It is quite easy to check these parish records. I would focus on the birth records. At that time, it was rare for a woman to be a witness at a wedding.

Hello Barb,

Marcin's first wife, Agnieszka, had seven children, actually. I have the birth and death records for all of them, apart from Katarzyna, whose marriage and death records remain at large, as I've said.

What you suggest may be correct--that she, like four of her siblings (Jozef, Michal, Aniela and Jan), may have emigrated. But I have not found any passenger list for her name that seemed convincing.

However, you mentioned something that I did not know: "In 1920, Aniela was living in Giedlarowa. She had two children born out of wedlock, in 1920 and 1923. Both died as young children. She was living in the family home."

Please tell me how you discovered this, and whether it is supportable with documents. I was unaware that Giedlarowa birth records after 1913 are available to the public.

And to answer your question, I have not looked for Katarzyna Niemiec's name in births or marriage of other people (non--siblings) in Giedlarowa. Would that not be a huge task?

Hi Sophia & Michael,

I don't see any clear connecting points. Giedlarowa has been indexed, but I can find neither Katarzyna's marriage record nor her death record. Also note that although the birth indexes for Giedlarowa begin in 1871, neither Katarzyna nor her sisters, Maria (1873) and Anna (1877), are listed. In contrast, their siblings born in 1881, 1884, and 1887 are included. This shows that the indexes cannot be relied upon blindly.
It is quite common in the Podkarpackie region for there to be multiple sets of parish registers for the same parish—some covering the entire parish and others kept separately for individual villages. I believe this is the reason why we cannot see all of the records.

Marcin and his first wife, Agnieszka, had six children, but four of them died in childhood. He also had six children with his second wife, Regina.

In 1920, Aniela was living in Giedlarowa. She had two children born out of wedlock, in 1920 and 1923. Both died as young children. She was living in the family home. Since most of Katarzyna's siblings emigrated, it will not be easy to find them as witnesses at a marriage or as godparents at a baptism. Have you checked those records?

I have translated the entire 8-page document concerning Marcin's final wishes (so no further work in that area is needed), but it did not provide Katarzyna's marriage name (if she had one) or her current residence. As for the information that I provided concerning Marcin and his children, it is correct. Marcin Niemiec was the deceased, and his chief beneficiaries were his youngest children Jan and daughter Aniela, although his eldest children Katarzyna and Michał received nominal sums. I have Katarzyna's birth/baptism record, and can attach it here, but it doesn't provide any information regarding her later marriage or death, etc.
Hi Michael,

Thanks for posting Katarzyna's record. I had hoped it would have had a notation regarding her subsequent marriage or death, but sadly not, as you said.

Since you have a translation for the entire document, can you tell me what it says at the very top of the third page? I can see the word "jesli" ("if") but what is the verb after that? Zaradaja? I'm not getting it.

If I do find anything on Katarzyna, I will post it. Since Michał had emigrated prior to Marcin's death and yet still received some money, perhaps the same was true for her.

Katarzyna Niemiec was born in Giedlarowa, Podkarpackie (formerly, Austrian Galicia) on 12 October 1874. She was the eldest child of Marcin Niemiec and Agnieszka Niemiec. Despite the existence of Katarzyna's Giedlarowa birth/baptismal record, she doesn't appear in any online Giedlarowa marriage and death records. However, she was named as a beneficiary in the Leżajsk Protokół (10 Jan 1922) to determine the final wishes of her father Marcin, who died in 1920 without leaving a written will. This suggests she was still alive in 1920, if not in 1922.

Can anyone help me locate her?

Katarzyna's younger half-sibling Józef emigrated to Pennsylvania in 1901; sibling Michał emigrated to New York in 1909; half-siblings Jan and Aniela emigrated to France in the 1920s, although Aniela eventually returned to Giedlarowa. I don't know what happened to her half-sibling Antoni Niemiec (born 1896).

Thanks for any help.

Hi Mike,

I found your conversation on the forum from 2020 where you asked for a translation of the final wishes of Marcin. For the translation, you had posted three images of that document. I could not find whether you received a translation of the third piece. I will copy the second and third pieces of it here and patch them together:

2nd witness

1.

Generally: Ignacy Miś, 40 years old, farmer from Giedlarowa, not a relative, negative for the rest of the questions

2.

Questions: A few days before the death of the late Marcin Niemiec, son of Jakub, his son Jan asked me to visit his ill father, who wanted to say his last will, in case of his death. When i got there, Michał Gut was already there, and later came Jan Kuczek. The deceased was lying in the bed. He was physically weak, byt fully mentally conscious.
When all three of us got together: me, Michał Gut and Jan Kuczek, the deceased declared that he wanted to say his last will and he asked Us to be the witnesses of his will.
Then, he testified, in the presence of the three of us, not persuaded and not coerced by anyone, that in case of his death, he disposes of his assets and liabilities, as follows:

1. he gives 3 staja's* of the ground, from the side of Jasieniec, to his daughter Aniela,
2. he gives the rest of his grounds and the parcel with the cottage standing on it, to his son Jan, under condition that he will repay 150 Rhenish zloty (which is 300 krones) to somebody that the declarant doesn't know and 10 (20 krones) to each of his siblings, who are the children of the deceased Jan: Michał and Katarzyn.....

It all depends on the grammar, so I am hoping that Barb may join this conversation, because I cannot say for sure how it is expressed in Polish, but as I read it in English, I do not see Katarzyna being listed as Marcin's daughter. I am seeing Katarzyna being listed as Marcin's sibling but it is confusing because it says she is a child of the deceased Jan. The relevant sentence is in the second page, and it includes a form of the word "swoj" which can mean "his," "hers," "your," etc. it all depends on who is the subject of the sentence. Certainly here it means "his siblings" but which "he" does that refer to? Marcin or Jan?

I did try to look for Katarzyna's birth record which you mentioned, but I could not find it in the Giedlarowa records. Can you post her baptism record?
