the term kopczarz had the second meaning too.
It was used to describe cottager cultivating a garden or a small field who worked a specified number of days in exchange for a specific quantity of grain expressed in units of measurement called kopa.
So the source that writes about it says that the word kopczarz comes from the word kopa. (second definition)

Also the term was used to describe someone who produces soot. (first definition, first meaning)

I recently found this word in a few records I have been indexing, probably the closest English term would be a 'Swiddener', a person who clears forested land using slash and burn technique.

Here is an English version of Bea's explanation: A kopczarz is a farmer who tills the soil which is found after the clearing of forest land.

W XIX w. wyraz kopczarz był używany w dwu znaczeniach. Według Słownika języka polskiego J. Karłowicza, A. Kryńskiego, W. Niedźwiedzkiego oznaczał: 1) tego, który się trudnił wyrabianiem sadzy, oraz 2) osadnika na gruncie wykarczowanym, wykopanym w lesie. Sądzę, że Pański przodek był rolnikiem (włościaninem), który gospodarzył na gruntach powstałych po wykarczowaniu (wypaleniu) lasów.

Hello,

In the town of Chalin\Mokowo,1860's, the occupation Kopczan or Kopczarz is very common. Three dictionaries and Google have no translation. Does it have something to do with kopac = dig? Could someone tell me what the occupation was?
