I forward you press release received from The Polish Museum of America in Chicago about the presentation and signing of the book "Beyond The Uprising: A Polish Girl's Journey written by Cynthia Grant Bowman, a professor of law at Cornell Law School in Ithaca, New York.

The presentation and book signing will feature the author, Cynthia Grant Bowman, and the subject of the biography, Maria Chudzinski. Selected readings from the book will be highlighted in a multimedia presentation.

"Beyond The Uprising: A Polish Girl's Journey" is an engaging story of a charming and resourceful Polish girl from a privileged background whose youth, education and subsequent life were interrupted and transformed by World War II. Like so many others, she participated in a passionate but tragic battle for her country, and lost everythingher family, her home, her lifestyle, and her country. Her struggle to find herself as an émigré and to create a life for herself in a new country reflects the courage and resourcefulness of her whole generation.

Cynthia met the subject of this biography, Maria Chudzinski, while teaching at Northwestern University School of Law in Chicago, where Maria worked in the international section of the law library. Maria was born in Poland before the German invasion and the Second World War and joined the underground resistance, or Home Army, as a teenager. She fought during the 1944 Warsaw Uprising and was taken prisoner by the Germans when the city fell. In 1945 Maria moved to England, where she was a member of the Polish Air Force, ultimately settling in Chicago in 1952. She has been very active in the Polish American community in Chicago since that time. Intrigued by Marias past Professor Bowman asked her to tell her story. The book is the result.
