Sorry for jumping in so late and without documents. I don't know if any of this is helpful or not. But it may be useful based on century, location and surnames, if you end up coming up with a concrete relationship with specific Puzios.

A relative's tree lists a Lucja Puzio (born about 1766 in Sie or Spie, Wilcza Wola), who married Walenty Kolodziej (about 1758-1819, born in Cholewiana Góra, Nisko County). According to this tree, her siblings were Wojciech, Agnieszka, and Katarzyna.

Another relative's family tree lists a Sophia Puzio, born in Bojanow on May 22, 1827. She was the daughter of Antonius Puzio and Eva Kata. Sophia Puzio married Franciscus Sudol, and they had at least one child, Phillipus Sudol (born Wilcza Wola, May 29, 1847). Philippus married Maria Serafin (1851-1906).

Someone made their family tree public with another Puzio who married a Sudol in Wilcza Wola. https://www.kalemba.net/familychart.php?personID=I3990&tree=kalemba_Malecki

I have Borowiec ancestors from Nisko county. At least one--possible all--was supposedly born in Jezowe, Nisko County. Nowosielec and Jezowe are about 9 km apart. However, my late mother mentioned that Nowosielec may have been her father's birthplace.

I've also had a number of people with the surname Puzio or in their family tree show as relations on DNA sites.

BarbOslo wrote:

Thanks Trish and Sophia.
For 3 hours I have been "running" between parishes, and I did not find any matches. I assumed that the Manifest for Wilhelm Walerko is correct. We have been given abt. year of birth, place where he came from and father's name. We also have his date of birth from WW1/2 Draft Cards.
The village of Nowosielec in the 19th century and in the first half of the 20th century it belonged to the parishes of Racławice and Jeżowe. Both are indexed on Genetyka, but checked the church books again. Parish Nisko is not indexed, so I checked “page by page” with a good margin. No last name Walerko to see. No Wilhem (or Guilherme). I checked similar surnames with a father named Jozef. There I found Jozef Wdowiak, Watras, Wojtak, Warchol. Surname Warchol is most often seen in the church books for this area. But none of these are similar to Walerko. So everything indicates that from the first registration in the USA the surname was changed or that we have to look elsewhere. I believe that the New Jersey Marriage Record, 1915 could give us more answers. What about naturalization?

I'm glad you have posted all of these manifests. What fun would a morning cup of coffee be, without being able to look at some of these lovely old documents?!

I was interested to see how many of these people had the intended destination of "Dondy Street" in Passaic, when there is no such street. At first I thought they meant Bond Street, but they were so persistent with the use of Dondy that it did not seem to be a simple error. I consulted a list of streets in Passaic that were re-named over time and did not find Dondy there. Now I have it figured out. They are referring to the Dundee neighborhood (you still see on google maps the Dundee Island Park) and that is where 6th Street is. So actually, they were going to 6th Street in the Dundee neighborhood of Passaic, not to Dondy Street.
Hi Everyone,

This is what I found so far on Andrzej Puzio.

Andrew Puzio married Marianna Rembisz in 1913 in New Jersey - License #29402. (Record can be obtained by the New Jersey State Archives.)

Andrew Puzio Puzio died in October 1918 in New Jersey. (Record can be obtained by the New Jersey State Archives.)
Name	Andrew Puzio
Death Date	Oct 1918
Death Place	Bergen, New Jersey, USA

Possible Ship's Manifest for Andrzej Puzio. He is on line #10. This is a 2 page manifest.

Regards,
Trish

Hi Trish,

Great info!

So now that we know Andrzej Puzio died in 1918, it makes sense that the family put a memorial entry in the church jubilee book in 1928 since it marked the 10-year anniversary of his death. What a loss, someone so young.

The ship manifest is very interesting. First of all, note that it was a two week journey by sea, in February. Think about that. And by leaving in 1912, they were safely out of Europe before the destruction of WWI began in 1914. Good choice! Notice that there is a group of 5 people who were traveling from Bojanow (which is all of 12 miles from Nisko, so this is very promising) and heading to Passaic. One of them, Jozef Moskal, had been in Passaic before, in 1905. So at least Andrzej was among friends. Interesting also to see that while Franciszka Puzio on the line above Andrzej was possibly his sister (but more likely his cousin) she does list a different "nearest relative" in Poland. Franciszka lists her mother Karolina Puzio, while Andrzej lists his father Wojciech Puzio. Also, for the question of whom they are going to stay with, Franciska gives the name of her cousin Ewa Szczuch, while Andrzej names his sister Wiktorya who lived on Bond Street. Notice also that one of the group, Marya on line 8, is going to her brother in law Jozef Borowicz which caught my eye as being very similar to the name Borowiec. Possibly coincidence. From the notations on the manifest, this Marya seems to be the only one of the 5 who eventually became a citizen.

Best regards,
Sophia

Sophia,
You are so good at interpreting documents! I started from the fact that Andrzej and Franciszka were siblings. Didn't think about why one gives his mother and the other his father? Great that you see everything. This also explains why I haven't seen a married couple Puzio with the first names Wojciech and Karolina.

Dave, thank you for your sharing your knowledge. I learn something new with every post you write.

Sophia, great detailed information on the manifest. I should give my manifests for my family to see what details I may have missed.
Happy Monday!
Dave, thanks for the info regarding Ruthenians. I have always viewed them as a people, rather than as a place. I found what you wrote quite interesting, that they were not all Greek Catholic and I appreciate your differentiation between the use of the word "conversion" when changing religion and the idea of switching rites. I will endeavor to use the correct word, in future. So Trish, the manifest you found for Marya Borowiec is more than likely the right one. Barb, you may find it useful when looking at Ellis Island ship manifests to look at the heading. If what it says is, "List or Manifest of Alien Passengers for the United" then you know there is a second page because the term United States has been divided between the two page headers. There were many different forms used over time as the laws of what data was required to be captured changed, and some of the forms were (as you already know) one-page manifests, so this little trick will help you know whether to look for a second page.

Best,
This is what I found so far on Andrzej Puzio.

Trish

Hi Trish,

Hi Everyone,

Hpuizo, I posted the obituaries in a previous post. They are PDF files that you can download. Wilhelm Walerko's is the 1956 obituary, Mary Borowiec Walerko's is the 1972 obituary, and Zofia Borowiec Czesniewska's is the 1977 obituary. I can send them to you via a private message.

As for Theresa, she is the daughter of Wilhelm Walerko and Mary Borowiec. Here is the 1940 census to prove it. I will send it via private message. The forum is not letting post this census record.
Rpuzio, if you live in New Jersey and can go to the New Jeresy State Archives, you will find tons of information there. The staf is wonderful, helpful, and friendly. The records are all on microfilm. If you cannot go there in person, then use the link I provided. You can request records right online or through regular mail.

I will be writing a different post on the Puzio family so that we do not get confused on the families.

Happy Saturday!
