Im writing you from Holland since your quest has sparked an interest. My grandmother Maria Poreba born 1910 is indeed from the Gallicia area. My mother is Polish her mother had maiden name Poreba and it's not super common. The town you name, Grybów is situated about 1 hour from both Slovakia and 2 hours from the Ukraine. Seeing that in those days it wasnt that common to find your spouse very far from the nest we might as well just be far relatives My grandma lived 30 km from Grybow. If you happen to visit Poland this year I would suggest you also look at the Tarnow Roman Catholic Diocese Church Books, (1612-1900) which you can find at https://familysearch.org/search/collection/1985025. It gave me at least the names of my great grand parents from my mothers side. So long story short I think it's worth for you to go to Tarnów which is more East to find more relatives in the church books. You maybe bump into me, Im also going t here beginning of August to see what more I can find about my roots.

Nicole sorry it has taken me this long to answer and i'm not sure you will see this or not...don't know how to reply properly...my email address is ronporemba@hotmail.com . I am leaving for Warsaw on aug 22 and will spend two days there then we will be going to Krakow for 3 days...hopefully as you suggest I will be able to get over to Tarnow and review the records at the church....And ofcourse we very well may be related....there are an awful lot of Poreba's that are from this area of Poland....My daughter Kelli Poremba our named was changed to poremba when Granddad came to the United States because that's how it sounds when you say Poreba.....anyway she is the one taking me to Poland....

If you have access to Jazowsko parish records I would advice you to look for marriage record of Catharina Surma and Adalbertus (Wojciech) Poremba starting from 1896 and going backwards.

Zenon thank you for your information . Cheri gave me the ship and the date of birth for josef poremba is that of my grandfather.. now i am spectulating about Zourowa but i am asuming that is where my grandfather's father may have moved to sometime after the birth of my grandfather...i have found a baptisim record for a josephus poreba on 20 Dec 1896. the event took place in Krolowa polska which is near grybow. that record shows father's name of Adalbertus poreba and mothers name of Catharina Sarma. i cant find birth record for Adalbertus but i did find a record for a Catharina Surma. Date of birth was 22 Sep 1876 and the place was Jazowsko which is also very close to Grybow. If this is my granfathers mother she would have been 20 years old when he was born.. The age makes me beleive that this might be a possibility!!!!!. I am going to go into the sites you have recommended Zenon and hopefully something might match up....I'm 71 years old now so i am really starting late with this search... I would like to leave as much information as I can to my three children... Again i say THANK YOU and i really appreciate all the effort that has been put in toward my search.......sincerely ron poremba
Ron,

I think that Cheri's finding of death record of a baby of Joseph and Sophia from 1927 http://forum.polishorigins.com/viewtopic.php?p=9001#9001 is a very important clue for your further research. It provides important details about possible birth places of both Jozef and Sophia.

I think that Sophia's correct maiden name spelling is Drobot. If you look at the map of distribution of surnames in today's Poland you will see that most of Drobots currently live in Tarnow and Debica: http://www.moikrewni.pl/mapa/kompletny/drobot.html .

However, if you don't have luck in finding your Joseph in Grybow records I would definitely tried the Żurowa trace. The information from passenger list found by Cheri and Gilberto including sister Aniela and the other Porembas emigrating from Żurowa: http://forum.polishorigins.com/viewtopic.php?p=8992#8992 look also promising. You probably noticed in the line #6 Poremba Josef born 1896.

What may be also very interesting for you is the map of Porębas and Porembas currently living in Poland: http://www.moikrewni.pl/mapa/kompletny/por%25C4%2599ba.html and http://www.moikrewni.pl/mapa/kompletny/poremba.html . As you can easily notice most of Porębas and Porembas live in Nowy Sacz county (where Grybow belongs) and Tarnow county (where Żurowa belongs). And both of the places are in close distance to Debica, see the map: http://goo.gl/maps/REjc2 .
I think that thanks to our wonderful friends you are very close to discovering your family history in Poland .
Hi Ron,
It's so nice that we have gotten so far! By reading your posts, It seemed like you were looking for a village Poreba at the beginning when you were exploring all possibilities.

ronjohn8 wrote:

...that being said i am now going to ask just how i go about requesting theLDS records...

Ron, I'm not quite sure if you mean that you are asking us for instruction on how to request LDS microfilm, or if you mean that you are going to ask your local LDS.....

