The English etymology provides an answer, and says "the name was more popular in France than in England":

If you try French etymology

it says it's derived from "hile" and "aire"
For "hile", the answer goes to Latin:
Empr. au lat. class.hilum « un rien, une parcelle; point noir au haut de la fève (d'apr. Paul Diacre ds TLL s.v., 2790, 49) ».
"hile" is something very small, almost nothing, a dot on a bean; "aire" means surface
