This is a very significant remark. If you don't like walking upstairs remember that 1st floor in Poland means 2nd floor in the US. In Poland we have ground-floor and one level higher is the 1st floor.

We stayed in Krakow for 8 days during July 2009. We chose to stay in an apartment rather than a hotel. There are lots of short-stay apartment rental companies online. We rented a studio apartment from AAA apartments: http://www.krakow-apartments.biz/
Our total price was 2024 PLN - with the exchange rate at that time, it cost us about 82 US dollars per day. We felt it was a better value than a hotel room. Their website was easy to use and had photos and good descriptions of their apartments which are located all over the city. Also, the representatives spoke perfect English and we used our credit card to make the deposit and pay the balance when we arrived.

Our studio was called the Old Town Studio and had a queen bed, sofa, table with 2 chairs, a modern kitchenette with microwave and refridgerator, a modern bathroom with shower and clothes washing machine (but no clothes dryer).

We were only 2 blocks from the historic square and a taxi stand was less than 500 feet away. On the downside, there was no air conditioning in our studio so we had some uncomfortable nights in July. The apartment faced the street, so with the windows open, it was a bit noisy - but we still had a great time.

Important to remember: First floor apartments are actually on the 2nd floor, not the ground floor. Keep this in mind or you will find yourself climbing an extra flight of stairs to your apartment!
