Hi everyone,

What I read in the document is:

Heinrich Kommont was born on 21 March at 4 o’clock a.m. and baptized the same day. [According to the column header the year was 1883, but there are entries from different years in this column.] His entry has no. 31. The parents were Kommont Friedrich et ux [and his wife] Caroline nee Lange, b. luth. [both of Lutheran Confession]. On this page three persons are named who performed the baptisms: Lack, Fesske and pastor Wasem. Pastor Wasem approved the baptisms of the other two persons, too. Heinrich was baptized by Lack in Ludmilewka, this was approved by pastor Wasem.

Hope this helps,
Michael

Hi Michael,

Thank you for the translation. It clears up a few points for me, especially regarding who actually performed the christening. Also, I had been able to read "Caroline geb. Lange" but I was not able to read "b. luth" which shows up for most (if not all) of the parents on that page so thanks for clarifying that.

Regarding the year, it is a bit of a puzzle. For the three children baptized in Ludmilowka, two of them clearly state 1882 but for Heinrich it does not give a year. I might interpret that as meaning he was also baptized in 1882, since his name is listed in the middle of the other two children. Or I might interpret that as meaning that he was baptized in 1883 since that is how the column is labelled. Or I might interpret it as meaning no one remembered which year it was (OK, maybe this third option is not very likely).

This will all be very happy news for Gay, who did not know Caroline's maiden name.

Another interesting point for me is that no siblings of Heinrich show up in the Rootsweb index.

All the best,
Ludmilowka is also in the list of villages that were part of Zhytomyr parish on that link I had provided to the SGGEE, which for convenience I will add again here (note that it also gives the names of all of the pastors over the years):
It would be very helpful if Michael could review this document.
Hi everyone,

I've found his baptism, thanks to an index by rootsweb. I should add that the image (which I have added below) is from one of the films that is found in the Family Search link that Barb provided earlier for the metrical books of 1843-1885, Evangelical Lutheran Church, Zhitomir.

Not sure why I am not getting a link directly to the page I want, but follow this link and then go to image #610. You will find him on line 31.

https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/3:1:S3HY-6P9S-753?cat=koha%3A1407428&view=explore&lang=en&groupId=M9SQ-4PN

His birth date as shown by rootsweb's index is 21 March 1882. Here is the rootsweb link:
Hello Trish, Barb and Sophia !
What a treat it is to wake up and have a message from you! I believed I had everything available since Henry immigrated but I had not seen that article before - one that gives a third birth date and states Zhitomer as his birth place. 23 March 1882, 12 March 1885 and 22 March 1885. As well, I did not know to look for Komond. The author of this article is Henry and Emma's seventh child, it may be from a local community history book and I may have a source for that. I have all children, etc. I was able to get a clear copy of Henry's arrival document, Henry did go directly to Alberta. The Winnipeg connection is an organization there that assisted immigrants. My interest now shifts to the Zhitomor records. I recently made a post about the Henschel / Henschell family and they, too, had connections to Zhitomor.
Thank you so much for all of your help, I am so grateful for it.
Cheers, Gay
Trish, the document you posted is a record from the Holland America Line showing the purchase of a ticket and the crucial details of the name of the ship (the Samland) and its date of sailing (departure 10 April 1911). The arrival manifest is on the website of the government of Canada, here:

https://central.bac-lac.gc.ca/.redirect?app=paslisandborent&id=4580230&lang=eng&ecopy=e003897601

However, I am having a terrible time getting it to show up on my computer screen with sufficient resolution to be able to read it. What I can say is this: this incoming passenger list indexes him as "Heinrich Kornond." He is the last passenger on that page. It shows him as 26 years old, from Russia (the form does not ask for a city or town), and it says he is a farm laborer. He was headed to Winnipeg, Manitoba as you already know from what Trish posted. The very last column asks for religion. Scanning down the page, you can see some are "r. cath." (roman catholic), some "gr. cath." and others "greek" (both mean greek catholic). It is difficult to decipher for Heinrich, but given Barb's earlier comment, it may very well say "evang." for evangelical.

