Polish Archives have already scanned 10 millions of documents!

Brief summary of the digitalization process:
- All scans are available to the public for free
- Currently they have scanned the records from 28 branches (for example: Warsaw, Poznań, Częstochowa, Kalisz, Kraków, Lublin, Łódź and recently added: Siedlce and Płock)
- What kind of documents are being scanned?
First of all: civil status records, population records, acts of the towns and districts, court and notary documents, cartographic and geodetic documentation
- The online ressources are still growing! In 2013 the 13 millions of pages were scanned.
- In 2013 project "Szukaj w Archiwach" had 20 millions of users.

Visit their website and search the Polish Archives: http://szukajwarchiwach.pl/

Hi,

It's easy.

In the bottom it says "... Wszystkich pozycji 332", so you know how many.

In the right corner you have "pozycji na stronie" with 20, you may replace it by 50, then on the next line click on "Wyszukaj".

You will see the result is in 7 sets (332 divided by 50 rounded up), and numbers
[1] 2 3 4 5 6 7

Click on consecutive numbers to see all the 7 sets.

Best,

In the upper left hand corner is a link which will take you to information about a group that can help you with your records search. Both Łukasz and Kasia have done work for me and I am very pleased with the results. As they are based in Poznan, they should be very familiar with the records you are seeking.
I had a quick look on Poznan website http://aap.poznan.pl/ - they have plenty of old books, not only vital records, a lot for historians. Apparently one may go there and lookup archives as well, you must reserve your place in advance. They also have an index of what seems to be parish's books by village and years (not easy to understand it on the fly, here http://bazy.aap.poznan.pl/ksiegi.php)

My understanding is that the cost for service is the same for everyone, in PLN. Anything else is bank's hurdles.

I do hope someone from Poznan area may help here.
Hi Elzbieta
Thank you for the explaination. Would there be anyone in Poland that could get a birth certificate from the Archives for me or do they have to go through the same thing? Over here in Canada and in England you can go to Archives and look it up yourself then give them the information and pay them. I would pay them in advance for a genealogical certificate, plus some for their time.
That is disussing that the banks ripp people off like that.

Is there anyone who would help me?
Thank you very much.
I just received this email from Poland.

I thought someone said that the prices had come down for certificates?
Also could someone explain what all the other stuff is, I understand what they are talking about in #2 but what is the rest of it. I guess we are loosing something in translation.

Diane

Hi Diane,

I understand what they wrote, but feel ashamed to explain it.

It starts with their address phones etc.

They consider you must know the precise vital record (item 1), and that you need it mostly for some official documents (item 2), because either you want money (court trial, inheritance), or you want to demonstrate your religion (church-office). Genealogy seems irrelevant - they do not scan or copy anything (Polish word for printed copy is xero).
They ask circa $US 15 (50 PLN) for the first hour of search, then $US 12 per hour (40 PLN). If success, they will type it on a piece of paper (middleage method), no doubt with seals, stamps, signatures, and all that jazz, and it will cost you additional $US 3 (10 PLN) per such decorated page inserted into enveloppe.
They need 4-5 month to execute your order paid in advance.

The additional information is related to bank's methods, which are very similar to pirats operating in Indian Ocean today.
Here is my unique but exceptional experience with international money transfer.
Once upon a time I was member of an non profit international organization set up to lobby some internet related issues. We had a bank account, apparently in two currencies, dollars US and euros. We received 60 donations coming from not less than 40 countries, all wired money. With the notable exception of Norway we did not see any other case when the amount sent by someone abroad was equal to the amont of money received, anything else was less, or much less. On wired tracability documents in 2 cases we could not identify the coutry of origin of the transfer.
In all international bank's transfer you have fees of sending bank, fees of receiving bank, fees of currency exchange (even if it's the same currency), fees of letter, and it lasts between 2 days and 4 weeks. In general.

Applying my bank experience to the letter from Poznan:
1. In addition to bank's piracy in money transfer, Archiwum in Poznan will add 10 PLN (item 3 extra cost: bank commission on transfers from abroad – 10 PLN)
2. They warn you that bank must use the correct rate (item 4) - you cannot anything about, it's bank's piracy, no matter how concilient you would like to be with Poznan requirements
3. They give you all information related to their bank: postal address, SWIFT code (that is abount bank office) and IBAN (that is international bank AND account number, it starts with ISO3166 alpha-2 code of a country - here PL, then you have bank identifiers - redundancy with SWIFT, then personal bank account number - so it is exactly their bank account; 26 to 30 digits/letters long).

