapel that had been converted from a weapons hall within the former Cadet Corps complex." p.104
Below 37 is #36. "36 Properties of the Municipal Treasury." I don't see a treasury building, but I would guess it is here.

Barb, Do you remember the database at familysearch where you found Olga's and Michał's birth documents? I'd like to see if they have the civil version of Adam and Anna's wedding. Hopefully it will have where they lived, like Maryanna's and Anna and Wojciech's. I've looked but can't find anything.
I found some new ones for the Gołownia's I added to MyH. I haven't added them to Ancestry yet. If you can't see them, let me know.
Take care,
Sorry I didn't reply sooner, but it's been a couple of hectic days.
Hopefully, this is an accurate translation of what Sophie posted:
"The Treasury Chamber.
Until 1818, the Collegiate priests possessed their own small houses—or *curiae*—which stretched in a long row across the entirety of what is today St. Joseph’s Square, extending diagonally toward Marjańska Street. As a portion of these *curiae* had been destroyed in the fire of 1792, the priests were left without adequate living quarters; consequently, around the year 1800, the Prussian government constructed a small townhouse for them—a structure that still stands today, facing the church. In 1818, Emperor Alexander I—seeking to eliminate the unsightly view of the dilapidated, leaning *curiae* and to open up the square—ordered their demolition and the construction of more suitable accommodations for the priests. In compliance with this decree, a connecting wing was erected on the site of the demolished dormitory, linking it with the small townhouse built during the Prussian era. In 1866, this edifice was requisitioned to house the offices of the Treasury Chamber; in 1873, it underwent extensive renovation, leaving the Collegiate priests with barely a meager ground-floor space for their use."
This is from the building link I posted: "1820 Treasury Directorate
Drawing of the new Directorate Building for Furs and Consumables to be constructed at Kalisch."
It's a little too big to post here.
Kevin
It's fascinating the tax office was above where the priests lived, as I think that's how Anna got hired. She and baby Marianna left Kakawa I think with the help of the village priest for the city.
Sophie's book looks interesting and I hope I can find more background information.
Thanks to both of you for your help.

                                      Hi,
I think you may be right. The map from 1828 may have been the basis for this later color version. According to information I found online, the tax office in Kalisz was established in 1867.

"Plac" of St. Joseph in Kalisz still exists and is one of the most important squares in the city. It is a historic square in the center of Kalisz. It was established in 1818, and the name “Plac św. Józefa” (St. Joseph’s Square) was given to it in 1875.
The Russian church, that is, the Orthodox Church of St. Peter and St. Paul, was built in the second half of the 19th century, during the period of the Russian partition of Poland (around 1870–1873). It was constructed by the tsarist authorities for the Russian garrison and administration. It stood near what is now "Plac św. Józefa" in Kalisz.
Barb, the colored map looks to be a copy of the 1825 map. This doesn't have the Russian Church in the Plaza. I think that was built in 1877. I wonder if the a tax office was, also?

I think that's the tax office next to the Orthodox Church. (from 1914)
https://polska-org.pl/7635264,foto.html?idEntity=7635263
That was a live-in job, with rooms on the 3rd floor. Hi,
Here is a brief explanation while you wait for the translation.

Use this link:
https://polona.pl/item-view/5492dcbd-8a09-40a1-b61f-a7ee200a784d?page=0
It is a color-coded map.

I have created a draft based on this map. On the map, brick buildings used for public services are marked in dark pink, for example the tax office, the town hall, and the theatre.
In the center of the map, you will find the town hall (RATUSZ) as no. 16 (see the legend at the bottom right). The tax office (IZBA SKARBOWA), no. 1 is located by Plac św. Józefa (see red arrow).
I have also attached a draft based on the map you provided.

Regards,
It's been a while since I've posted, and I hope everyone is doing well.
I have a question about my ancestor Mateusz Winkler, who married Maryanna Borowska in Kalisz in 1886. He lived "in Kalisz in the house under number 1.."
Here's a link if anyone is interested: https://www.szukajwarchiwach.gov.pl/skan/-/skan/0b5e220ae7c25c8deaed8e35fe2d025d1c455d2b5f15d3ab018539b5af231867

I found a map of Kalisz dated 1878. Here's a link, as it's too big for here: https://polska-org.pl/7791773,foto.html
I was hoping someone might be able to find number 1 on the map. Maryanna and her mother Anna lived "in the building of the Kalisz Department of Finance," which is X on the map, right between the Catholic and Orthodox Churches.

Mateusz was a wheelwright if that helps.

Take care,

I am working on it.
