Hi. I'm from Dupont, and my mother was a Łokuta, aka Łokuć. I lived on Everhart St. two doors down from Gabriela Panuszka.

Bad news, I'm afraid, about records in Poland. The Teolin Parish in Sopoćkinie was closed by the Russians in the 1870s. Whatever records that do exist from that Parish are now in Sylwanowice, and, according to the pastor, are in deplorable shape.

The family was from Nowosiółki, not Nowe Sady. They were a very large and wealthy family. Unfortunately, the area was completely devastated during WWII, first by the Soviets, with the biggest battle of their invasion taking place there, and then by the Nazi's, who started their invasion of Russia there. Nowosiółki was right on the front line and got wiped out.

If you don't know where these places are, they are now in the northwest corner of Belarus about 5 miles from the Polish border. If you type Sopockin in Google Maps, Novoselki is about half a mile to the Northwest.

Łokuta is not a Polish name, but a Lithuanian one. It means "bear cub". However, by the late 1800s, they had been completely Polonized and didn't speak Lithuanian anymore. Gabriela Panuszki did, though.

Dozens upon dozens of Lokuta's came to Dupont, all cousins in some way or another. Many moved on to Walled Lake, Michigan, too. Other families from the Sopoćkinie area also moved to Dupont. My grandmother's group of friends knew each other in the old country.

There are still some Łokuć's living in Sopoćkinie. Unfortunately, it is difficult to get there, as Belarus is a dictatorship. I lived in Poland for twelve years, and never got approved for a visa.

They originated in Nowosady, Poland and worshipped in the Catholic church in Teolin/Sopockinie. There is very little information from this area which is now located in Belarus.
My great grandparents Jan Panuszka and Antonina Lukuc Panuszka immigrated in the early 1900’s and settled in Dupont, PA in the USA.
Any information on the Lukuc and Panuszka surnames would be very much appreciated.
Hi Debste80 and Barbara,
Here is the ship's manifest for Antonina coming to the USA to see her husband, Jan in Dupont, Pennsylvania. She is on line #5. There is a town listed.

I am also attaching the Naturalization record for Jan Panuszka. It also lists the towns for both Jan and Antonina.

I hope the helps!
Hi
There are several places with the same name.
Do you have any documents you can attach here, that would help?

Regards,
