If anyone knows where to find vital statistics for Augustow for 1891 through 1895, I would appreciate the information. Geneteka does not include those years.

The immigration record for my grandfather was listed as Iwaszka even though that is the feminine ending and his name was Iwaszko.

The census records would not have the name of her mother, but it usually has the year of immigration. That can help narrow down your grandmother's arrival. Since Ewa was 9 years older, perhaps your grandmother traveled with her? It would be interesting to see if they have the same year (or nearly the same, since people did not always remember) of immigration on their census records.

The Polish and Lithuanian versions of your grandmother's surname may be spelled differently. I could not find my Lithuanian great-grandfather for many years and then by a stoke of luck, I found that he and his brother were boarders in my great-aunt's house before he was married. The census record had his name in the Polish spelling. With that I found his passenger record under this spelling.

Also, consider the feminine spelling of Polish surnames. Anna and Ewa might be listed as something like Iwaszkowa, or Iwaszka. I would use the Steve Morse Gold form and search "name starts with" for passenger Ann Iwaszk - leaving off the end of the names. This will give more results to examine. Anna's sister was Ewa Iwaszko born in 1882, married Jan Arinowicz (correctly spelled Aranowicz) in the 1890's and then to Peter Yelinewicz (Jeleniewicz) in 1903 after Jan Aranowicz died in the mines. Ewa Iwaszko Aranowicz Jeliniewicz died in 1918 of the Spanish Flu.

She was raised by her father and a stepmother. Her mother died in Poland and someone unknown to us brought her to this country when she was very young. She did not have the same mother as her elder sister Ewa, and her only other siblings were from her father and step mother. None of the census records have any info on her mother. I have mining records for death of first husband, cemetery headstones for her relatives, census records etc. I cannot find her sister Ewa or my grandmother on the passenger lists.

I do not think my grandmother had the same mother as any of her siblings. She inherited property in Poland but could not afford to keep it and of course could not go freely in and out of Poland.

Yes, thank you. That is where I found the Szczesny Iwaszko connection. I could not find any other listing of Jozefa Szczesny other than her marriage to Piotr Iwaszko in 1887. I'm looking for her birth, or death record as Szczesna or Iwaszka. My grandmother Anna Iwaszka was born in 1891 and I have not found her birth record in the recently archived Augustow records. My great grandfather's parish was Punsk (Wolynce) and he was a forest gamekeeper.

Geneteka database has:
for Szczesny: 66 births, 34 marriages and 30 deaths (Agustow only; there are more in nearby places);
for Iwaszko: 1 marriage, 4 deaths.