Then there is a bottom line: e-mail, minimal fees 60 PLN wired to the bank, fax that you send money (that is about bank's piracy - you NEVER know when banks start international transfer, and when it's done, and receiver is seldom if ever informed who wired-transfer money to his account). In addition the Archiwum imagines you have fax - nobody uses it anymore, but who cares. They will start the work within 4-5 months.
Let me add more subtitles:
a. Bank's piracy fees on 60 PLN will be much bigger for you than 60 PLN circa $US18
b. IMHO they will need 1 hour to browse index and see your record is in their archives or not. If non, it's done (on expenses side). If they have something more interesting, they will ask you additional hours, next 60 or 80 or 100 PLN, which will still be lesser than bank's piracy fees. They do not post Xero-copy, so you will never see original vital record, only papers with interpreted records.

I am sorry. As I said, I feel ashamed to explain.

Thank you for the reply. Do you know if the university keeps records of previous students?

My grandmother never really recovered when she came to Australia after the war and I would like to understand what her life was like before that.

Maria

Hi Maria,

I do not know if the current university in Lviv Ukraina keeps past records, or have received past records. I know from my Mom, who started mathematics at Lwow in 1938 (following her elder sister), that after the WWII some professors from Lwow, at least mathematicians, moved to Jagiellonian University in Krakow.

Google shows people seeking for list of students: http://genealodzy.pl/PNphpBB2-printview-t-5715-start-0.phtml
At the end of that page it's written:
"Proponuję zapytać w Centralnym Państwowym Archiwum Historycznym Ukrainy we Lwowie najlepiej mailem na Dyrektora (można pisać po polsku):
archives2000@gmail.com
lub na telefon/fax: (38+032)235-45-08"
which basicaly means you may inquire (about a list of students) writing in Polish to the given email of the Central Historical Archives in Lwow or by phone.
As far as I know, there is still a lot of people speaking Polish in Lviv, some are native Polish.

Are you familiar with Polish Universities booklet, so called "Index Uniwersytecki"? It's one of the most precious documents, which gives you precisely everything about the student: all the curriculum, examinations, professors, as well as paiements for the tutition, or sametimes financial help (rebate). If your grandma was student, she would keep it. Education was sacred in Polish families, when I was a child, my Mom used to say "you have to learn, go to school and learn, it's the only thing nobody ever can steal from you".

I attach two pages from my Aunt booklet, from 1931, signed by the Dean, Hugo Steinhaus.

Silesia Library keeps one Lwow document from 1927/28 with all professors and managements, it's here: http://www.sbc.org.pl/dlibra/plain-content?id=11712
Page 31 they list famous Polish mathematicians, including professors Hugo Stenhaus and Stefan Banach, both in charge of preparing teachers for secondary schools (szkol srednich - today high schools or liceum).

Wiki http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lviv_University gives some information about Lwow University, such as number of students students: "in the academic year 1934/35 there were 5900 students at the university".

If my grandmother was born in Przmysl in 1912 which archives is the best one to write to and what information would I need to provide them. Also on her immigration paper it said she was an elementary teacher would she have gone to university or teachers college back then.

Greetings,

My both parents were from Przemysl, and both grand-parents lived there until their death. Since 2005 I travel each year to Warsaw for All Saints Day, and take two-days to go to Przemysl, where I still have cousins. My cousin from Przemysl is retired director of one of Liceum in Przemysl.

One of my Aunts, born in 1913, graduated in 1938 from Jan Kazimierz University in Lwow, in mathematics, and she was professor at Gimnazjum in Przemysl, and worked in Tajne Nauczanie. Even today, 30 years after she passed away, without any single family in Przemysl, her grave is always covered with flowers and candles lighted on November 1st: the teachers from Przemysl schools keep memory, and explain to yound kids how it was difficult to learn, when education was forbidden by occupant.

Gimnazjum probably translate to High School, however Liceum or Gimnazium was orders of magnitude more important in Poland those days as compared to the US today. An aside comment: in Western countries we have today more Ph.D. that we had people with Matura before WWII.

Elementary school teacher was an important position in 1930's.

In 1930's the young people from Przemysl used to go to Lwow University.

Kind regards,
