Hi Amy,

Here are some choices for you to consider.

Often, on Polish gravestones, you will see the letters “Ś.P.” engraved above the name of the deceased. This is an abbreviation of “świętej pamięci” which means “of holy memory.” Some may prefer to translate "świętej pamięci" as "the late" [followed by a person's name] but I like the formality of the phrase "of holy memory." If you decide to use either the abbreviation or the full phrase, you really must have an engraver who will understand the diacritical marks used in Polish.

If you go with “beloved father” you would put “ukochany ojciec” above or beneath the name. This gives you the advantage of letters that have no diacritical marks.

If you like the phrase “always remembered” then it is “zawsze w pamięci” . It captures your idea of "never forgotten" from a slightly different angle.

If you wish to address some words to him directly, you can say “ukochany ojcze, pamiętamy” which means “beloved father, we remember you.”

You can use a combination, if you like:

Ś.P.
[his name]
ukochany ojciec

Best,
Just as I thought.
I wanted to place something written in Polish on my dads Headstone. I am trying to think of various options. His dad was born on the ship when they immigrated to America through Ellis Island. We grew up hearing English/Polish mixed conversations. Unfortunately, I didn't absorb enough to spell it or speak it well.

Some options I am considering:
Beloved
Beloved Dad or Beloved Father
Until we meet Again
Never Forgotten
Do you have any suggestions?
Thanks,

Hi Amy,
I hope that several people join this conversation. It's a wonderful idea that you have.
May I recommend that you look at the top of the screen, where it says "BLOG" and click on that, and scroll down to the blog entry "I bought a grave!" which was written by Cynthia, who contributes quite a lot on this forum. It is a great story!
In the meantime, I will give some thought to what you might put on the gravestone.
Best,

Hi,
It seems like a simple enough question, but there is more to it than you might expect!
I could say, "beloved father" is "ukochany ojciec".
However, if you are using it in a sentence, it all changes.
For example, you might be speaking to your beloved father, perhaps as you begin writing a letter to him. Or you might be talking to God and call Him your Beloved Father.
Or you could be speaking about your beloved father, as in "I received my favorite book from my beloved father."
In this last case, you'll see "ukochany ojciec" change to "ukochanego ojca."
You could give a book to your beloved father. Now it is "ukochanemu ojcu."
Quite a change!
If you could say how you plan to use the phrase, then you will get a much more accurate answer to your question.
