Hello mimm746,

Here are some clues concerning the surnames you are interested in:

Surname Matejak comes from Polish given name Maciej; Hebrew [Mattithyāh] and [Mattanyāh], slightly different forms of a name meaning “gift of God,” were rendered in Greek as both Ματθίας [Matthías] and Ματθαῖος [Matthaios], producing Latin Matthias and Matthaios— Poles adopted Matthias in the forms Maciej and Matyjasz = English
Matthias, and they adopted Matthaeus as Mateusz = English Matthew, but these names have been confused and regarded as equivalents to such a degree that it’s hard to separate them.

In 2002 there were 349 individuals using the surname Matejak living in Poland. Detailed map of the surname distribution can be found here: https://nazwiska-polskie.pl/Matejak.

Maslik (in Polish should be Maślik) comes from the word masło “butter”.

Mastejak root is seen in maścić, “to oil, grease, butter,” or omasta, “fat, gravy”

Mastejak/Maslayak and Maślik are very rare surnames in Poland: In 2002 there were only 4 people bearing the surname Mastejak, and only 27 bearing the surname Maślik. See the maps: https://nazwiska-polskie.pl/Mastejak and https://nazwiska-polskie.pl/Ma%C5%9Blik

Nawalana/Nawalany comes from Polish word nawalić, “to amass, heap up,” nawała, “attack, invasion; powerful wave, storm”.

In 2002 there were 71 individuals using the surname Nawalana and 527 using the surname Nawalany living in Poland. Detailed maps of the surname distribution can be found here: https://nazwiska-polskie.pl/Nawalana and here: https://nazwiska-polskie.pl/Nawalany .
These names are all from Czarna (Chorny) Woda (Voda) and are Lemko. I would appreciate any information on these families from this village prior to 1900. Many of them immigrated to the United States around that time period. My grandfather was Jan Matejak (on ship's manifest) but later changed it and my father is the only one who carried what is close to the original family name. My grandmother was Orina Nawalana and all I can find is that her passage was sponsored through a bank. Please help. Thank you in advance.
