Hi Charlotte,

I should have added that the herby.com.pl listing for Bój was showing 3 individuals living in the Katowice area and 16 individuals living in the Torun area. It does not necessarily mean that your grandmother was from either of these places. Looking for info on just the surname may not lead you to much about your grandmother herself. Have you looked for information on her on the Ancestry website or the Family Search website? Both are providing a number of "hits" for people with the Boj surname, including ship passenger lists, census records, etc. Of course, our access to records on these websites is often at the mercy of how indexers read surnames on handwritten documents, so try also looking for her under misspellings such as Boy, Boij, and whatever else you can imagine the name looked like when written.

Sophia, you're an angel. I heard the pronunciation on the link you sent and is it exactly how my father said it. Over many years, I asked more Polish people if they knew how to spell it and they said they never heard of such a Polish name. I'm very grateful to you and hope I can further my search.

Hi Charlotte,

My very best guess is: Bój which is a very rare name, indeed. I see it listed on http://www.herby.com.pl/indexslo.html which gives surnames and the number of people using them based on Poland's 1990 census. It is showing 19 people using that spelling. By contrast, a more common name such as Kowalski was used by about 132,000 people.

You know, you can hear the pronunciation of it using Google Translate: https://translate.google.ca/?hl=en&tab=wT#pl/en/b%C3%B3j just by clicking on the speaker icon. Sound about right to you?

I know the pronunciation of my grandmother's maiden name but not the spelling. Can you help me? It was pronounced BOO EE.
