A 35 ys old 'Mojzy' [Alojz?] Niemczura from Odrowaz arrived in New York on June 17, 1907, accompanied by his wife Roya/Roza [Rozalia Gwidz?], 32 ys old, daughter Florentina, 9 ys old, and son Mieczyslaw, 11 months old. According to the passenger record, his occupation was organist, their place of birth and last residence abroad is indexed as Odrowaz, they were headed to Berca, Ohio to join a friend, Dr. Piotr (can’t make out last name -- Czwi…?). Is he the organist from Odrowaz you are referring to?

I wonder if these Ohio Niemczuras were related to the Odrowaz Niemczuras: https://familysearch.org/search/record/results#count=20&query=%2Bsurname%3ANiemczura~%20%2Bresidence_place%3AOhio~

It would also be interesting to check out where the other Niemczura emigrants shown on Gilberto's list were headed to and if there is a connection between the families (five were from 'Radgoszcz', one from 'Badgosa' (probably also 'Radgoszcz'), four from 'Luszowice', three from 'Lipiny', etc.).

The surname does exist and the spelling is correct. Polish 1990 census (www.herby.com.pl) displays:

Niemczura 429
Wa:9, Bs:1, BB:1, Ch:2, Cz:1, JG:6, Ka:29, Ki:10, Ko:5, Kr:20, Lg:4, Ło:3, NS:2, Op:12, Pł:1, Po:4, Pr:1, Rz:1, Sł:4, Sz:7, Tb:2, Ta:262, Wb:9, Wr:32, Za:1
The two letters refer to the abbreviaton of the 49 provinces existing by then (now 16 only). See map attached.
Also, 21 Niemczura arrived at Ellis Island (www.stevemorse.org > Gold Form)

My family name is Niemczura.

My immediate family came to the US from Poland in the teens and twenties of the twentieth century. I've never met anyone with the name that I wasn't related to, and suspected for a long time that it was an Ellis Island name fix.

However, I have met a couple native Polish speakers who have told me that they thought the name is an insulting reference to a German woman, explaining that Niemcz is from the root word for "german."

Surface level research never shows "Niemczura" in any of the databases. My family assimilated very quickly and never looked back; I think I'm the only one interested in finding out where we came from or who we used to be.

Anyone out there who can help?
