Michael,

It is true that for some reasons priests in Podhale are not always willing to cooperate, but it is also true that many of them are helpful and that our guides and researchers have successes in searching records and family there.

Hi -
My Grandfather (Andrzej Skupien) 1913 naturalization papers also listed Odrawaz as his birthplace. He was born in 1870, came to the US (Buffalo NY) in 1898. There is a link to one brother who came in 1899. But no records of any other siblings or parents.
I was looking into visiting Poland to see if I could find if there are any records, but your post is discouraging. You indicated you had some success with one researcher. Care to give contact info?

Raphael_Jones~ In general the church records from the southwest area of Galicia (Podhale region) are not online, and most were not microfilmed by the LDS Church either. Records are in the individual churches & Diocesan Archives in Krakow. In addition the priests in the churches in the area between Nowy Targ and Zakopane to the west are not very willing to share records even when you approach in person. They feel they are very busy & don't have time to help people searching for family history. That being said, the church archivist in Nowy Targ was very helpful searching for records for my immediate family when I visited in 2009. Others here have hired researchers in Poland to see if they can get access to records. I'm sure if others have other views, they will post them as well. I do wish you luck ~PL

Does anybody know how to get records for free or records online in the Podhale region, which is down south in Poland?
