Dave,
Thanks so much for your reply. I have researched most of the parishes, R.C. and G.C., in the area where my gr-grandmother, Julianna (Helen) Rygiel Gnyo, lived. However, you mentioned archives in your note. Several years ago, I did write the archives in Ternopil and received Information on the generation before her. This was also my paternal side but different line. They sent a transcription of the records I requested. These not only included parents' names but also grandparents', in some cases. It was not expensive. 'Twas the mail order (which I used) that was a lot more costly than the info itself. That I could try again since I have her marriage and death date and place. You sparked an idea for me!
Appreciate your reply,
Mary,

Civil transcripts in the Austrian partition began soon after the First Partition of Poland. Austria had no separate civil registry offices. Instead civil records were simply transcripts/copies of the parish registers submitted to the Austrian government. These copies were kept in Latin in the columnar format until WWI and were identical to the registers kept in the parish. Many records from the Austrian Partition have not been filmed and the copies held by the Polish National Archives are often very "hit or miss". If you cannot find the records you want listed in the holdings of the archives, then probably the best bet would be to contact the parish.

Wishing you success,

Does anyone know when civil records began in eastern Galicia? I have information on marriage, name in children's baptisms, and death date of my great-grandmother, including names of her parents; from marriage and death records, I do know approximate year of birth. However, since I do not have birth record, I do not know where she was born. Since I have not been able to find this out from parish records, I was wondering when the Austrian civil records began. She was born about 1851.

Thanks,
