My family name is Kużniak and my ancestors seem to have come from the Szamotuly area of the 1700s and 1800s in the small towns like Braczewo, Sycyn, etc. I think that a kużnia is a smith shop and thus could a Kuzniak be one who works there? I.e. can Kużniak just be the Polish version of Smith? My sister in law says no, that that would be Kowalsky from kowal.
