Thanks for clarifying that "Załuczne #76" referred to the house number. I misinterpreted it as a citation for the baptism record number for Aniela. Do you have any records at all for Aniela? Do you know what became of her?

Hello, Sophia, Thank you for your response. I will be looking into the information you have provided. I have found a number of brith, marriage and death records in the 1890 to 1945 records for Załuczne. For example, the 1894 death of Jan Masnica, the father of Marcin Masnica; and, the 1896 marriage record of Tomasz Waligora and Sabina Masnica. I Knew Uncle Tomasz in the early 1950s. He lived a farm in Sobieski, Wisconsin with my Greatgrandparents, Wincenty Kaleciak and Aniela Masnica. She is a niece of the other Aniela and daughter of Marcin. I also have church records for the family in Chicago and Sobieski. It is very frustrating not to have the earlier records from Załuczne. When I first started my research I had Aunt Aniela born in 1867. Probably neither 1861 or 1867 is correct. I also started with Sabina Masnica as a sister of Marcin. But, it turns out she was the illegitimate daughter of Katarzyna Masnica, who had her baptized as Susana in the Slovakian RC Church in Orava, Slovakia in 1867 which was right across the border from Załuczne and now part of Nowy Targ, Poland. Hi Martin,

I looked at this a bit, and I understand why you have some doubt about the source of information for this entry you found for Aniela Masnica. It does not seem credible.

Let's look at this. First off, as you show in the subject line for your question, the village of Załuczne belonged to the church in Odrowąż Podhalański and not to the church in Nowy Targ. I looked on Geneteka, and as you probably know both the birth records and the death records include not only the town of the parish but also the town in which the family lived. Sorting through every entry for every baptism and death indexed for Nowy Targ, there is only one record where someone's place of residence was Załuczne and that was the death in 1919 of Wiktoria Janik (see screenshot, below).

Whose baptism actually was recorded in Nowy Targ, as the 76th baptism in 1861? Marianna Pajerska (see screenshot, below).

OK, so Aniela Masnica, according to the entry you found, was born in December, so maybe she wasn't baptized until 1862. Whose baptism was recorded in Nowy Targ, as the 76th baptism in 1862? Anna Suska (see screenshot, below).

So far, nothing supports this idea of Aniela Masnica being baptized in Nowy Targ and living in Załuczne.

Now, what records are actually available for Załuczne? Here is a link, showing what records are available for what years:

Note that this does not include the year 1861, for births, so it does not seem likely that the person posting that information had obtained a document from the archives or from the church.

If the entry you found for Aniela Masnica had only given her year of birth (and not the month and day) then I might be more generous and say that there is a possibility that the person who wrote that had found either a marriage record for her or a death record for her that gave her age, and from that they deduced that she was born in 1861. However, since they are providing the actual month and day, this seems to be a less likely scenario.

In summary: I don't think this is a valid source citation for the birth date of Aniela Masnica.

On another but related topic, I see you posted on the TYLKA thread:
I was researching my Great Great Grandfather, Martin (Marcin)Masnica. I found a Jan Tylka in a 24 Mar 1909 New York Arrival Passenger List. He listed his home as Załuczne, Austria, Galicia. The person he left back in Załuczne was his wife, Antonina. He was to be met by Marcin Masnica and Jan was going to his address in Chicago, Illinois. Martin was born in the village. Martin later moved to a farm in Sobieski, Oconto, Wisconsin.
I looked at the manifest you mentioned there, and maybe you already were able to decipher it, but if not, the letters in front of Marcin Masnica's name are "acqn" meaning that he was an acquaintance of Jan Tylka, rather than a relative. Just thought you'd like to know that if you didn't already. I hope the person researching Jan Tylka replies to you about what this connection might have been.
