lets see. Delancey pa is probably where my relatives headed. In the end, they were in Stump Creek, near sykesville which is about 15 miles from delancey. and they were all coal miners. i don't have access to ancestry.com, but i think there is a family tree there for joseph's family, including rose, under cherpish. looking at handwritten trees, i see the catherine, roses sister married to a mike mizen, probably the same person you see on the manifest.

first thanks for all your help untangling this . Here are some thoughts.

i did notice that the records were labeled as greek catholic and thought it was due to Maria possibly being greek catholic. Researching that, I found that in a mixed marriage, the marriage would be in the church of the bride. It appears from your research, the book is mislabeled. As far as I know from the family, there were no greek catholics, but its all based on oral history.

Regarding Rozalia coming to the US in 1896, many dates do not line up. I have not yet gotten access to the metrical book that may hold Rozalia's birth notice but am working on it as LDS records show it as available. Rozalia's death certificate shows her birthdate as 1885. Another document filed with immigration and naturalization lists her birthyear as 1883 and 1885 on another document. Her marriage license states she is 24 years old in 1902, making her birthdate in 1878. Most of the documents show her birthdate in the mid 1880's,. If she had come to the US before 1902, she would have been 12-14 years old. there is no family history that hinted that she arrived to the us twice by 1902. I think the 1896 date on the canadian border card card is incorrect, but its only a guess.

                                      Hi Sophia and Trish,
I found all the information about the family shown in the chart in the Roman Catholic Church. This is the correct manifest for Jan Mizun (the husband of Rozalia's sister Katharina). According to the marriage record from 1892, Jan was 26 years old at the time. This gives an estimated birth year of 1866.
Hello Mtmtntop,

Yes, we were able to see the manifest you mention from 1902, as that is the one that Trish posted. However, the index card is clear that Rozalia had been in the U.S. earlier than that. It shows the year 1896. So there should be another manifest for her, albeit from a year in which the manifests are far less informative with the amount of information that they gathered on each immigrant.

I also want to throw a little wrench into the works, regarding which church the records are from for the deaths of Michal and Maria, as well as Jan. When you follow the link to Family Search, the microfilm is clearly labelled as being Greek Catholic. However, that is not correct. You can see the name of the priest who recorded Maria's and Jan's death, it is Father Seweryn Feremberg. He was the priest for Holy Trinity R.C. church, not for the Greek Catholic church. Further, for Michal's death, the priest was Stanisław Świdecki, also a Roman Catholic priest. I do not know why there is this discrepancy in how the film is labelled.

I am attaching a screenshot from the cover page of the microfilm for Stary Dzikow. Barb, if you are reading this, does that show information about the church?

Perhaps the 1900 census could help? It is possible that more siblings came over to the USA. The parents died in 1894 and 1900.
Hi Barb,

The index card that was posted earlier in this thread shows Rozalia Pudlo entering at Buffalo NY after having been in Portage au Prairie, Manitoba, Canada. Interestingly, it seems to indicate that she was in the U.S. as early as 1896. Unfortunately, it's a little difficult to find that manifest since the index card says she arrived on the "S/S Unknown."

It's wonderful how much information you were able to pull together on this family.
Hi everyone,
A summary from me:
Rosalia's 1902 manifest states that she was traveling to her brother-in-law Iwan (Jan) Mizyń. Jan was married to Rosalia's older sister, Catharina. They were married in Poland in 1892. I found an 1894 death record for 1.5-year-old Anna, who was the daughter of Jan Mizyń and Catharina Cierpisz. Anna died in Koziówka, which belongs to the Stary Dzików parish. I suppose the family emigrated in early 1901.

Furthermore, Michal and Maria, whom you found in Genetyka, were Rosalia's parents, and Jan was her brother.

There is very little available online from Stary Dzików, but I managed to reconstruct a few generations back. Rosalia and her family lived in Ułazów in house no. 250. The family's original surname was, as Sophia pointed out, Cierpisz.

See the attached chart.

