Just to add to what Ted said, current day maps do not show Orgieleszczak, so I made an image that shows the old map (1936) and the current Google map together. Since so many of the roads are in the same place now as they were when the 1936 map was drawn, you can deduce where Orgieleszczak would be, so I have added its name in yellow to the current-day map. See if it helps you.

The links you provided to the National Archives of Australia work just fine. I agree with Ted that we have in fact found the right place of birth for Genowefa. Now that I have read the NAA documents, I can see that she certainly endured a lot. I admire her ability to raise her daughter under such trying circumstances and create a way for them both to move on to a better life in Australia. Thank you so much for sharing this with us.

All the best,
G'day acadd

I believe based on the name of the village as recorded in the naturalisation paperwork the village we found is the correct location. In Google maps it no longer exists and appears to be the location of a couple of farms. Good luck with your visit and hopefully one of the farm owners may recall the family you seek.

Cheers
Yes, the Arolsen Archive has some documents concerning Genowefa. In one of them her birthplace is listed as Orgieleszczak. She was born in 1921, so there is a good chance that the place still exists. In the historical description of the church in Modzerowo (Izbica Kujawska) the place Orgielszczak is mentioned. Izbica Kujawska is located 30 km from Koło. The church in Modzerowo on FamilySearch is linked to Koło.
G'day Barb and Sophia

I think you have cracked it Barb - Orgielszczak appears in Geneteka under Modzerowo Parish but I couldn't find it in Google maps. Found it eventually in mapa.szukacz.pl and it is about 3km South East of Modzerowo - I've circled it on the attached map.
Hi Barb and Sophia,

I had a quick look at this earlier today as my maternal family hails from just north of Koło. I had a look at the documents in NAA and that is what has been posted here as the village. I also looked at the docs at Arolsen and the village is listed as Olgieleszcza, Koło. I have no idea where this may be as I could not locate anything. Not sure if this option helps any - it may actually confirm Sophia's guess of Goleszczyna.

Cheers
Hi Ted and Barb,

One more wild guess, and then I will wait to see if our original poster has an opportunity to upload more images of the handwriting.

My wild guess: are we seeing the name of a street, in Koło?

Sophia

G'day Sophia

Not such a wild guess. Two of my relatives are from the villages of Blizna and Nagórna which no longer exist, but there are streets by those names where the villages were located. I had a quick look for a street named Olgieleszcza but no luck.

Cheers
My maternal grandmother, Genowefa (aka Genovefa) Rosinska DOB 15 Feb 1921, immigrated to Australia, post WW2, as a single mother and was estranged from her family, so I never learnt about them.
Her immigration records report she is from Olgieszcza Koło, however I am unable to locate this town or village for a planned trip soon.
I was wondering if anyone could assist me in locating her village, maybe it was renamed, redeveloped, absorbed by a larger town or city.

Hi Acadd,

It's a good puzzle. What would be helpful in order to decipher the name of the town would be to see more entries written in the same handwriting. Can you upload another image with more written? I am not convinced that the first letter of the town is "O" and would like to see more words or, preferably, names of people or places so that we can see capital letters.

The form is in English, but as you pointed out, there are some entries in German, such as "kind" (child), "Polnisch" (Polish) and "Polen" (Poland). However, the word "koło" is Polish and is likely not part of the name of the town but is saying that she came from "near" the town that is cited.

Let's see if we can figure out where this place is.
