You are prefectly right, Shellie. According to Polish wikipedia http://pl.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jan_Kanty "Jan Kanty" is a male first name made up of two words Jan and nickname of Polish saint living at the breakthrough of 14th and 15th centuries Saint John Cantius (known also in English as John of Kanty or John of Kanti).

More on my observations of the middle name Kanty. I have found several other names using "Kanty" - all Jan Kanty --- associated with Czarny Dunajec and Odrowąż:

Examples:
Jan Kanty Lopata
Jan Kanty Kojs
Jan Kanty Mis
Jan Kanty Dusza
Jan Kanty Babicz
Jan Kanty Hosana
Jan Kanty Fiedor

I am more and more convinced that this is was a popular name in the past in honor of St John Kanty. Does anyone have more information to confirm this?

I read the post about the Kanty surname and it made me think of something I've seen during my research. One of my relatives was named John Kanty Kadlub. He was my great-grandfather's (Stanislaus Kulawiak) brother-in-law. Later, while exploring Ellis Island records for other Kulawiak's from the same village Odrowąż, I found a Kulawiak from this village traveling with Jan Kanty Masnicz. In the very short time that I have been researching my ancestors, I have seen very few middle names on ship manifests and US draft registrations. Could Kanty be the mother's surname, used as a middle name - was this common in Poland around 1898 or 1900? Or is there some connection with St. Kanty?