Regards,

You are asking a good question. If you follow this link, you will find the contact information for the church in Stary Dzików along with the very specific list of what records they have for what years.

https://parafie.genealodzy.pl/index.php?op=pr&pid=8089

It seems to exclude the year that you need for Rozalia. However, why not at least try to contact them to see what they say.

Best regards,
On the page of the death record for Jan, what you are reading as "Warzow" is actually saying Ułazów and that means he was living in Ułazów when he died of tuberculosis at the age of 23 1/2.

Ułazów looks very promising! Ułazów belonged to the church in Stary Dzików. See below a screenshot from Geneteka's index for Stary Dzików, showing the deaths of two people whose last name is Cierpisz. There is a possibility that these are Rozalia's parents.

The 1894 death is for Maria Cierpisz, age 50 1/2 years, and the 1900 death is for Michał Cierpisz, age 54 years. The text for each death clearly shows that they were wife and husband. I realize you are looking for Cierpicz and not Cierpisz. However, when you follow the link to the image for Maria, you see that her maiden name was Wolanin and that is close enough to Ulranin that it does make me pause.

What do you think?

The unfortunate part is that the birth records for Stary Dzików do not include the years 1872-1892 and that makes it impossible to confirm Rozalia's birth, if indeed she was from this place.

Best regards,
Sophia

Hi mtmtntop and Sophia,

Great find Sophia! I believe you found Rozalia's parents. I do agree with you that the surname Ulranin is for the correct surname of Wolanin.

I am attaching the death record for Maria Wolanin who married Michal Cierpisz. The record is from familysearch.org. It's image #45, record #53.

https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/3:1:33SQ-GRQ3-RSJ?i=44&cc=1910265&cat=257162&lang=en&groupId=1910265

I am attaching the death record for Michal Cierpisz from familysearch.org. It is record #8, however, it's on image #193 not #192.
Hi mtmtntop and Trish,

I believe this is the first original manifest for Rozalia coming to the USA in 1902. Here is the link from family search for the manifest. The manifest is a dark copy. Rozalia is on line #21. Rozalia is going to DeLancey, Pennsylvania. Rozalia married on 18 August 1902.

https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:JFGL-5YF?lang=en

I believe her and her husband, "Anthony" Pudlo went somewhere, maybe a visit in Canada for the record you posted was the border crossing from Canada to the USA in 1908.

Hi Trish,

Thanks for this!

I have to correct my statement about the index card. It is the same type as was used for extracting information from ship manifests but as you pointed out, this one was from a land crossing. The manifest you posted from 1902 is really helpful. I believe it is showing her last residence as Ułazów. It's difficult because the person writing the manifest added "Galicia" and the part of the letter "G" that dips below the line makes it a little hard to decipher. You see exactly the same thing up on line 11. There is an Ułazów, Poland and it is not far from Cieszanów (about 8 miles west).

Hi,

This is an index card, derived from a ship's manifest, for Rozalia Pudlo.

The town that is given in the box along with "Galicia, Austria" is, to my eye, Lazof and in my opinion this is most likely meant to be Łazów. There is a Łazów in Poland, in the Podkarpackie region.

I did briefly consider Płazów as the real name of the place because there is a Płazów just 7 miles northeast of Cieszanów. However, it does not seem that likely that the leading letter "P" would have been missed by the person transcribing information from the manifest onto the index card.

Best regards,
Hi,

You didn't find records there because you included the name Maria in your search for Uranin records in Jaroslaw. If you look at the screenshots that I am attaching, you will see that I searched with only the surname Uranin. There are a few records for Katarzyna Uranin in Jaroslaw, whose married name was spelled by the indexers as Matujek and as Matrejek. If you do the search the same way that I did, you will see marriage and death records there also; my screen shot shows only the baptisms.

I am attaching a second screen shot, this time from Ukraine, for a Maria Kocur whose married name was Uranin.

I don't know how helpful either of these are to your research, but worth taking a look at anyway, right?

Best regards,
Sophia
