Hi Gail,

There is no house number issue. The groom was born & raised and lived with his first wife in house # 101. His second wife would have resided with him in house #101 after the wedding. Here follows a translation of the entry.

# of marriage for the year: 6
Date of Marriage: May 16, 1876

The Groom: The industrious* Józef Bodnar, the legitimate son of the late Antoni and Katarzyna née Roblawska (sp?), farmers in Piata house #101, born and residing there, a farmer, a widower surviving the late Agata Ramek(?) from Piata , 44 years of age, of the Catholic religion.
Following Columns:
Latin Rite Catholic
44 years of age
a widower

The Bride: The industrious* Antonina the legitimate daughter of the late Tomasz Terlecki and Rozalia née Izdebska(?) farmers from Piata house #5, born and residing there, a maiden 24 years of age, of the Greek Catholic religion.

Greek Rite Catholic
A maiden
24 years of age

The Witnesses: Jan Tawkacz & Kazimierz Terlecki, farmeres from Piata.

Note: *laboriosus/industrious was an adjective used to describe an individual as a peasant.

Some tidbits...Don’t credit the priest with attractive handwriting (and don’t blame him for errors and/or poor handwriting. The priest did not write the entry. This was a civil record mandated by the Austrian government and priests hired scribes to do the tedious task of making copies for the various places to which the records were to be sent. The parish priest took notes when the baptism was being arranged and the hired scribe wrote the final copies from those notes.

Note that some information is repeated in more than one part of the record.

At times I don’t respond quickly to requests for translations. My priorities have changed since I first began to do translations from Latin over a decade ago. My bucket list now concentrates on completing the ancestral narratives for my youngest grand niece and nephew. When I began to do genealogical research I never bothered to translate Latin and Polish documents. There was no need to do so since I am able to read those docs as well and as easily as if they were in English. However, I am now in the process of translating the records since others in my family cannot read those languages.

I have no ancestors from Galicia so my personal interest is in Kujawsko-Pomorskie and Wielkopolskie where my ancestors lived since at least the late 1600s. If you noticed a post on the forum from June 5 of this year regarding a book “Our Polish Ancestors” which is available on Amazon https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0G2GN43RH It is available in both print and on Kindle. I got the Kindle version for have the cost of the print version. I’m not hawking the book but in my opinion a better title would be “Our Polish Ancestors from Galicia” since that is the main area covered in the book. I read it while eating breakfast and can honestly say that I have learned nothing new but I will finish it due to my long standing decision to read any book I purchased. This decision dates back to the early 1960s. There was a flick on TV staring William Bendix based on the book by John Henry Dana entitled “Two Years Before the Mast” which describes a journey from the East Coast to California and back. I liked the flick and bought the book which I found extremely boring but I had to read it since I did spend my hard earned cash (35 cents) to purchase the book. Long story short it took about as long to read the book in fits and starts as it did for Dana to complete the journey. One error I noticed thus far was the statement that there were four banns for marriage. Three was the real magic number. I mention the Ancestors book simply because anyone whose ancestors were from Galicia would likely find it worthwhile.

Hi Sophia! Thanks for the quick reply - no, not the 7th column with his age - the verbiage in the 3rd column about 3/4 down - it looks like the words annorum 44?

Hi Gail,

In the record you attached, I see the number 44 as the age of the groom and not as a house number. You do mean that 7th column, right? I can't see the column headings but I think we are looking at how old the groom was.

Thanks Dave - I always learn something new from you! As to going to the beach, we back on to Lake Ontario and have never been brave enough to dive in! Further, getting old(er) presents new challenges we did not foresee! One last translation please - I have been attempting to resolve a house number issue, so am wondering that house #44 has to do with his domicile house #101?

Age 27 years
Cause of Death: Enteritis****

Notes: *Dominus is best translated as the Polish title Pan.
**The adjective politicus, a, um means political/concerned with civil government
***The noun dominium, dominii, neuter means dominion/rule
**** Enteritis was and still is the medical term for an infection of the small intestine which usually is caused by bacterial or viral infections from contaminated food and water. The usual symptoms include include abdominal pain, diarrhea, nausea, vomiting, and loss of appetite. The common term for this disease is “food poisoning”.

Another not good beach cold & rain. My wife and I used to do a lot of beach days but now not so many. I suppose age & the beach could be added to the charges against old age Cicero listed in his treatise “De Senectute” (Concerning Old Age).

I have had the pleasure of swimming in all five of the Great Lakes but my favorite beaches are those of the Indiana Dunes National Park, formerly The Indiana Dunes National Lake Shore, which begins in westernmost Michigan City. Probably my least favorite dip was in Lake Superior’s Pancake Bay Ontario in mid-August when the water temperature was a “refreshing” 45 degrees Fahrenheit (7.2 Celsius).

Hi Gail,

Here is the groom’s entry: Jan Kowal, a guard of the prisoners (those incarcerated) of the city, born in Sambor, son of the late Antoni and Katarzyna née Miklewicvz.
(He was a guard at either the city jail or city prison, if it had a prison.)

Since yesterday was the summer solstice as an added bonus here is the bride’s entry: Seweryna Baczynska, a servant, born in Lwów (currently Lviv, Ukraine), a daughter of the late Julia Baczynska, a single woman.

The lines which follow deal with legalities.

Too bad that yesterday, Fathers’ Day, was not a good beach day here. It rained most of the day and the temp was in the 60s.