Either way, you will want to visit this site and sign up (it's free) for an LDS user account. There is no obligation to join - but you will need this to place an order for microfilm.

https://familysearch.org

We are happy to help you further, if you want.
Hi,
Joseph Poremba might have only signed the draft registration, the handwriting doesn't appear to be the same on the rest of it. If a recruiter filled it out, he would have just been going by the sound of the town (as Shellie thought). This is what happened on my grandfather's Social Security registration. I think his boss must have filled it out, and he just signed it. It listed his mother's maiden name as Bortsky (or something like that - a surname that didn't exist). I found out later that her name had been Boczkaj (my mother's cousin knew).

I had previously said that there could be mistakes on death records. Well, usually it's the informants fault. Usually it's a child giving the information about a parent, or a spouse giving the information, and they are grieving, and might not remember correctly. In the case of the Poremba baby, the informant would have been Joseph or Sophia, so I would tend to trust that information as correct. Another problem could be with an indexer that interpretted the information incorrectly. It's always better to see the original document, but in this case, both the villages of Joseph and Sophia exist (Grybow and Debica), Sophia's maiden name Drobat is a surname in Poland (I hadn't found anything on Grobart), so I trust that it was indexed correctly.

You might still want to get Joseph's naturalization papers, but if you pursued the birth records that the LDS has filmed, and found Joseph born there on December 19, 1896, then you will know, and you will know his parent's names and grandparents names. I say this with a bit of envy, since the LDS has not filmed in either of my grandparents villages!!
Best of luck, and have a wonderful experience going home to Poland,
Cheri

I agree with Cheri thoughts. My doubt is: what makes Ron think the birthplace was Poreba and not another village?

Best of luck, and have a wonderful experience going home to Poland,
Ron, I don't see why a person would give incorrect information to a military institution. Unless you have your grandfather's birth record, how do you know the exact name of the village he was born?
Ron,

If this draft card belongs to your grandfather, Grybów may be his village (or very close by his village).

The place of birth written on his draft card is Guybof, which could be the phonetic version of Grybów. You can listen to it here: just type in Grybow or cut and paste Grybów and select Polish language: http://www.oddcast.com/home/demos/tts/tts_example.php?sitepal
Also, cut and paste Poręba there to hear how the ę makes the name sound like Por EM ba.

It is possible that there is more than one Grybów in Poland. The Grybów that Cheri found in the LDS index is near Nowy Sacz..... I strongly recommend looking at the LDS microfilm to see if you find some ancestors and possibly confirm that this is the village you seek.

If you would like some help figuring out how to access records through the LDS, several of us can share our experiences.

                                      Ron,
Looks like Joseph and Sophia had a baby that died in 1927:
Name: Poremba
Birth Date: 21 Mar 1927
Birth Place: Michigan
Death Date: 21 Mar 1927
Death Place: Wyandotte, Wayne, Michigan
Burial Date: 22 Mar 1927
Cemetery Name: Mt. Carmel
Death Age: 0
Race: White
Marital Status: Single
Gender: Male
Street Address: 4 S. Fifth
Father Name: Joseph Poremba
Father Birth Place: Grybow, Poland
Mother Name: Sophia Drobat
Mother Birth Place: Dembica, Poland
FHL Film Number: 2115273
Maybe that is Sophia's correct maiden name. Maybe those are their correct birth places, but there can be mistakes in death records. Well, there can be mistakes in other records as well, that's why it's important to get as much documentation as you can. I was told that a man's naturalization record can have his wife's maiden name and birth place on it as well. If your Joseph is from Grybow, looks like you are one of the lucky ones whose ancestors church records were filmed by the LDS:
https://familysearch.org/eng/library/fhlcatalog/supermainframeset.asp?display=titledetails&titleno=816807&disp=Ksi%26%23x119%3Bgi+metrykalne &columns=*,0,0
And maybe your grandmother's family records were filmed as well:
https://familysearch.org/eng/library/fhlcatalog/supermainframeset.asp?display=localityhitlist&columns=*%2C0%2C0&PLACE=debica&PARTOF=&prePLACE=debica&prePARTOF=

An aside: I found a nice map with 3 partitions of Poland, 1772, 1793 and 1795 (then 123 years without Poland, until 1918) it may help too http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/thumb/3/30/Rzeczpospolita_Rozbiory_3.png/765px-Rzeczpospolita_Rozbiory_3.png

Kind regards,

I just looked at that map and note that Torun & Plock show in the Purssian partition.. My grandfather's family, of which I have several generations of results, were in the Russian partition - which was between those two cities (Lipno). His birth, in 1881, as well as his siblings and his parents and grandparents documents were all written in Russian. He, and siblings, also gave "Russia" as their country of origin on E.I. manifests.

So I have to be a bit skeptical about that map's accuracy.

I'll look for other maps showing the partitions.