Sophia

I finally found the manifest you provided above. I hope this is a better copy.
Found this great article about Heinrich and Emma. This is the best picture I can get of the article. It states Heinrich's mother and step-father were already in Alberta.

Gay, do you know anything about Karolina and her second husband?
Regarding where vital records for Lesowszczyna may be, I hope Barb can help with that because I do not see them on Family Search.

If anyone has a subscription to some other genealogy website that will show the manifest for the Samland arriving in Canada in 1911, it would be nice to get a better image of this record.

Did he continue living in Manitoba? Or did he move to Saskatchewan or Alberta? I am not seeing the Family Search trees that you mentioned, Trish, and I am not seeing any records for him on the Manitoba vital records website.

Sophia

Hi Sophia, Barb, and Gay,

Sophia, I was only able to find the record for the ticket for the manifest. I'll keep looking to see if I find something.

This is the information from a tree on ancestry.com.

Heinrich Komant (Henry)
Birth 22 Mar 1885 • Lessovchesna, Wolhynia, Poland
Death 24 Jul 1948 • Ardrossan, Alberta, Canada

Married: 2 Nov 1914 • Strathcona, Alberta, Canada

Spouse:
Emma Busenius
Birth 19 Mar 1896 • Volyn', Ukraine
Death 12 Feb 1975 • Kelowna, British Columbia

Please note that per Heinrich's obituary, he had 6 sons and 6 daughters. I can post the obituary if anyone needs to see it.

Here is the link to the family tree on family search.

Comment: I did not get any notifications that there was information posted to this thread.
Thanks, Barb. I see this on the website for the Society for German Genealogy in Eastern Europe (sggee.org):

https://www.sggee.org/research/parishes/parish_histories/VolhyniaDiocese/ZhitomirParish/ZhitomirHist.html

It includes "Lesowtschisna" along with alternative spellings.
Hello everyone,

As mentioned earlier, I believe they were Evangelicals. I searched and searched, but I couldn’t find anything for Lesowszczyzna (Ukrainian: Лісівщина). Zhytomyr is about 20 km from that place, and I assume that was the nearest parish. I checked the year 1885 yesterday, but I didn’t find him. That doesn’t mean he isn’t there. I have observed many very late baptisms in 1885 (ranging from a few weeks old to several years old). It is possible that Henrich Albert appears in later years. I used this link:
Hi Gay, Trish and Barb,

Regarding where vital records for Lesowszczyna may be, I hope Barb can help with that because I do not see them on Family Search.

Hello Barb, Sophia and Trish,
I'm not quite sure if I am replying in the correct space.

Thank you so, so much for your help, I am delighted to have a response and especially with new information for me.
The death certificate is the only document I have for this man, the birth place recorded is a very complicated word for me and as mentioned was likely written phonetically.
I have since noticed the death certificate records the birth date as 23 March 1882, it was other family information that show it as 12 March 1885.
Would BMD records for the years 1880 - 1885 for Lesowszczyzna be online ? Though I don't speak, read either Polish or German I can recognize names and places in the records. And I'm especially pleased when I see 'geb'.
Again, thank you so much for your assistance.
Cheers, Gay

It seems the Heinrich went to Canada. Heinrich was married in Canada in 1914. Only a marriage index is available. HeHeinrich died in Canada. Only an index is available. There are several trees online all with the same information.
Hi Barb,

Thanks! I much prefer people with actual intelligence to machines with artificial intelligence.

You will be interested to know that when I received the email just now from Polish Origins telling me there was a reply to my post this morning, and I clicked on the link it provided, it gave me an error message that said the message did not exist. And yet your reply to me is obviously here. I wonder if it happens this when, when you post a reply but later edit it? Or maybe you posted a reply, thought about it, deleted it and posted a new one?

How odd.
