The correct polish surname spellling is Potiuk, ukrainian name would be in cyrylic alphabet. I cant really tell how different would be transliteration to english from polish than from ukrainian alphabet.
The river [as well as village] in Polish looks like was written as "Gniła" also as [rather Ukrainian] Hnyła.
Today, Hnyła is in Ukraine, but before WWII was Polish territory.
People living in this area would be called "Bojkowie", thats why ancestors from village would call themselves as Ruthenians. Although most people of the village was GreekCatholics, they might feel as different ethnic group than Ukrainians, thus Ruthenians https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Boyko

This helps so much in my family search.
It seems the spelling of the surname is consistent. I will assume this is the correct spelling.
How would i go about finding more records from this area? Is it Poland or the Ukraine?

There is an announcement about a court case where Andrew Potiuk put complaint on former Hnyła habitant. An announcement is in "Gazeta Lwowska" here http://jbc.bj.uj.edu.pl/dlibra/plain-content?id=23388
As I said, the “indexed name” (the way the indexer read the handwriting) was Pedir Potuik (sorry I typed it wrong in my first posting – it was late at night). But I think it looks more like Tedir so it could be the brother who came in Nov. 1906. This Pedir/Tedir was 41 when he left Hamburg, Germany on March 18, 1910 on the S.S. Graf Waldersee. He had been in the U.S. before, to the same location (Bernice, PA), and it could say he was here in 1906 (writing is faint for the year).

If you're searching on the Ellis Island website, you can search for Pedir Potuik to see the manifest (it comes up to frame 292 which is the 2nd page of the manifest; frame 291 is the 1st page of the manifest). ~PL

I am having no luck in pulling Pedre Potiuk up on the Ellis Island web.
I was wondering if he is another brother visiting. I did receive info that Wasyl had a brother coming from Hnila traveling to Bernice Pa. Tedor Potiuk 38 yrs on 21 Nov 1906. Do you think they are the same person?
Hnila keeps coming up with this family. But it's a River? Hmmm... I thought i found his place of origin.
thank you again for your help.

Valerie~ I found someone indexed as Pedre Potiuk (married, age 41 who left a wife in Hnila) arriving at Ellis Island March 31, 1910 from Hnila, Austria (country) whose race was Ruthenian (not Polish or Slovak). He was going to his brother Wasyl Potiuk in Bernice, PA. There were 5 men from Hnila traveling together and going to Bernice, PA

Ruthenian's tended to come from what is now the very eastern part of Slovak Republic (would have been the country of Hungary then) or from the Ukraine area just to the east of the current Polish border with Ukraine (part of Galicia).

There was a Hnila Lipa(or Hnyla Lypa or in Polish Gniła Lipa) river, a short tributary of the Dniester River in the Ukraine. So don't know if there was a village on this river. But if they're from the Ukraine you have the Cyrillic alphabet to contend with. Hopefully others on PO who have familiarity with this area can help you. Good luck. ~PL

I would like any info on this town in Galicia. Also how i can get records from this area.
I have just received info that my husbands grandfather & grandmother are from Hnila Galicia.
His name is Wasyl Potiuk, this is another new spelling for this surname.
Any help on how i can continue finding more generations of this family is greatly appreciated.
