Hello Dave,

Thank you so much for your explanation - I really appreciate your help. I'll now do a bit more digging and see if I can find out anything regarding his military service.

I’m struggling to understand the text which comes after the following transcription which relates to the groom, Jan Bandynda.

Marriage took place on 30th May, 1844 at Babince Gorne, near to Rohatyn
House No. 14

Jan, son of Cyryl Bandynda, farmer from Babince and Anna Slusar …………….

The record can be found on https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/3:1:33SQ-GR9Y-F73?cat=741651&i=567

Thank you, Jillian

Jillian,

The text reads “demissus miles 2 L????? (vernacular i.e. not Latin military unit designation) Batal.” which is translated “a discharged soldier of the 2nd L????? Battalion”. Since I’m not familiar with the 19th Century units of the Austrian Army and since the title of the battalion is in the vernacular and the handwriting is difficult to read I can’t provide the unit’s title. The entry indicates that the groom had completed his military service and had been discharged from the Austrian Army as a veteran in good standing. That he had served for years in the military explains why he was still a bachelor at 37 years of age.
