Thank you Dave, Sirdan and Cheri. Dave, maps were great - thank you. A LOT to digest. Can't wait to see the translation of this chapter. Feel so fortunate that it exists, when very little about my family seems to be out there!

Some more information about Dominik.

Dave did great knowledgable post about history of Poland. It clearly shows (picture - Poland 1920-1939.gif) what we lost, what we gained after WWII. According to book, most polish people started to leave Lwów in 1945. Mainly to Wrocław and Bytom. Some people stayed, like Adam, because they still kept hope that on another conference, politics would make changes to put back previous borders. Also polish underground army asked for that. Unfortunately nothing changed. Adam and other remaining people had to go to Poland anyway, if not, then they had been left on their own, which would be dangerous.

Dominik on september (1939) joined to police, just before Lwów was taken by soviets, he was at Obrona Narodowa. Later, police consisted of ukrainians and jews. Dominik was stubborn, he refused voting in march of 1940. When armed policemen came for him on 22:00 o'clock, he had to vote. All soviet voting was faked, not really have to mention. I wrote Dominik was arrested during escape in easter time 1940. Its so high possibility, that Cheri found that record. Its on first page, we have confirmation.

Forgot to mention. Józef, father of the family was working at monks Dominicans. Dont know his job. Mother was keeping house. Who knows what happened to them after the war. Dave's other finding might be a clue.

This is great story of whole family. That would be almost all about Dominik. The rest story is on books' pages. I wish you other findings, making contact with family too.

Cheers!

                                      Melinda,

Perhaps the attached maps will help to visualize the changes of national/political jurisdictions of Lwow over time. On some maps Lwow is found under the German name Lemberg.
Lwow was part of the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth (Rzeczpostpolita Obojga Narodow) for centuries. On the 1764 pre-Partition map of the Commonwealth Lwow is located in Wojewodztwo Ruskie. After the Partitions of Poland it became part of the Austrian Empire as what was known as the Kingdom of Galicia. It was in Austrian controlled Galicia that Dominik was born. After WWI Lwow became part of the Polish Republic and that was the situation when Adam was born in 1921. The General Government map reflects the situation during WWII until the understanding between Hitler and Stalin fell apart. As the Russian army advanced westward Lwow came under Russian control, which was the situation when Adam was arrested. The 1920 map has an overlay which shows how contemporary Poland lost territory in the East and regained territory in the West. Now Lwow is part of Ukraine and is known as Lviv.

Hope the maps help with visualization of the changes which Lwow underwent over time.

Wishing you continued progress and success,
Let me rephrase words about Dominik. He was under conspiration, active against occupant. He was spied by somebody. In 1940 he tried to move from soviet occupation area to german occupation area because he wanted to avoid arrest. He was catched by russians anyway on railway station in Rawa Ruska. I was easter time (march). He was accused, then judged death penalty, what turned into 10 years of prison. He was in camp in Kołyma and Jaźma. In 1941 he was freed because of amnesty, and after that he joined gen. anders army. This is what is in book. interesting, what other info is on your documents.
Łagr (Lagr) is soviet camp for prisoners. Camp is where people are forced work hard, and they lose hope.

Adam was forced to leave Lwów. Its written in book, that Adam was triple times in police station, and policeman "offered" him a movement. At third time it was threat. They took adams documents in the night, he had to go to railway station in the morning, they gave documents back, and Adam left Lwów. After the war this area was not polish territory anymore. Almost all polish people left old eastern polish teritories, they are called repatriants. Many of them settled in new, western territories.

I've been looking for this information so long. I don't know how you've found so much of it. Can I ask a couple questions about your email...You say Adam was forced to move to Poland in 1946? What do you mean? And what do you mean by "underground soldier?" I was confused why he would be arrested in 1940, when according to his own records, he was in a POW camp starting in 1939. Any thoughts?
I ve sent to you Melinda pm with link to the scans. The Adam Memories contains lots of info, this is great start point for genealogy research if that you would like to begin. Here is some most importatnt info:
Adam was born in 1921, he had siblings that you already know. The family lived in Lwów in house at the Ormiańska street 35, near armenian cathedral. Adam was going to music school and taking piano lessons. He mention his aunt-brother Jacek Druszkiewicz, which in fact was his cousin. Adam was forced to move to Poland after war, in 1946.
Dominik was born in 1913, he was goldsmith. He was arrested by NKWD in 1940 (he was probably active as "underground" soldier) and was prisoned in łagr. Later he became soldier of I panzer division of Gen. Anders. After the war he stayed in GB. In 1951 he moved to USA, died in 2001 in Jersey.
Wincenty was born in 5 of november 1909 in Lwów. He was railwayman. Died on 9 of january 1995 in Sucha Beskidzka

Sirdan, you are my hero! I am trying to locate the book here, through the library, but they are having a hard time getting it. Most libraries do not want to send it across state borders, as there are so few. However can I thank you!?

Sirdan, how would I find an obituary for Adam? If we know what parish he was a part of, wouldn't it make sense they would have an obituary? Have not had an response from any of the emails I sent.

Thank you - so much.

Sirdan, I'm trying to confirm that is a photo of Adam. Any help there? I cannot read the website about the festival where I found the photo (the link you sent me) and it's not translating well.

Thanks!
I appreciate your response, Dave. You are correct...I am doing my best to track Adam first! Would love to know more about Jozef, but hopefully that comes straight from the mouth of a relative! Thanks again - I'm so thankful for everyone's help.
Melinda,

It looks like the Easter Bunny brought you a basket full of information. I was not able to answer you question about trying to link Jozef Jaz due to holiday stuff. Of course, you would want to link him through birth/baptism and marriage documents. The home page of the Polish Archives has a database called "Pradziad". It does not contain info about specific individuals but lists the archives which hold records for the various places in Poland. There are records from Lwow which are held in an archive in Warsaw and so that could be the place you need to contact for vital records. But that could be for a time in the future. The most valuable lead now is the info you have about Adam. Contacting him or his descendants would seem to be the easiest way to determine whether your Jozef Jaz is the same Jozef as the one born in 1876 and repatriated via Krakow.

I know that right now Jozef is on the back burner, but I didn't want to ignore your question.

Best of luck,

Thank you to you both - Sirdan and Cherly. You've been so helpful. And just the help I needed!

Sirdan, I've downloaded the school report but can't translate it because it's an image. What does it say about Dominik or Vincent? Do you know for sure he was 12-14? I have been trying to figure out date of birth (even just a year) for Dominik's siblings. So that would put Vincent's birthdate around 1902-1904? If so, he was the older brother. Can you shed some light there?

The other is an old address for Vincent? I cannot see it at all. Is there an actual address I could try sending something to?

I mailed a letter to Adam today. Still not sure if he's alive or not. Been searching, but can't find anything. Hoping the church or parish group knows.

Found this image of Adam at the Festival!

Thank you!
